I'm not a big Makinami fan, but there's no denying, hame is made of win. I wish my middle name was Illustrious. Plus, her pink plugsuit and green test plugsuit both kick some serious butt. Her voice actress also speaks some pretty decent English, unlike Kaji's voice actor's butchery.
I always have been and always will be a Rei fan, but sadly, there hasn't been a single good Rei reincarnation since the original series. Even these movies botch her best original aspects. Before, she was a fantastic allegory for the awkward interactions between people and a perfect representation of Shinji's Ego as it shifts towards the control of Shinji's Ego while he drifts towards Asuka (his ID). Now, she's just a quiet girl who has never been loved. Movie Rei could be any plain 14 year old girl in real life. It makes for a boring shallow character (which is all of the movie reboot problems; everything being so shallow beneath the pretty new paint job). The movie Rei has been so botched, she'll neve rbe the Yandere death goddess Angel she turns into in the original Movie conclusions... Sad.
I do agree with you on Rei and how the character interpretations have been pancaked somewhat since NGE S1. But if you think of the movies as an alternate take or sequel to the End of Evangelion movies, it makes it a little more understandable.
When I watch a movie, whether it's a remake of something (like Star Trek) or an original work (which there's less of year by year, I try not to let my expectations get in the way of my catching the different nuances in a film. I sit back and take it all in first.
A new shiny coat of paint or not, that car still runs good doesn't it? By the numbers of people who bought the DVD/Blu-Ray when it came out, it would seem so. ^_^

it's weird the most shocking scene for me in 2.22 was mari talking in english for a scene. must have watched it 3 times.

Actually i rly dun like her cos the looks like Gainax is showing her too much just to promote Eva 2.22. But then i watch it and shes pretty cool from there, probably cos its a huge breath of fresh air to see her not being emo compare to the others

Most of the people that watched Macross F loved her due to her maturity and strong will that was revealed throughout the series. And thus why she's still in the list, one of the few that managed to stay there week after week
Just to add to your comment. Sheryl's character also targets a specific audience, while Ranka seemed to not have a defined audience. They tried to give her a loli look with that fang in one episode, and on another they tried to portray her as a direct rival to Sheryl's mature sex appeal.
The lack of a niche for Ranka played a role in which one people preferred.
