Gears of War 3 More Macho Than Ever

Fans awaiting Gears of Wars 3 have been treated to new screenshots showing off the spectacular graphics and ursine character designs the series is known for.

Although the “screenshots” may owe more to optimistic use of Photoshop than actual gameplay, that the game should have top notch graphics is hardly in doubt.

Even the women are macho:

It is not hard to see where some less sophisticated Japanese developers get the idea that the uglier and buffer the character designs the greater the probability of success in the US market.

She isn't. Anya is by all means a girl. And a cute one at that. Only she got transferred from mission support to fighting in the front line because the Gears are running short on manpower. You may blame the Locust, the Lightmass Bombing and the sinking of Jacinto for that.

"(...) ursine character designs the series is known for."

Ironically enough, I was discussing with some peers over at a video game forum about how they now look noticeably less ultra-mega buff than in the previous two installments, especially the arms and their now not-so-comically-minuscule craniums.

"(...) the uglier and buffer the character designs the greater the probability of success in the US market."

It's not so much that they have to be ugly but that they have to be badass. I mean, it's a barren, gritty battlefield with bloodthirsty aliens and monsters; Japanese moe crap and gay Final Fantasy designs would be too much of a turnoff for these manly games for manly gamers.

And no, I'm not being ironic, sarcastic and/or otherwise facetious at all there. Supermodels have nothing to do in these games unless, as the game's developer, you play the comical fetish card (see Bayonetta, OneeChanbara, P.N.03, Ninja Gaiden Σ and Σ2, among others) or just portray a beautiful, yet properly dressed and generally stark, grown-up woman (Bullet Witch).

The less sophisticated Japanese developers was not wrong after all.

I don't think Americans will prefer girls what have a face like Yoko of Gurren Lagann or Samus of Metroid at "manly" game. So, go the over-masculinised girls!

Gamers can be too superficial, does it really matter what mass size the character your playing is if the game is really good?

I understand the ugly face part though.

I don't see what makes the girl "macho" in those screenshots, unless firearms are a staple of machohood.

Also, the designs sometimes provide a break from the androgyny governing male characters in Japanese games. They sure are pretty to look at but, must they also behave like big kids?. Oh Tidus, you were annoying as all hells sometimes

To be honest I didn't even know they were making GoW3. I should get around to playing GoW2 someday... yeah, someday...

It's like they attempted to add a pretty boy, but he still has a rough and rugged facial structure.

It's like some Japanese-American bastard child in design. It's really hideous.

American games tend to focus on "macho" characters and underdog fights because it's rooted in their history. You might as well gripe about the otaku culture of Japan.

Nice to see that the female armor mirrors the male armor, for once. I wonder if those giant rustbuckets each character wears is custom made, given the size difference between individual characters.

The graphics don't look all that incredible if you compare it to today's games. Looks pretty much the same as GoW 2.

I wouldn't agree. The Unreal III engine, used both in UT3, GoW and now GoW 2 is the most advanced graphic engine with integrated hardware and software physics. There may be games that look better, but no other engine can compare with U3 on the terms of resource usage to graphich/physics quality ratio.

The new Call of Duty demonstrates just that- it does look nice, but after you've been looking at it for some time, you see that the developers have made certain "compromises", with animation quality in particular; and with all that, it still eats up computer resources as a fat kid eats his snacks.

Why does it continue to be such a problem around here that western game companies tend to gravitate towards more "manly" themes? At least there was somewhat of a complaint relative to Nier, as it seemed to be a corruption of the original intent of the creators (I assume), however in this case there just doesn't seem to be any cause for concern. Why isn't there such a loud ruckus over Japanese designers to utilize effeminate males?

Why does it matter, so long as the game's gameplay and overall storyline is endearing?

Yeah, what we need are more JRPG girly men fresh out of make-up studios to go fight the Locusts. Maybe the girly men can go speak French to the Locusts and wave some white flags while they are at it.

But this is Gears, where wearing improper armor means you are gong to die biting high caliber bullets. She has to wear bulky armor, since, well, you know, being hot is good and all but it's better to be alive.
