Even die-hard Strike Witches fans seem to be anticipating news on the “freeware level” $80 Strike Witches game more for the opportunity to rage at otaku exploitation than the chance to play a pantsu-laden shooting game, and the latest gameplay video does not disappoint in this regard:

A less than inspiring use of an HD console, although the cunningly exorbitant price probably guarantees profitability thanks to the core of fans who would buy anything containing a saucy Sanya x Eila scene

I still don't see the issue. It makes me wonder if the people bitching and complaining have played any of the other shmups on the system. Sure, it could use better shot sounds, and slightly more flash in the graphics, but when compared to the rest of the shmup fair on the 360, only titles like Death Smiles 2 really stand out. Otomedius G and plenty of other titles are roughly on the same level as this Strike Witches game.

Cool will I need to put a token in the Xbox to play?
Assuming that their is a Lunatic mode, I will run out of tokens before owning this half-assed game.

    watching that video clip...

I'm not really seeing this supposed "lack of quality". but maybe I just have realistic expectations for the genre, and understand that liscensed games don't tend to be aimed to be the next huge "killer app" for a given system.
$80 may be an exorbitant game price, but let's not confuse "the company wants too much money" for "this is a poor game".

it's a liscensed SHMUP. it's not going to be leaping up and down, waving it's arms, and humping your leg screaming HI-DEF! HI-DEF!. honestly, I'm getting somewhat tired of games being judged based on their looks alone.

Games are a graphic art. A good story will not save a game that looks 'cheesy'. The clip of the combat sequence looked like a rather poor Gameboy variant.

Considering the high quality of 3D games in general, this looks like a return to the 90s.

As a fan of Strike Witches, I am terribly disappointed.

Something like this for 80 buck might've worked better back in the 90's, but now, it's just shit.

    I was thinking "What Next?"

Perhaps design a "Gunslinger Girl" game, but essentially just use the program for one of the classic (and Formulaic but good) SNES games, like "Iria", "Lupin", "3X3 Eyes"...

    Then charge $80...

Wow, that's horrible. Gradius, R-Type, Einhander, etc, etc... So many game series have done side scrolling shooters better. This doesn't even look like fun from a gameplay stand point. It looks like a frustrating annoyance. Graphically... It's not good. I don't like Strike Witches in any medium, but this is the worst. They could have easily gone for a more realistic approach like varying ammo clip sizes and reloads to slow down that mindless spray that side scrolling shooters are plagued by. They also could have made a 3D shooter game wherein the flying girls gun down targets. That might have been fun just because flying in 3D is fun when well executed. This is just so so sad.

I agree. They should also have made it a game where you have a vast, realistic, free roaming world where you can steal cars.

And oh, make it first person. And replace Yoshika with Nier.

I'm trying to be optimistic; I'll take the uberly cute Eila cutscene portraits and Nakai Erika's voicework as the major draws of the game while the shooting part is just an extra minigame.

That boss battle would have been a lot cooler if it was bigger, doubled as a carrier, and had individual gun turrets shooting at you along its surface and belly.

    It's fought in stages.

First, and endurance type phase where it releases tons of enemies and you have to destroy the hanger.

Second, You get up close and personal, zooming across the wings destroying the turrets and that leads into the third phase where you attack critical points on the wing to make it crash.

Of course a gameplay overhaul would have to be made, Ace Combat style, to make this possible. But really I should watch a few episodes of Strike Witches so I know there things are coming from.

    And now imagine:

    -HD-Graphics
    -Level of Detail from Crysis
-Gameplay of Zone of the Enders
-120 Hours campaign (Online and offline coop support with splitscreen up to 4 players in any online/offline combination)
    -Versus mode
    -Softcore yuri scenes
-Mini games like catch the panty-thief
    -alternate costumes
    -Dating game components

Now that's an $80 game....actually i'd pay like 200 for a special edition with pantsu, the 100 songs OST and a figurine.

... when the big one explodes at 3:55, the game slows down as if it has trouble rendering it all.

Ikaruga on the Dreamcast did that as well. That was definitely intentional, even whiting out the screen with the particles and everything. Had an awesome, goosebump inducing effect on me the first time I saw it. Even if it wasn't intentional, I guarantee you it was a happy accident and they kept it. They may have used a similar concept here, but not for the right reason it seems.

It would only slow down if it was rendered in 3D. If it's a 2.5D Sprite game, there wouldn't be much lag, as the consoles are faster processing 2D stuff than 3D (unless the game off-loads 3D work to the GPU, which increases the speed of the game)

it might be rendered in 3d but made to look like 2d by making the camera and movement fixed in one plane.

True. I did notice that the characters do look like they zoom out (ie. get further away from the camera) when rotating around the enemy, that would mean it's 3D or pseudo-3D...

Also, is it just me or is there no health in the game? I saw the witches get hit with some Neuroi attacks, but I didn't see any witches fall down from the sky off the screen (as they would be dead/KO'ed). Unless the health setup is going to be coded in later...

    Interesting concept, bad execution.

The game itself may be of poor quality, but I'm sure that their will be many fans that will buy the game just for the laughs at the poor quality or just to kill some time.

Despite only looking at the first few seconds of the YouTube video, if the developers learn from their mistakes, the game series could really excel. Also, full 3D or just 2.5D with sprites?

Also, the dialogue setup is horrible IMO - I'd perfer characters in 3D interacting (like if someone's pissed off, they push the other character as you'd do in real life), not something like a visual novel dialogue setup.

I'll keep my eye on this.

Phhhhfff. How *exactly* is this an interesting concept? A billion other shmups are exactly the same. Doesn't really feature any interesting mechanics at all. You want to talk about shmups with interesting concepts? Radiant Silvergun, Ikaruga, Apogee's Raptor, hell basically anything but this.

I think there were more minutes of dialogue than action - it almost is a vn.
As we already knew, the effects look really cheap. The hitboxes are teensy and they tried to compensate by adding more projectiles and making them more powerful. It doesn't look like that really worked or resulted in a fun game.
