It's like Legend of The Galactic Heroes, an amazing 80s anime that pretty much served the basis of Code Geass but on a far superior level.
The old TV eps almost looked like an American cartoon, but the redrawn DVD release made everything look 1000x better, and made it look even modern.

That BluRay screenshot somehow got it's aspect ratio messed up. Stretch the image horizontally a bit and it looks a lot better again. I still like her facial expression in the movie version better.

They didn't change the face morons, they are two distinct frames of the motion of Mari turning her head around. If you haven't noticed before in all these comparison threads it's fucking difficult to capture exactly the same frame of animation from two different sources.
