Final Fantasy XIV Battles “Pathetically Boring”

Eager MMORPG maniacs awaiting Final Fantasy XIV are aghast at early gameplay footage showing battles as exciting as Final Fantasy XIII is non-linear.

Update:

Square Enix were so embarrassed by the videos that they forced YouTube to take them down (the videos had been available for several weeks prior to becoming famous, and strangely they left other less controversial gameplay videos alone); by way of replacement, here are two alternative versions, which should be just as exciting:

    You fail. This game is in ALPHA, NOT BETA, and it is far too early to be passing judgment on the sole basis of some leaked videos. Slow combat is a LATENCY issue that is being looked into and fixed. (That is there is an UNINTENDED delay between the time that you press the attack button and when the player character actually attacks.)

    the ‘numbers’ for the damage deal or taken are all relative in all RPG. its all about the length of time spent versus gain balance.

    just look at WOW, they have fast combat pace and big numbers for character stats, therefore the boss gonna have even bigger numbers for their HP and one-hit-KO moves that gives no chances to recover.
    for FF11, the combat pace is slower and small numbers for character stats, the boss have smaller numbers for HP and damaging moves as compared to WOW.

    generally, the ratio of gain for killing 1 mob in FF11 is equal to killing 10 mobs in WOW

    I was all ready to jump in and defend Square before i saw the videos. I tried to keep my neutral head about it, but I can’t: GODDD THIS IS BOOORRRING!

    I almost always love Square’s battle systems (yes, even FFXIII’s, before you ask) but this just is sad. The sound effects are the same as their iPod clickwheel game, Song Summoner, which feel way too out of place. The menu system is just to tedious for an MMO with lots of other people. And the music? Come on, Square, you know people come to you for exciting battle themes. What are you doing? What. Are. You. Doing.

    WHY CAN’T THEY JUST FIND A WAY TO IMPLEMENT THE ATB IN AN MMO? IT’S THE PERFECT BATTLE SYSTEM!

      I cannot believe you classify people who enjoy a certain game as “scum of the earth” if you cannot see some of the points being made then you probably shouldn’t post your poor opinion.

      There have been no improvements to the battle system WHAT SO EVER since xi. The only thing they’ve done is altered the races a bit, and polished a couple of visuals. As far as I can see from some of the pictures that have surfaced we may have just found a Highlands II!

      What they’ve said, although some of it has been a bit harsh, is true. Turn based hasn’t been great since the 90’s. SE needs to get with the program and go to real time battle system.

    SE should make Tri-Ace do the battle system for this game too. I know Star Ocean 4 sucked, but the battle system’s pretty decent and fast-paced. Plus, Tri-Ace’s works have been successful so far(like End of Eternity and Eternal Sonata)

Plus, I hate MMOs and just want to play and finish every FF story. For those that love MMOs, there should be a new series titled FF:”something” or whatever. That would chill a lot of us at least.

    Yeah, remember when this game is coming out? THIS YEAR. As in, within the next six months. Stating that’s it’s not even in BETA yet at this late date isn’t exactly the greatest defense. If anything, you’re making it look even worse.

    I can only see two likely ways things will go now. Either the game will be pushed back quite a bit, or they’ll release a very unfinished game. Hopefully they’ll have the sense and integrity to do the former. But knowing SquareEnix, I’m expecting the latter.

    Not that it will necessarily be a total loss even if they DO release it this year. MMO’s are often released early as bug-infested, unfinished games. Sometimes though, the developers actually will use their updates and expansions to finish their MMO.

    Though in my experience, it’s much more common for them to just quickly throw together an update, as if to say “No, no, we care! The game’ll be good someday, honest!”. They then piss off and forget about their MMO until it’s time to quickly throw together the next update.

    FFXI was a fine example of this.

    this is not a finished product yet.

    From what I have got to do on the game so far. the game is leaps and bounds better then FFXI. which I still play to this day. just wait till it’s released.

    Well, with the vids down, I cannot really do a ‘good’ quote on this game. But the fact is that the RPG genre (online or offline/single-player) has been SLOWLY DYING!

    Either there is too damned much ‘GRIND, GRIND, GRIND!’ for MMO’s, or there is too much of that for single-players.

    They really need to come up with a way that the game is CHALLENGING yet there are no more ‘experience levels’ as they stand today.

    Heck, I went back to play FF1 recently…. guess what I did to stop the grind? Yep, CHEAT CODED it! I just couldn’t stand the thought of sitting there for HOURS grinding away at gaining experience.

      I have to agree with people who are saying that these battles are boring…. maybe it’s time to go in a “STAR OCEAN” kind of direction, Square-Enix!

      Meaning, active participation battles with little ‘menuing’.

      Come to think of it, Star Ocean was one of the games that I absolutely LOVED playing because I was actually participating in the battles.

      Grinding is definitely the thing I hate most in games. I’m okay with some randomness and having to spend some time to achieve something, but grinding for a drop that has less than 1% chance of dropping (EarthBound, I’m looking at you! Damn you, Sword of Kings!), that sort of thing is just annoying. Anything that is overly repetitive quickly becomes a hassle. Farming in general is a shitty mechanic (no offense to Harvest Moon).

        Squaresoft stopped making games where grinding was required with FF III, at least. Too bad that movie put them out of business…

    you guys are over reacting to alpha footage. lol I know everything there is to know about this game because I’m on the alpha. there is like 1800 testers on the NA alpha test and they have us all crammed in to what amounts to 10% of the total game area of the game. right now we just finish the 6th test. we are stress testing the servers. this game is far from ready. it took 3 test before the game was even playable. and it took that many just to weed the people out that can’t even run this game at all. there are a mass out dumb asses trying to play this game on laptops that don’t even get close to the minimum requirements to run this game.

    Japanese RPG is old.. so. fucking… Old. With prettier pictures. I tried out FF13 and could not pass the first “boss” without yawning. attack – attack – redundant – redundant – redundant – oops* better heal… attack- whoops, the “boss” got tired of being pinched and died of boredom~ its body fall down the dark below.. I swear I heard it giggle with glee in its plunge. I quit with the character emoting without end.

    14 will be a prettier version of 11.

    This does remind me a bit of ffxi, but considering that all MMOs are slow paced at lower levels (combined with the lag I’ve seen mentioned in the videos’ comments), I’m not sure this is a fair representation. After all, I recall footage from the last expo this was shown at that moved considerably faster. Also, this is still in beta and SE has been more open to player input than they were in the past, so there’s a good chance it’ll be faster paced in the actual game.

    • And since my previous comment didn’t get posted, who are you referring to as eager MMO maniacs? The halo 3 kids commented on the youtube video? The game is a laggy mess right now, look at his latency in the bottom left. It’s constantly turning yellow. There is supposed to be a 3-5 second delay between attacks on archer, one of the slower classes. Because of the lag, there’s usually about 8-10 seconds. This is why NDAs are made, so broken gameplay doesn’t get leaked and biased newsposters jump to conclusions.

    It’s either this or diablo-style button mash mmorpgs at this point. It’s the limitations of our time, and you can’t expect developers to suddenly both make amazingly complex systems requiring 1mb+ connections while still catering to those with what we would call “low-end” computers.

    I’d like to see anyone on this board to come up with an idea for an mmorpg that doesn’t revolve around one of those styles. For an mmorpg, I’m perfectly content with this style, even if it is somewhat slowed, but hopefully be more strategic based.

    The battle system is on the contrary very intuitive, and the videos the almighty unbiased Artefact picked out do not demonstrate it well at all. In fact, I think he purposely picked out the videos where the characters are not really fighting but testing out the dynamics -just to make the article juicy and controversial. WHICH YOU DO A LOT ARTEFACT.

    The load time between attacks is shown on the action gauge. The action gauge is the bar the empties and refills on the upper right hand side, right below the action icon you chose. If you want to attack, it takes as long as it does for the bar to refill. There is also a secondary gauge that is used for the off hand.

    I’m looking at continuous lance attacks right now on an alpha video and it takes 4 seconds for the bar to refill.

    This is also not taking into account stacking and the battle regimen system which will add an entirely new level of gameplay.

    The battle system is not slow, the attack delays are just as long as they were in FFXI if not faster. And the action based system makes battle flow much more hands on and involved.

In any MMO you gotta start with the basics–which is boring, and after you learn you gain more abilities, level up, blah blah blah gear… blah and then do fun shit. Even with non mmo games you still have to go through a tutorial level, ya know? Levels 1~10ish in MMOs are like tutorial levels.

    People complaining about this being slow never played ff11…..

    Scythe (slowest weapon) had 8 seconds between swings un-hasted. Great axes and the slower bows were a little over 7 seconds This is obviously low level footage as well. The only big differences is now they gave us a bar which tells you when the cooldown between swings is up (and also it appears you do not auto attack, but instead input attacks manually)

    Combat looks fine to me considering its looks the same as FFXI when your low level. FFXI has slow combat too for the most part until higher levels. All I saw was bow and 2handed-axe in those videos. In FFXI those are some slow ass weapons too. Need to see some videos of 1hand weapons and spell casting to decide if its really gonna be slow.

    The 3rd clip is the intro battle, the person is level one and learning how to attack for the first time. In the 2nd video the person is still only level 2 and in the first one there not much higher. Not to mention that the game is in ALPHA testing still and attack speed and such is still being adjusted and the servers only go up for about 4 hours at a time so no one has much practice playing.

    This whole post is just Hurr Durr Trollbait and I bit because I’m actually looking forward to this game.

  • You can’t expect an intense action from battling a bat and jellyfish… If you played FFXI and fought these these mobs, it’s the same thing. These are usually the mobs you fight on your beginner stage. Besides, It’s still in the beta stage and can’t judge until it’s finished.

        It’s not out yet, but its American name is Vindictus. Korean name is Mabinogi Heroes. It is an MMORPG, but you’re right. What I said is a bit untrue. I said MMO’s but I can only really think of Vindictus as one with physics and combos and stuff. Cabal has it to an extent, but not air combos or anything.

      Anyway, most people who give up on an entire country’s worth of games aren’t really thinking straight anyway.

      Just because Final Fantasy is terrible these days doesn’t mean there aren’t other great RPG series out there, like SMT or Wild ARMS. Those games were always better than FF; it’s just people have only noticed how terrible Square’s games are now.

      Square basically lost its balls the moment it stopped trying other RPG series and focused entirely on FF. Back in early 2000 and a bit before, they were adventurous and would try any genre of game. Games like Vagrant Story and Front Mission 5 are great, and it’s a shame Square couldn’t have focused on those more than Final Fantasy.

    The Japanese don’t know how to make games anymore.

    Anything Japanese game that came out was either a button masher or some RPG.

    And square has not made a good Final Fantasy since FF10. And you know it is true.

    FF11 was basically “A new hope” in star wars but 20 times more boring.

    FF13 was basically Empire strikes back in a nutshell. With the most boring gameplay I have seen in years. Half the time I did not have to do anything but watch.

    So agree/disagree square makes nothing but shit now. I will even go out and say that they DON’T make games anymore.They make horrible movies where you press the X button a few times.

    The second video shows the game to play quite nicely, the atb gauge is a bit slow but it’s understandable when the player is only about level 3. Plus he’s an archer class, I doubt that it’s a very fast attacking class. We’re not Legolas here.

    It’s the Alpha so it’s buggy as all hell, sometimes attacks don’t go off properly and abilities don’t get used when you try to use them. The Alpha and/or early Beta in any mmorpg isn’t fun. For the battle system there’s going to be party versus enemy party and multitudes of other things that are going to require a party of skilled players to conquer. I know for damn sure that it’s going to be a hella lot funner and better than spamming the 1-2-3-4-5-6-7 keys over and over.

    You level up, you get spells/abilities, the enemies get tougher, therefor the battles get more interesting.

    And it looks to me like these guys have never played an FF game before in the first place.

    I thought Square-Enix would incorporate some modern aspects of MMoRPG into FF14, but it seems they are still stuck in the game they made in 2002.

    I see the same FF11 machoists are still defending the game. “Wait til you get higher level, it’ll be more exciting!” Haha, what a joke. If the game is not fun now, why should I follow you no-lifers into wasting months of my life doing the repetitive pulling of the same crab in hopes the game might be fun later?

    The battles in FFXIV will require alot of skilled players that know what they’re doing and it’ll be geared more towards party play. Party versus enemy party is something you can think about that will be in the finished game. Your distance, what position you attack from and all of that will be factors in battle. To me having to think about your next move and take different things into consideration is much more fun than spamming the 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9 keys. This battle system is alot of fun, a little unique and it will surely make you actually want to use it as much as possible because of the enjoyment that it will provide.

      not really. When it comes to NMs or pting for exp, you will find yourself doing same thing over and over again except for NMs u need better timing then u are at pts. So it is still a process of spamming 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9.

  • Well i know already thaat this game is going to consume money like hell so not really interested on this anymore.
    (remembered the hellish day cutting my food and living expenses only to play ff11)

      No one is saying it isnt going to be boring. Its the early levels of an mmo, there isn’t much to do that isnt a bore there.

      they may not be whipping out the greatest stuff either, but Mistwalker has shown S-E hasn’t exactly lost much in Sakaguchi other than more money down the drain.

      and frankly we see how much MS is backing him now.
      he went from the star of MS Japan to not even being mentioned in MS’s JRPG extravaganza 2 years ago.
      and now Blue Dragon 2 is getting about as much attention as Silicon Knights and their Too Human trilogy (which as bad as it was, TH was still better than everything Sakaguchi’s made with Mistwalker other than Lost Odyssey).

      though now it seems he’s conned Nintendo to back him again.
      so now he can pour some of Nintendo’s Wii profits down the drain too.

    Final Fantasy XIV is in the Alpha stage right now so it’s impossible to judge it. There’s things that will be in the finished game that will really make the battle system fun and exciting. The author is stupid, retarded and a gigantic faggot but that’s mostly everyone here at Sankaku, lulz..

    Of course fighting the weak monsters is going to be god awfully boring but that shouldnt form a basis of how the entire game is going to be.

    Looks roughly the same as any low level running around in the noob areas of FFXI.

    The last video is the first battle you ever do in the game that teaches you how to get the hang of fighting. Are you honestly surprised that that battle is uneventful? For my first battle in FFXI all I did was was my character auto-attack until the monster died. Also, as it’s just alpha testing I doubt the testers are very high level yet. In FFXI it was the exact same thing until you got to level 11 or so and could party.

    Well, this is nothing mre than the early game when you usualy fight harmless fauna in a standard prairie.

    Guess it will become more exciting later in the game. That said, they should really speed up the battles more and ad a faster way to attack and cast spells.

    I’m so glad that Nobuo Uematsu is back to compose the music for this. That was very much his style and just has that bit of nostalgia and retroness about it.

    Sure, Rock and Synthesizers doesn’t exactly match the whole Medieval Fantasy world, but who cares!

    And anyways, most combat in MMORPGs tend to be slow. I bet these videos are just a selective bunch to intice negativity about it, just like those FFXIII videos of your two other party members being stuck and giltched on their trail.

      Haven’t played many MMOs have ya buddy? Most of them are pretty intense at max level. I play WoW at max level and my fingers never stop hitting hotkeys; like when I PvP on my Druid, I’m so busy using skills that I basically never actually get an auto attack in.

        FFXI is exactly as he stated. You autoattack for a few minutes and then use a weaponskill.

        And if you’re “so busy you never get an autoattack in” I question your knowledge of the game you’re playing, since using abilities in WoW does not interrupt the swing timer >_>

          you probably havent played a druid then, they reset the autoatack because it gets replaced with your skills(cat/bearform) so basicly you never autoatack unless you run out of energy as for resto and balance well theres no need to autoatack in those forms, only hunters autoatack because their skills are mostly instant but when you are casting/chaneling autoatacks are skipped and if you see autoatacks constantly you must be doing something really wrong.

      Anyways, the classes are interesting, the battles are like any other mmorpg, forgettable, but the fuck did you expect?

      • This is definitely not FFXI or even close to it. I really wanted to be able to jump on board a new story with up-to-date graphics, but the new UI and gameplay is probably the worst MMO experience I’ve had. Nothing works like it should, which is amazing, considering they’ve had FFXI as a blueprint, and the controls/movement/gameplay only feel halfway complete. The game is a mere few weeks from release as of this writing. Movement is very jerky (outside of auto run). Character creation is stupid. The overall character faces in XI actually have more diversity than in XIV… who cares about 32 hair colors and 9 hair styles when the faces all look the same and many options do not even produce an acceptable looking complexion. Half of the settings don’t even change anything to an appreciable or worthwhile degree.

        Guild leves are not a new concept… several MMOs have used this type of quest format for years and executed it better. Anyone familiar with Silkroad Online? My first few hours in that game were actually FUN and INTERESTING because combat had a tangible feel, like in XI. Not so in XIV! The combat is not enjoyable at all… They couldn’t even get the most important aspect right…

        Unless beta receives a radical overhaul, I will sadly be forced to stay within the, at least comforting, realm of Vana’diel.

        XI maintenance just ended… wheee I’m free of the madness and can go back to the real deal…

        Do you know why NDAs exist? It’s to stop shit like this from happening. Broken videos of laggy gameplay gets released and you people think it’s the real final product. Unebelievable. I’ve played the alpha and I can assure you, it’s lag. Do you see the thing on the bottom left that shows his connection? He constantly has a high ping and it’s going into the yellow over and over again. This is because of lag. When the bar fills up is when you’re supposed to attack, which takes about 3-4 seconds with even the highest delayed weapons (bows and axes)

        Please stop acting like this is some huge deal that everyone is worried about. Anyone who’s stupid enough to believe this is legit gameplay should really just not play the game in the first place.

      • They should really learn something from White Knight Chronicles. The action speed is gauged to your combat moves, and the button layout allows for quick swapping of moves and micro for an mmo. what were they thinking making this crap?
