Personally, I think I'm sick of harem and high school related plots. It seems that most shows these days will make up a convoluted plot involving magic and place a group of high schoolers in the center of it. After that, you can sprinkle in some elements to tailor the show to fit whatever audience you want. You can then add several stock characters such as, "The Moe-blob," or "The Tsundere" to encourage familiarity. It also helps to heap on the fan service.
I don't want to see this anime style abolished, it has it's place. I just wish that anime producers would make shows with better plots and characters.
