I guess the more perceptibly refined/sophisticated a pastime is the better. I guess what English conversation is to the Japanese is what French (and, maybe, German, Italian, and Latin) is to people living in Anglosphere...so I can't ridicule the Japanese really for it. The rest (more or less) is somewhat standard to the rest of the world too, in various forms. I wouldn't refer to them as cute or cool though...refined and cosmopolitan would be more appropiate.

Wow at all the deluded comments thinking they're cool/sophisticated by speaking English. This list or more precisely this point only applies to Japanese locals/natives obviously. A more accurate portraiture would be to replace English with French or Japanese as examples.

horse riding for men seems just gay and not cool at all. Also,why English conversation?It sounds gay to speak English if you're Japanese to begin with + English is already practiced all over the world,they should start practicing conversations in German instead (because German is the best language since it doesn't have those gay phonetics as English has and can be spoken quite easily with much less accents and gruesome stress on the wrong syllables <_< Basically,all you need is to learn German and Cantonese to be able to speak all major languages of the world with the least accents,so you should practice those instead of English and foreigners going to Japan should practice Japanese conversation instead(because the other way around,most foreigners can't pronounce Japanese words right,may it be the stress (like in Germany) or generally wrong spelling
(like in America, they can't read anything without phonetic transcription because their vowel-pronounciations are messed up)...

I can speak 5(ish) languages so I don't really care about the english one, I usually only speak in German or Russian, sometimes Japanese but I'm currently learning Korean so English can go Fuck itself!!!

Me too, but I guess they were making a list of hobbies more associated with the "sophisticated" look. Lets see, 1. I speak english, japanese and a little german. 2. Never have, probably never will. 3. One of my favorite hobbies. 4. No. 5. Nope. 6. I don't play violin, but I play cello. Does that count? 7. I do it, but I'm nothing special. 8. Love baking, but I burn everything. 9. My house wouldn't have furniture in most of the rooms if she didn't force me to. 10. I probably wouldn't have the patience for such things. I was disappointed by the lack of guitar, though maybe that's because I play. I guess I'm sophisticated, but I feel most of these are just stereotypical rich people hobbies. (I'm not.)
