Music industry representatives are said to have spoken of their approval for child pornography, saying it is a great way to press for Internet censorship which they can then use to attack file sharing.
Quotes from a self-proclaimed “pirate” attendee of an anti-piracy seminar as he describes the other attendees’ jubilation at the fact that moral hysteria can be exploited both to sell records and to build censorship infrastructure:
“Child pornography is great,” the speaker at the podium declared enthusiastically.”It is great because politicians understand child pornography. By playing that card, we can get them to act, and start blocking sites. And once they have done that, we can get them to start blocking file sharing sites”.
The venue was a seminar organized by the American Chamber of Commerce in Stockholm on May 27, 2007, under the title “Sweden — A Safe Haven for Pirates?”. The speaker was Johan Schlüter from the Danish Anti-Piracy Group, a lobby organization for the music and film industry associations, like IFPI and others.

“One day we will have a giant filter that we develop in close cooperation with IFPI and MPA. We continuously monitor the child porn on the net, to show the politicians that filtering works. Child porn is an issue they understand,” Johan Schlüter said with a grin, his whole being radiating pride and enthusiasm from the podium.
And seen from the perspective of IFPI and the rest of the copyright lobby, he of course had every reason to feel both proud and enthusiastic, after the success he had had with this strategy in Denmark.
Today, the file sharing site The Pirate Bay is blocked by all major Internet service providers in Denmark. The strategy explained by Mr. Schlüter worked like clockwork.
Start with child porn, which everybody agrees is revolting, and find some politicians who want to appear like they are doing something.
Never mind that the blocking as such is ridiculously easy to circumvent in less than 10 seconds. The purpose at this stage is only to get the politicians and the general public to accept the principle that censorship in the form of “filters” is okay.
Once that principle has been established, it is easy to extend it to other areas, such as illegal file sharing. And once censorship of the Internet has been accepted in principle, they can start looking at ways to make it more technically difficult to circumvent.

This is how I see it; someone cries pedophile, child porn or what have you and everybody and their grandmother gets on their moral high horses and goes on a crusade destroying anything they find objectionable even if it has nothing to do with the initial trigger. Their excuses seems to always be the same too. Something similar to and including "protecting the innocence of the children" while blatantly ignoring the fact that children aren't as innocent as they were growing up when everyone was named John, George, and Mary (combined there are well over 10 million).
Fun fact: I know people who's job is to upload child porn to file sharing sites so the statement hat file sharing sites promote child porn becomes a reality.

I'm not going into a discussion of "Party Van" here, though IMO a good "Social Activist" strategy might be to get the guy's picture, combine it with quotes and post it on fliers all over his town. He'd be treated like a "Sex offender" by the same "Witch Hunt" mentality he enshrines because it suits his own purposes.

What I think their next goal is is to use the "Device used to circumvent copyright" issue and effectively "Ban" (by lawsuits that ruin small companies) any non-"Professional" level and priced music software. (along with video, 3D, programming, posting things online) This won't be to actually protect themselves from piracy, but to hinder "Independents" in a way that sets back the clock to the 70s and earlier, even the simplest "Recording Studio" costing more than a year's wages and all media outlets locked out save for what the "Big Dogs" own.
They probably won't be able to prevent all people from having/trading "Music software" but when a person records their stuff and puts it online and they start selling, then they send in the lawyers to ruin them with lawsuits claiming the likely truth that they used "Banned" (by property lien against programmer) software to produce it.
The internet is a chaotic force, all this crap will bite them in the ass later.

While I agree that child porn is being used as a scapegoat and that monitoring everyone's internet activity would do much more harm than good, the fact that so many people on this site actually support having sex with children is downright disturbing.
Anyone who expresses their opinion that children of any age can consent to sex all get their message voted up while people who say sex with children is wrong all get their messages voted down until they are no longer visible.
If people seriously think that a 6/7/8/whatever year old is capable of giving informed consent, then I genuinely believe there is something wrong with them. If they think a child can make a truly informed choice like that, then they should support the idea of a child being able to live completely independently in all aspects of life. I think you are misunderstanding. I don't see a double face. Everyone should know that rape is wrong and be against it. But pedophilia does not implies any sort of abuse, it's just a preference.

I don't know. I'm not a doctor. Maybe a physical development which happens only by age is required. Maybe not, maybe the capacity is there and needs only the proper knowledge to be used (which may or may not be possible to attain by a certain age).
Regardless of this, however, if that capacity can be determined, it means that it can be tested for.
I'm sure most people here are not saying that having sex with a child without proper consent is right, nor are they assuming that everyone can give such consent.

I live in Denmark and it should be noted that our Anti piracy group have given up trying to convict danish people of downloading from Torrents. Last year they tried to get 5 danish people convicted 4 didn't get convicted and the 5th plead guilty.
So yes they did ban ONE site. But they didn't really ban it. What they did was making ONE ISP, make their DNS to block the site. Meaning if you use a open DNS you can still access the site.

Many governments have secret blacklists to block sites with child porn, and ALL OF THEM have been abused to remove legit websites both intentionally and accidentally. Recently the EU said it would start filtering child porn sites. Too bad this doesn't get rid of them. More will spring up. Most child porn is traded via high encryption via obscure channels of the internet. This stops nothing in terms of profiting from child porn or the rape of children.
All a person has to do, whether they are from the MPAA, RIAA, or government is say a site has "illegal content" such as child porn and they can block it from the interwebs forever. If a company or government doesn't like what someone has to say like Wikileaks? They can just make it never happen.
The only thing that should be censored is censorship. I don't even believe child porn should be censored because of the huge risk of abuse it veils for manipulation. This isn't about people getting to see children abused. It's about the lynchpin of the very foundation of freedom of expression.

You see, children tend to be very naive about the world around them, and often don't make the best decision in a given situation. It's not rare to see a child who does something and later ends up regretting it. Things that no sane adult would do, given the same situation.
The potential for abuse here is immeasurable. A child is easily influenced and/or intimidated by adults. It's only natural, as they see adults as authoritative figures.
