Japan’s army is harnessing the power of moe in a series of anime styled recruiting posters, produced in collaboration with anime studio Ufotable and distributed to schools in the hopes of securing recruits.
The MOD’s official page (actually an initiative of the Tokushima Provincial Cooperation Office) for the campaign is here, in case anyone is having difficulty believing this (which seems unlikely).
The objective is said to be to “give schoolchildren and students a poster they’d like to put up in their rooms.”
For those wondering, the lady in the picture is an air force Staff Sergeant wearing a JASDF summer uniform.
According to some reports applicants for SDF positions are actually far in excess of requirements, suggesting the PR value of affixing a pleasant female face to the nation’s armed forces may be of rather greater utility than the rather dubious value of recruiting anime fans…

Please change it to sergeant. According to this rank insignia site, there is no such rank as staff sergeant in the JSDF.
Well, this is a good PR. I hope any otaku who gets into the SDF pass into boot camp. It may be a toned-down version of the IJA in WWII, but still mean.

The good thing about the america is that there are lots of rednecks and idiots to make into soldiers. But in japan what are they going to use? There general population? Because they certainally wont use foreigners.
The japanese will have a pretty lulz worthy army, it will be full of old men and/or japanese otaku screaming out "super magical bullet attack!!" or trying to launch a kamehameha wave.
Don't get me wrong, I think the japanese are pretty cool, but they don't seem like the military type anymore. Yeah they used to have a big army, but a lot has changed since then.

Amerifag here. I personally believe Japan should have its own legitimate military that isn't constrained because of a post-war agenda made by my own country.
Having a healthy Japanese military would help take the burden off of watching North Korea. Plus, Japan could react a lot quicker to a North Korean invasion of South Korea than the United States could.
I think it's time that Japan takes a step up to the plate for world security.

Heck, I'll join the JASDF, the JSDF, or any other Japan's Self-Defense Force... if they accept applicants from foreign country, and if Mecha were parts of the forces.

how does the JSDF compare to American military as far as public opinion? I mean is it looked down upon to join as someone who couldn't cut it in college? or is it seen as a career choice with benefits and receives respect for serving the country?

If the Japanese army wants to recruit more soldiers, all they have to do is make another gundam anime and make gundams so the action anime otakus who have always wanted a gundam will join, already trained because of the gundam animes.
Nothing is more fun than running around pretending you're the army when you're young (putting aside extra-curricular sexual activities for a moment) so why not give a load of hot Japanese women military costumes and get them to run around Tokyo pretending they're fighting and pulling essential sexy poses such as 'I tripped and fell', 'I bruised my arm' and 'i've got a rifle round in my buttock'. I feel this would work even better. Except for getting extremist feminists to join. Which they should.
