Square Enix has released an American comic based on upcoming futanari action RPG NieR Gestalt, and the rather striking comparisons between the Japanese and western character designs are sure to elicit a strong response, particularly when it comes to the hermaphrodite Kainé…
Hot and sexy futanari Kainé as she appears in the game (all versions) and in (Japanese) promotional materials:
As she appears in the American comic version being freely distributed online in support of the release:
The Japanese version compared:
Nier as he appears in NieR Replicant, a PS3 exclusive only being released in Japan:
Nier as he appears in NieR Gestalt, which is being released on the Xbox 360 and PS3 internationally as “NIER”:
It seems nothing will convince Japanese RPG publishers that Japanese art is anything but a liability, and it appears “make it manly and macho” (and preferably CG) is the limit of their embarrassingly crude understanding of how to appeal to a western audience.

Supposedly Nier in the non-Japanese version is supposed to be "another" and "older" Nier. Fair enough, but that doesn't explain why he's high on steroids.
As for Kaine, I find it laughable that Japan views that.....thing....as something you want to sell to a western market. Oddly enough, it kinda fits how a "regular" drag queen would look like.... *shivers*
Maybe that was the point ._.
I personally think the NA art is horrendous and the macho man does not fit this >_>
At start, Nier was such a nice kid (jp version) and then he had his first sexual experience with a hot nice futanari... That would change anyone in a real man (us version). Sad...so sad... but wait... america like that so it's ok.
America likes it rough.
hahahahahaha
I think they took the concept of hermaphrodite too literally
they made her look like a freakin man in the US art
Damn them
reminds me of rockman/megaman box art back in the 80's
Haha good reference, since that was a MAJOR failure and Capcom learned the lesson in the end.
you called pride....
i called bullshit
sick otaku bitches....
Just how old are you guys really -_-'
Oh man I remember that. It failed SO fucking hard.....it hurts my eyes to remember seeing it.
DEATH TO AMERICA !!!!!
I really don't see the problem here. The 3D version doesn't even attempt to make Kaine's face look cute, just androgynous at best. The American art just reflected that. The Japanese art is just a little bit more romanticized.
Pretty much. You need to understand its a matter of culture. Japanese *like* to make things "pretty". Fuck, even the guys are technically "pretty".
American art does attempt to show a more rough, but daresay, realistic point of view. Have you seen a chick angry? The face gets crunched up like that. Japanese shows them a little pissed off - but certainly not to the dynamic as the American shot.
I *DO* prefer the Japanese aesthetic, as it certainly captures a more appealing look; but you kinda gotta see it for the other perspective as well.
Nevertheless, fairly bold marketing attempt.
I wouldn't call american art "realistic". Look at her lips? I think huge lips are the american equivalent of the huge eyes anime art typically has.
yeah, she also packs realistically (comically?) thick eyebrows too
realism ftw!
I didn't mean photo-realism. But come one, compared to anime? At least her eyes actually close on both ends and her lips actually have a tint. I like anime too, so don't think I'm trying to defend american art.
Its two different countries. One offers something "pretty", the other offers a bit more of an image of war. Sure it isn't anywhere near as pretty as the Japanese portrayal, but what are you gonna do?
Which leads us back to my original comment:
Nier is supposed to be a gritty, bloody action game, so the American artwork reflected that aspect of it. The Japanese art, on the other hand, chose to romanticize it's characters. They made Kaine look pretty even though she's supposed to be a battle-hardened warrior (cursed with being a hermaphrodite by a demon) who swears a lot.
These are two very different approaches in "selling" the game to their target audiences. Otakus can say whatever they want about the "chunky" American art, but action-game fans will still buy it.
Read what I said. I didn't intend PHOTO-realism.
What does it matter? Its not like the anime version is any more a realistic portrayal than the American art. Its two different takes on the same character. One looks prettier, but certainly less life-like (JPN). The American one look far grittier, but certainly captures "anger" better than the delicate-appearance of her japanese counter-part.
I'm not trying to argue any side. Sure the American one loses its beauty; but I think it's capturing a much different concept.
Realistic? Yet somehow the American artstyle looks lazier.
They'll buy it, and then bitch when the in-game art looks nowhere close. Not to mention, I don't think too many American action fans are even into jrpgs...action oriented or not.
As long as I get the one with the futanari...
lol at amerifags , who`re always ending up with ugly shit
And once again, companies pick up the ugliest shit possible, or attempt to copy "popular" hero archetypes to sell games, and fail.
Yep, it's truly a piece of FAIL
Why can't they just leave the original art? Would it kill somebody?
Apparently they think it will.
you would think that they would leave it as is in an attempt to save money instead of spending more to make new art.
Animu graphics are good when they came from Japan. Turkey and tomato are good when they came from Amerika. Any questions?
I don't think they realize most Americans LIKE the original art.. even the ones who aren't up to date with it, like us Sankaku'ers. *Sarcasm*
Anime/manga styled art does look a lot better than most of the CG artwork I see on covers.
They took it from cute to transvestite fail...
Blah. I thought we were done with all this stupid shit years ago? After they kept fucking up the Street Fighter game covers. Anyone remember the version where it's just fucking bricks instead of cool anime shit? I'm glad to see how far we've regressed...
Muscular i get , tough i get as well but why not make them good-looking too. I`m pretty sure ugly is not an requirement!
There goes Japan being all racist again. They need a tidal wave... AND FAST!
There goes America being all.... ugly again.
I love the implication that either versions are good.
Shit is just shit ladies and gents, doesn't matter what country it's from.
Damn America, they actually turned her into a man instead of a futa girl..
america sure love some muscles
even they give some muscle to Kainé lips
Everything from the super bulky hero, to the art turn me off for a game I was slightly interested in. Japanese version is too expensive to import for a game that is not going to be the second coming.
Well she DOES have a dick. Since America doesn't like to show dicks from what I hear, they just made everything else look manly.
I don't care for either the big buff guy or the pretty boy. I rather just play as the futanari.
W/E, the comic book versions look better. As for the game covers, its a matter of taste.
The American version looks like it's going for a more "Angelina Jolie" kind of look. I suspect they think the American audience would like like that better than the original.
D: NO! I want the hot bishonen and hot futa chick! Damn you Americanization! DX Why did they change it? The Japanese art is absolutely beautiful. Our stupid gamer fanboys complain about things being "manly" in games, but fuck that man! This is just ugly! I miss you bishi and pretty futa chick TT^TT I'd totally do you both... At the same time >:3
Actually if you compare the in-game screens, the American version is more accurate. The Japanese version is just plain false advertisement.
Lololol
The Nier in the american version looks way more badass! even more badass than Geralt from the witcher. Fuck you fags who want a stick thin emo kid as your protagonist in a game.
The western art for Kaine is far more accurate for the fairly shitty rendering that Kaine is represented by in game. Like fuck, the model is ugly in game can you blame the western artist?
Fair enough if the game had a cel-shaded anime aesthetic, the Japanese promo art would be better. I prefer the Japanese art over the models in the game and the western version, but come on it looks nothing like the in-game model!
America version sucks so bad.
Japanese version is obviously better..
Nah man... To be honest that kind of marketing works. I work at gamestop in NYC and if you're most guys that come into the store are guys who're gonna buy shit like that on the cover. Smart shit if you ask me.
Sad but true...Sad but bloody true...
Ah well, someday they'll learn to appreciate 'pretty' anime covers and we'll hopefully get NieR: Replicant here in the US...
