Top 10 Male Characters of May Newtype – … Hideyoshi?

kyonko_gender_swap_dvd_cover

The Top 10 Male Characters chart from the new May issue of Newtype is very similar to the previous month’s, with the top half virtually unchanged and the ever ambiguous Hideyoshi holding onto “his” #3 spot for another month.

It should be fairly self-explanatory, but the colored squares with arrows besides the characters represent the character’s ranking change; green boxes represent no change compared to last month, oranges mean a higher placement.

Squint to see the # inside the squares that gives last month’s position for that character (click to enlarge the image).

Newtype Top 10 Male Characters – May 2010

newtype_male_character_rankings_may_2010

1- Kyon (Suzumiya Haruhi no Shoushitsu)

2. Lelouch Lamperouge (Code Geass)

3. Hideyoshi Kinoshita (Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu)

4. Kira Yamato (Gundam Seed)

5. Sakata Gintoki (Gintama)

6. Edward Elric (Fullmetal Alchemist)

7. Orihara Izaya (Durarara!!)

8. Setsuna F. Seiei (Gundam 00)

9. Banagher Links (Gundam Unicorn)

10. Shizuo Heiwajima (Durarara!!)

Kyon and Lelouch, both holding their same placements from last month, are to be expected this high on the list, given the freshness of the especially well-reviewed Haruhi movie and the overall popularity of Code Geass amongst Newtype readers.

Hideyoshi’s spot at #3 for a repeat month must surely be the most amusing part of this month’s Top 10 – some might wonder if this is even the appropriate list.

Kira Yamato’s spot, even more so than Lacus’ in the female category, is practically a permanent monument to Gundam Seed at this point, so no surprises there, and neither are Sakata or Edward’s spots.

Recent show Durarara!! managed to wrest away 2 positions on the list, an impressive task given how these sort of lists tend to mostly include a limited number of fan favorites from the overall top otaku favorites of recent years.

Gundam Unicorn’s awkwardly named Banagher Links also made a first time entrance, although still landing after 00’s Setsuna, and well behind Seed’s incomparable Yamato.

See also the corresponding female list.
