The latest title in the much esteemed Xenosaga/Xenogears line of games, Xenoblade, is a causing a stir for all the wrong reasons.

Xenosaga vs Xenoblade:

What happened to the main heroine’s face is a matter of some speculation. 2ch has gamely provided a Photoshop correction:

The latest trailer puts a brave face on things:

Anyone could be forgiven for thinking this was a PSP title with rather poor graphics, but it is in fact due for a spring release on the Wii.

Way to do research, guys. Xenoblade has no connection to the Xenosaga series, other than the fact that it's being made by Monolith Soft.

    Credibility fail.

Indeed. If they make it a part of the Xeno series then people are naturally going to compare it to the previous games in the series, whether it's part of the same story or not. Expecting people NOT to do so is rather like expecting no one will compare the latest Final Fantasy game to the previous ones-which would just be downright silly.

Still, making this part of the Xeno franchise is possibly just a marketing move on their part. But if you want to slap a well-known franchise's name onto a game to try to attract attention to it, then you'd better be prepared to live with the inevitable comparisons. I'm looking at you too, Konami...

This game has nothing to do with Xenosaga, plus its on the Wii. What do you expect from such a broken man such as Tetsuya Takahashi? he failed the last time didn't he?

    Comment by Anonymous

You keep telling yourself that. All of the Xeno games are connected.

No they aren't. Xenosaga can't ever be properly connected to Xenogears and Xenoblade won't connect to either.

That's nothing but fanservice. Plot-wise, Xenosaga contradicts Perfect Works and that's all there is to it. Maybe they might have gotten to reimagine Xenogears in the Xenosaga series one day, but Namco killed it before they got there.

This isn't the fault of the Wii, this is the fault of lazy developers. There are already Wii, hell, even GC games with better faces than this.

This isn't related to Xenosaga at all. Are you retarded? Did you do any research before you posted this?

I don't know if you guys ever heard of a little title called Super Mario Bros., but what matters is gameplay. If I want super high res graphics, I'll watch the Godfather.

not completely incorrect but to be clear
    Xenogears != Xenosaga != Xenoblade

    translation =
technically Xenosaga had nothing to do with the plot of Xenogears either

there is no unified Xenogears/Xenosaga universe, no matter how much Xeno-fans want to believe otherwise

pretty much every time Takahashi's jumped to a new ship he's had to cut the previous incarnation short and start again with a new series of the same "Xeno- concept"

Takahashi has said yes he reused some ideas he used before or ideas he was planning to use (but didn't get to), but Xenosaga isn't technically related to Xenogears either, only based on some general setting concepts he wrote up a long time ago.

umm i hate to point this out but the npc char (the doctor)in the xenogears gamealso has the same last name as shion, and in part three in the libery puzel game theres a pic of shion's "other" brother who looks like the doctor from xenogears and not surpisingly has the same name.so tectly theres a conection between the two even has thin as this. but anyway i recall reading there was an other game posabely a fighting/rpg that stared cos-mos only what ever happend to that?

    No, seriously.

    http://www.wired.com/gamelife/2010/01/the-last-story-wii/
'It was originally shown at E3 2009 with the title Monado: The Beginning of the World. But one little switcheroo and it’ll probably sell twice the copies. Nintendo’s not even going to bother saying that the name change is a coincidence. “We decided to call it Xenoblade to honor Mr. Tetsuya Takahashi who poured his soul into making this and who has been working on the Xeno series,” said Iwata.'

Xenosaga was said to be a reinterpretation of pre-episode 5 XG episodes. Xenoblade isn't even that - it's just a rebrand of a totally unrelated story. You're right in that there isn't a unified XS/XG universe, but this isn't even as related as those two were.

Doing another reinterpretation wouldn't make much sense though. At least Takahashi is the writer.

Ever thought that he is forced to say that.
I mean Xenogears is bound to another company, if he and his team change the company and make a new game which shall continue his previous universe he can do it, but he will get into trouble wuth patent rights if he just says yes he did it that way.

To be fair, it doesn't look that bad design-wise. It does, however, disappoint graphic-wise. The hair, clothes and face remind me of the FFXII's engine, just not quite as polished.

It's rare to see a facial structure rendered in anime-esque style that either doesn't fit the golden ratio or doesn't intentionally shoot for childlike features.

She has a slightly retrognathic lower mandible, the distance between her mouth and chin is relatively high, and her slightly-hooked nose protrudes noticeably from her face. To make a long story short, she looks like Margaret Hamilton minus the prosthetics and makeup used to transform her into the Wicked Witch of the West.

There's nothing wrong with the technology or polycounts, here. It's just an ugly face. So what? Not every fictional character has to be blessed with a supermodel face. I think it lends realism to stir at least one or two average-looking mugs into the mix.

I have two points of view in the argument. Graphics do NOT equal gameplay, Xenoblade looks like it is going to be an amazing game based off the universe alone.

The other one is that the PS2 is quite a bit weaker than the Wii, but my guess is that with Xenoblade they wanted to keep it to one disc, and thats why it doesn't look as good as the 2 DVD Xenosaga Episode 3 (look at the graphics of Episode 2 and get back to me)

i'm sorry, i don't care how good the gameplay or the story is, if everything else looks like crap, i'm not going to play it.

take kingdom hearts 358/2 days. i know it's only a DS title, but even for the DS, graphically, it's TERRIBLE. makes it hard to play, imo, and KH is one of my all time favorite franchises.

i imagine that this bizarre sort of rendering is going to be distracting to anyone who plays/has played many other games on different systems.

    Comment by Anonymous
    23:46 12/04/2010 # ! Neutral (0)

That's because Kingdom Hearts doesn't have good gameplay to support the terrible story. So without the good graphics to highlight the Disney cameos it's pretty much worthless.

All developers ever do with the Wii is take a big fat shit on it, knowing they will make lots of money despite the lack of effort.

I really do think the Wii will go down in history as ironically, Nintendo's worst console.

Well duh, this isn't a turn-based game. They can't just take the other characters and monsters off the screen when they're attacking like they did in Xenosaga.

This looks more like Xenogears in style too, this area reminds me of the forest and Dazil.

I tell you what though, the character models may be pretty shonky but maybe that's due to the rest of the game. The sense of scale in the environments is impressive, and some of the screens I've seen show a truly beautiful world. I think they've sacrificed some of the power of the Wii to have that lusciously thick grass.

I'm actually rather interested in this game, the art direction reminds me of FFXII, which can only be a good thing.
