A teacher who included such searching questions as “what is the name of my cat?” and “what is your name?” in a midterm science test has been told to stop it.
The science teacher, in his forties, was found to have conducted a midterm biology test on a class at the Fukuoka high school with the question:
“( ) is name of the cat who’s taking care of teacher’s house. Lately he likes ( ).”
Other questions included what kind of car the teacher drove, what colour it was, and what its number plate was.
“Please enter your name, class and seat number in a clearly legible way” was an actual question on his test papers.
The teacher himself explained he “wanted to check whether they’ve been listening to what I tell them in class” – presumably his cat features frequently in the class syllabus. He claimed he did not grade student answers to the question about their name.
The school principal made up a different excuse: “Some of our students don’t understand science so we require they be given questions they can answer – we tell teachers not to mark these questions.” He called the teacher’s choice of questions “inappropriate” all the same.
Reportedly the teacher wanted to avoid being handed blank test papers, and so deliberately introduced filler questions to allow students to answer.
This kind of “special consideration” saw blank papers disappear and his students getting average marks of 90%, some 20% higher than the school average.
Tackling the issue by actually educating his students (or at least training them) to be able to answer the test questions seems not to have occurred to him.
The principal gave the teacher an oral reprimand (incidentally often the same punishment meted out to teachers who molest or beat their students) and had him revise the tests.
The average score of the class he tested on his cat’s name is now said to be in the sixties.
The same school was recently found to have employed two part-time teachers on licenses which had expired, for over 5 years.

idk hat the big deal is I know there are US teacher who do that (questions about stuff talked about in class but not about the subject per say) for the same reason but it's usually one question not 4
Well, it's clear that the point would be that going too far with the personal information questions, even if they have been said in class, kinda carries a "Have you been a good stalker lately?" connotation.
And really, it depends a lot on the type of test. Asking about the name of a cat in a math test is obviously idiotic, whereas asking "Is this a question?" in a philosophy test is a perfectly valid question.

I had a teacher who did this, but she was super hott.
also she gave forewarning that she would ask the questions and had them in her lectures and power points. she would throw in things like "Dirt is good to eat." and then ask the question "___ is good to eat" not hard if you were paying attention and I don't see a problem with giving a few free points if it proves the person was actually listening in class.
I had an A-level physics teacher that gave us a multiple choice test where every one of the 30 odd questions had the answer C. By about the 4th or 5th question I started to question my answers. Needless to say noone got 100%.

Whether Anime or science tests, the Japanese are the masters of filler.
Compared to some of the other stories I read about teachers in Japan this is pretty tame heck I'd even go as far as to say it's good behavior.
A teacher with a sense of humor is a good thing.

One question asked what was the name of the professor's home town. Another asked who was my favorite teacher.
I think it's cute, and if the class knows that there will be questions on his cat, they're more likely to both listen and be entertained by the lecture. Students in Japan are under enough stress as it is.

My Life Drawing teacher did this to her classes, except it was more class-related. It was something along the lines of "What should students be doing when the model is modeling?"
