KnJ is certainly more serious, but I think they both have things to add. The protagonist Aoki sensei (and I think even Reiji counts even if he has his troubles, he's like Ryoga basically) has more realistic feelings and apprehensions and a normal job and responsibilities and so forth.
It's not black and white since KnJ doesn't have the clear villainous archtype that LP has, less sensational and more slice of life.
