That mysterious staple of East Asian street fashion, the white surgical mask, once again shows it has more uses than merely making Japan appear to be a nation on its way to an operating theatre:
For those fortunate souls still staring slack-jawed in incomprehension at the masks, an explanation might be in order – the masks, eyewateringly dubbed “Machuku” (“masuku” with a “chu”), are of course designed to be worn with the 2D character on the inside, adjacent to the wearers lips.
Unlike the increasingly popular alternative of carrying a dakimakura around everywhere, this option has the distinct advantage of leaving both hands free and allowing the maniac to pass as only an unfortunate hay-fever sufferer, conscientious plague carrier or creepy mask wearing loon.
The masks are available internationally for those so inclined.
All that remains is for some cunning soul to license a Louise or Haruhi version…
