A nationwide survey of 23,388 Japanese has revealed who the most famous seiyuu in the land is.
The (female) seiyuu ranking, based on awareness and name recognition rather than obsessive devotion:
1. Nana Mizuki
2. Aya Hirano
3. Maaya Sakamoto
4. Romi Park
5. Rie Kugimiya
6. Yukana
7. Miyuki Sawashiro
8. Ami Koshimizu
9. Tomoko Kaneda
10. Yūko Gotō
56% of respondents could not name one (unsurprising as the survey covered the general population), and it seems male seiyuu operate on a different level – the most popular, Kenichi Suzumura (Ouran, Gintama) and Mamoru Miyano (Death Note, Gundam 00), only secured 8% each.

The difference between male and female seiyuu is the amount of diversification of work they do. Females tend to do singing, modelling etc whilst males tend to only do the voice acting and slowly wither away into the abyss of the b-list.

Aya Hirano is overrated. She's more of a porn star than a seiyuu, as she only has 2 recognisable voices (Haruhi + the loli voice) and spends most of her time in stupid photo magazines.
I used to overlook Emiri Katou as well (from Lucky Star), but after several recent shows (Baka test, Ookami Kakushi), she HAS talent compared to Aya. Same goes with Kaori Fukuhara with Seto in Needless.
Another one would be Saori Hayami, Kana Hanazawa and Haruka Tomatsu. These 3 rose up to fame with multiple series, not because of KyoAni bait. >_>

Megumi Hayashibara is the best seiyuu from all times.
To be honest, I don't really like Aya Hirano for some reason... That one of her albums is called RIOT GIRL just further put me off. (If you know what Riot Grrrl is about you'd know why.)
