“Make This Into ASCII Art!” Vipper Challenge

The denizens of 2ch’s VIP board have challenged themselves to turn a series of moe and not so moe images into the ASCII art (usually simply called “AA” in Japanese) so beloved of 2ch.
A glimpse into the making of this AA:
Just why 2ch is so fond of AA is an interesting question – possibly the lack of even basic image handling on 2ch promotes its use over the obnoxious Photoshop antics favoured internationally.
That 2ch is apparently eternally stuck with technology and design which would have been antiquated even two decades ago is probably a factor too – it is little wonder so many Japanese prefer to read 2ch in edited form on more modern sites.

There are programs that automaticaly convert bitmap pictures into ASCII, and I see little sense in doing that by hand, which the above artists are doing
Most programs don't convert well, and they tend to convert the background, too, which make the AA look ugly.
There's a thread on 2ch where you can just post a pic and request it be made into an AA, or an AA to be edited (like changing the head). Sometimes they can be scarily fast. :P

You're right it's Shift-JIS and some of it may be unicode.
True ascii is just characters 0 though 127

As well as some unique extended character sets that were designed for making art on hardware that lacked bit mapped modes such as PETSCII

Then you have ANSI 0 though 255 8-bit IBM-PC DOS characters with 16 foreground and 8 background colors.

I loved making ascii art. Although mine never used fixed sized font characters. It was more challenging that way.
