Funimation’s English release of top pantsu anime Strike Witches is all but here, with the DVD due at the end of the month. To commemorate the occasion, Funimation and Sankaku Complex are offering users the chance to get some free copies of the DVD.
The latest trailer once again shows off their deft handling of the linguistic minefield inherent in the different meanings of “pants” (and yes it does have subtitles and it is claimed to be completely uncensored):

Funimation suck.
What?
Why is this getting +rep, FUNi is great. Free episodes online all the DVDs come dual-dub with Japanese subs.
You only get free episodes if you live in the U.S.
DVDs, again, U.S.
Funimation punish those who aren't American.
Therefore, they suck.
P.S. Also, dubs suck.
Your loss,dude.
@MARI0:
Ever heard of regional locking?
Ever heard of region free DVD players?
So, in order to watch one DVD box set, I'd have to fork out more money to buy a region free DVD player?
Sorry, but no.
lol, talk about broken logic. They're an American company. Of course they're going to make their products for Americans. You can't expect them to make these for the whole friggin world. It's no different than importing from Japan. Just import from America if you want it that bad.
Free online episodes *only* if you live in the U.S.
DVDs only if you live in the U.S.
And let's not get started with them releasing the censored only version of DitVB on DVD.
It's not even the censorship I hate - it's the lack of big clear warnings that content was changed. It sucks buying a show or manga and then realizing after it's too late that you didn't get all of it, and can't.
You can buy the DVDs from Amazon.com wherever you are if I'm not mistaken. Censorship is reprehensible but it's not like Japanese publishers are any better.
Their draconian attitude to website country access is indefensible though.
The market size for translated anime just isn't large enough to support regional distributors for every niche title (sales are small enough in Japan) - publishers should really secure global licenses and abandon that model, only way they'll fully access the same audience that fansubs find, especially digitally.
Nah, they ain't abandoning it. They probably are still hoping for foreigners to buy it at a heavily inflated price in anticipation for more profit.
Just speculating, but they may have thought that doing so is better than incurring cost for extra distribution and localization. Either way, the fansubs community is not gonna die easy. Dowloading for free > Pay for any price, y'all cheap leeches!
DVD, ha! Is that like VHS? We want blu-ray!
This show sucked ass. The plot never moves forward, pust the same shit from beginning to end. oh, and a second letter from her 'dead' father. Fucking stupid.
the dubbing really fails
I'm sorry to disagree, strongly. FUNimation did their usual butcher job. The voice acting is mis-cast and mis-directed. Whoever does Mio Sakimoto voice doesn't seem to have bothered to watch the show. Yoshika comes off like a whiny little baby, when in fact, it is established from the first time we see her that she is headstrong, single-minded, etc. In fact, none of the characterizations are as strong or accurate as they should be. The dialogue lacks the humor of the original as well. Funimation seems to assume we are all stupid, and need help with the hard words, and concepts.
Here are just two examples that set my teeth on edge:
I'll bet Sakimoto-san knows the difference between a HEDGEHOG and a PORCUPINE, and why the reference to the Neuroi ship as a hedgehog makes sense and the translated "porcupine" does not.
Episode two…. the narrator's voice, like all the secondary vocal acting on this show, is simply unappealing. Annoying really. And that particular opening narration is SO poorly written.
Also in epi 2… we're back from the OP… long camera shot of fleet…. In the original, we hear distant alarms and the muffled voice of the flight deck chief over the intercom. In the American version you have loud screaming and unnecessary "military-speak" babble…. Funimation's idea of "realism" I assume.
Again, I cannot emphasize enough how absolutely DREADFUL the voice acting in this series is. And it is clear that most of the problem is in the voice director(s). I still cannot get over how mis-cast Sakimoto is.
OH! And how could I forget the fact that they changed Perrine's unrequited love of the Major to "brown-noseing" Can't be saying nuthin positive about no queers, huh? Again, typical.
Funimations' usual hack job of script buggery. Stupid, senseless changes to the dialogue. Funimation seems fond "interpreting" rather than "translating". I hear a lot of you complain about fansubbers, but the WORST fansub beats anything out of this studio by miles.
Yeah, yeah,... "a lot of people like dubs"... fine.
For me, it's like chewing aluminum foil.
God help us if they get their fucking hands on K-ON!
"God help us if they get their fucking hands on K-ON!"
- exactly, God help us :)
I HATE Funimation dubs; Love their subs.
Strike Witches
Another example of cancer killing anime
Go back to watching your "mature" anime, Narutard.
Wow, this dub is horrible. The voices are completely devoid of the characteristics they have in the original.
Here's a tip, STOP SMOKING CRACK WHILE WATCHING ANIME
Funimation: We give free loli.
FUNimation knows where the lolicons are ha ha.
I've submitted my entry......All thats left is to wait for the reply. :3
to think SanCom & Funimation teaming up....... :3
I already have my copy, so it's kind of a moot point for me. Great show by the way. I'm glad I waited for the DVD release to watch it.
erm I kind of don't understand if I can take part if I'm in Europe not USA
Feel free to. You don't need to be logged in either, in case anyone is wondering about that.
know how the winners are chosen?
CANADANE HAS APPROVED
Already Preordered via amazon a long time ago, but I'll enter anyway.
I'm proud of Funimation. They really do know what they're doing here.
You ARE being sarcastic. Right???
I just hope they keep it up.. Vampire Bund is going to be published by them too..
i pre-ordered it from rightstuf.. turns out i got it by this past friday. not only that but turns out it completely messed up my bank account and now im sitting in a negative zone. *shakes fists* and i thought it was supposed to be available by the 30th.
is it a bird?...of course not you dumbass lol
well this sick
Thought to self - Why couldn't they have considered wearing armour? Y'know, so one rogue bullet couldn't kill them off?
Oh, wait, I remembered - They're the main characters in a loli series.
sankaku sellin' out pimpin poorly localized jokes! hooray for the marketing goldmine of weaboo!
"implying that localizing isn't poor itself"
*Sigh* We need to get a life. Including me.
U mad?
Dubs? Wazzat? ^_^
Well, it doesn't hurt if it's Dual Audio with Subs.
That's what it is. Dual Audio with subs according to Amazon.
Thank God, I just watched a clip on the Funimation sight and the Dub is Horrible. I only watched about 30 seconds before I had to shut it off....
Yoshika's voice was like nails on a chalkboard and Lynette sounded like she belonged in a porn vid....
God Awful; but then again I guess it would be hard to take the show seriously if you were a voice actor....
Actually, I can definitely confirm that, as Funimation sent me my copy 1 week ago(I preordered, therefore I got it early for some reason). It is most definitely NOT censored, and the Japanese track is still intact.
Are anime DVDs still released without Dual-Audio and subs? I'm pretty sure I haven't seen one for at least a decade.
Every anime release hear in the States has either dual audio w/ subs, or Japanese audio w/ subs only.
Dunno, must be something the Queen of England says to a new knight, perhaps?
COMMANDER! PERMISSION TO MISPRONOUNCE JAPANESE NAMES?!
GRANTED!! -.-
LOL, so unbelievably true. please funimation, quit taking japanese animes and dubbing them, you manage to ruin every single last one you touch.
Plus english voice actors fail in general.
I prefer subtitles to dubbing. I always feel like dubs dumbs down the context somewhat, and the voice acting doesn't quite have me convinced all the time.
