Japan’s latest high speed train looks set to be called “Hatsune” after Miku fans noticed it shared a colour-scheme with the virtual idol and flooded an online competition to select a name for the train.
The train tself, the latest “E5” class of shinkansen with a top speed of 300kph, is due to service lines in Tohoku. The choice of colour scheme appears to be coincidence.
Fans noticing the similarity immediately began a campaign on Mixi and Twitter in order to flood the polls with their choice of “Hatsune.”
The voting itself remains open until the end of the month, but with no other organised efforts to name the train it seems unlikely anything can stop Miku fans, short of disqualification.
On the other hand, normals and even some Miku fans are not happy:
Creepy.
Doesn’t your crotch get hot knowing our Miku-chan is now something train otaku fap over?
They do look a bit alike somehow.
It’s an exceedingly ugly Miku-chan…
They’ll be guys who splatter themselves on the train you know.
Stop that, creepy otaku.
Won’t they be happy that they can “get inside” Miku?
It’s absolutely disgusting that you’d come up with that…
Don’t name an ugly vehicle like this after Miku-chan you damn idiots!

just a matter of time before someone gets run over by it...
Unlikely (suicides excluded, of course). Shinkansen tracks are _always_ protected from interlopers by fences or simply running on viaducts, and platforms have waist-high barriers designed to open only when a train is boarding. You have to be either trying to kill yourself or really, really stupid in order to get hit by one of these trains.
I can finally fulfill my dream of getting inside miku ... although its not exactly what i had in mind
It's exactly what i had in mind
I'am so gonna be the first chikan on that train...
FINAL FORM RIDE HATSUNE MIKU~!
well i will just do the usual...
fap fap fap fap fap...
since it's miku related they should just keep it as a related.
maybe Miku Hayasa. should be.
lol
It's funny when Colbert does this stuff, it's just sad when Otaku do it
That includes you
and me
Typical japanese, making everything into something from anime, and they wonder why the industry is dying.
we can enter hatsune miku now yay!... reminds me of the song chocolate train haha~
I wish we had trains like that around where I live. This place would be so much cooler.
If this is approved, Miku will have to be futanari. Train is way too phallic.
Oh well, pretend it's a big clit and go for it.
No, It's just one of her twin tails. just need a couple more vehicles and we'll have a Megazord Miku.
From what I understand on the website, it name will be "Suica"... anyone can confirm this ??
no, it's Suica-compatible. Suica is the name of IC ticket cards issued by JR East.
I'll definitely steal that "Miku"...
Another example of sacrificing aesthetics for functionality.
A-W-E-S-O-M-E lol
i dont think it was a coincidence, think the CEO is a mikutard who didn't have the guts to say it in the open.if it was just the color, okay, thats a coincidence; but the color and name poll? that just happens to be too convenient.
The train design might be a turn-off to many, but in the world of efficient travel, speed IS beauty.
On the other hand, everyone wants to ride in a train that simply oozes with style.
*Sigh...*
So, did the negi-twirling goddess' fans get their wish, or the organizers simply pulled the competition off due to "unforseen and regretful circumstances"?
The only way this could be better would be a TGV or a Paris Transilien train painted in Hatsune Miku colors.
(RER colors are good enough though ^^)
Why is it so ugly ? The shape of it looks like a big .... whatever, shouldn't it have colors after a male character ...
Hatsune: Miku in Disguise..
"Vocaloids, transform and roll out!"
*transformers sound*
I'm guessing it'll end up getting named after one of the conventional trains that went along the Ueno - Aomori route before the Tohoku Shinkansen opened. "Tsugaru" seems the most likely candidate, though JR East could come up with something completely different if they so choose.
I doubt "Hatsune" will be in the running; if anything it fits more along the naming scheme of the Tokaido/Sanyo Shinkansen, which has "Kodama" (echo), "Hikari" (light), and "Nozomi" (wish).
And the USA high speed rail line is close to competing with the likes of Europe, Japan, China... er, nevermind.
USA rail sucks. Better now than 10 years ago, but still sucks.
It would be much better and much more fun if it would be colored like leek/negi - it has the shape for it :)
Cathay Pacific?
These Otaku really need to get a life.
I'd say it's pretty unlikely that it'll get named "Hatsune". While JR East polls the masses, they reserve the right to name it whatever they want, and they usually name new Shinkansen services after the older, conventional-rail services they replace. This makes "Tsugaru" the most obvious candidate by far, though it could be something else evocative of Aomori Prefecture. Such as... erm... apples. Or rice. Or hicks.
I would not, however, object to "Hatsune" being used on the Tokaido / Sanyo Shinkansen, where the name fits much more cleanly with the Kodama (echo) / Hikari (light) / Nozomi (wish) scheme. Let's leave potential stopping-patterns for the hardcore rail-types to speculate upon.
"Hatsukari" and "Hakutsuru" are also possibilities, although these services were eliminated back in 2002. ("Tsugaru" is still running as a relay between Aomori and the present Shinkansen terminus at Hachinohe, but not for much longer.)
Everyone here is retarded.
Why does this thing make me think of Macross?
Should've named it the Rankansen.
Seriously that is the dumbest-looking train ever. Don't name it after Miku!
Shinkansen train VS roadroller frontal collision! Who'll win!?
(a: the giant pink octopus)
Just as planned.
"Won’t they be happy that they can “get inside” Miku?"
xD PURE GOLD!
This is the start of a fetish for trains xD (including the red one of course).
A start? 1chan already exists.
I bet that, even after it wins the poll, they don't name it that. Same way Colbert didn't get his ISS space module and the Mets didn't make "Never Gonna Give You Up" their 8th inning song. Internet polls never turn out the way the creators want and and they always puss out.
I think it's a relatively harmless association. Hatsune Miku is a family-friendly image, very Japanese, and has some international appeal.
It may not be what the train company expected, but it's hardly a 'damage control' situation.
I would have went further and seen it as a chance for a great PR stunt.
Partner up with Crypton and make it Mikus official train.
So tempted to make crass joke about running a train on Miku...
Wait, is that a train or a MOTHERFUCKING SPACESHIP!?
Well high speed trains and spaceships seek the maximum energy efficiency through aerodynamics, don't they?
No.
Has no air in space, so don't need aerodynamics.
well how do you get into space or back into the earths atmostphere without aerodynamics?
Of course, they are in space to begin with, right?
NASA won't send a rectangular ship to space, at least I wouldn't...
We are borg, we come in cubes.
I wouldn't mind coming in a cube, if you know what I mean.
There might not be atmosphere in space but there is on Earth and other planets so until we start building ships in space with no intentions of landing on planets we still need aerodynamics.
There isn't any air in space, so no...
facepalm/
There's an air in space museum.
somewhere at the end of that line I just know those track point straight up in the sky
Moving at the speed of light, baby.
