A Korean couple who allowed their baby daughter to starve to death whilst they obsessively played an MMO have been arrested.
The couple, a 41-year-old-man and a 25-year-old woman, lived near Seoul.
Reportedly they became engrossed in MMO “Prius Online,” playing the game for long stretches whilst they reared a virtual character known as “Anima.”
However, whilst playing they only fed their infant daughter once a day with powdered milk; after one 12 hour gaming session they returned to find her dead, having succumbed to malnutrition.
The couple fled but were later arrested. They issued sorrowful statements lamenting their neglect.
Police explained:
“The couple seemed to have lost their will to live a normal life because they didn’t have jobs and gave birth to a premature baby. They indulged themselves in the online game of raising a virtual character so as to escape from reality, which led to the death of their real baby.”

I've hear about it on TV news 2 days ago... A very sad story.
People dying from over-indulging in video games aren't THAT rare, young or old. Passing out from malnutrition or lack of sleep is too common but death just seems to me a step above that.
Judging by the amount of crazy stories regarding kids on SanCom, Asians in general seem to be a crazy group of people...
this is just sad
LOL COREANS
This probably sounds really horrible to say but, it's better the child died young instead of taking years of suffering.
I remember my childhood, a lot of times I wished my mother had gotten an abortion, even to this day I still suffer a lot from depression(even medicated).
I was adopted at the age of one by my mothers dad, to give you an idea of what he was like, I'm the forth child he has raised, First uncle has depression and extremely bad anxiety(also abused my great grandmothers dog, which lead him to run away, he returned but only to run away and never came back). Second uncle had depression and O.D on drugs(he was the only person who actually cared about me), Mother has severe depression, and me, I have severe depression, and untreated A.D.D.
Through my childhood I've been punched, slapped, sworn at for no reason, had things thrown at me, been called horrible things and all by my grandad. After being adopted, my mother had 2 other children, but she kept them, makes you feel loved huh?
So when I say it's better the child died young instead of suffering for years, I can only speak from my own experiences..
When I was younger, I suffered from depression. I wont reveal any details, but it was pretty serious. I've recovered completely, though, so I'm not sure if I agree with you. Life can feel like hell, but you can get over it.
I hope you'll get over your depression, someday.
Thank you, I appreciate the kind words. I too hope someday I'll be better.
I hope you can find a way to put your hope into action.. perhaps adopt a dog from the pound, one that needs your help and affection and that will give its love freely to you. Pets have been a blessing in my life. Best wishes to you.
Maybe your mother had more resources later on rather than preferring them to you.
Anyway, you have your life ahead of you, I shall pray for it to go well. : )
lol, I thought the couple starved their virtual baby when I read the title.
The poor child... T_T
She didn't deserve to die...
gee i just read about the korean marrying a pillow and now a korean couple neglecting care for a baby? wtf Korea? I'm losing respect by the minute. >:(
Bad parenting at its finest.
Recall Prius too.
Better die now than to be raised by that kind of f***ed up parents. Still.... it is a sad but ironic.
i tought the couple raised a virtual baby and they starved...
I actually heard of this from a friend...omg how could someone do such a thing. But in this day in society I guess anything ridiculous can happen. Although, I would still not blame this on the video game, it is completely the responsibility of a human being to take care of what they need to do in life, I think this was just pure neglect and irresponsibility of the parents. Still very silly and fatal...
*In Kaede Fuyou's voice*
People like them...Deserved to go to Silent Hill!!!
They could of stopped to look after their child come on it's their child they should of!
this just makes the news on tv.
they also said internet is full of pedophiles
.....
.....What....the.....hell.....
When in korea~
Do the world a favour and die already. What a fucking couple of retards.
Korean's and their MMOs
if u can't take care of a baby, don't make one.
프리우스 온라인의 아니마...
그 커플들이 한 게임이 이거란 소린가
What's worse is how many other cases of the same kind of thing happening. It's just stupid. I've recovered from a mild MMO obsession, but the things I neglected were way less important than a baby....(Stuff like sleep and school for a while...)
Only in China/Korea.......and maybe Japan.....and sometimes in the US....
they could try tamagotchi
They are seriously fucked up. But I must admit I'm curious as to how the hell they collected money to play MMOs all day long without having a fucking job.
this is why I quit MMOs
they are a tool to render the user as brainless sheep
I haven't tried drugs, because people warned me - they're bad to your health and very addicting.
Unfortunately, no one warned me about MMOs...
MMOs should be all destroyed next year
and now the virtual baby will die too ;_;
I feel pain in my chest right now just thinking how the baby suffered.
Not amazed, they are korean.
On another starving news:
Aren't MMO plagued by people who have no real social life in the first place?, these were a couple and they actually had SEX!, this is justo soooo wicked :/
And I won't mention anything about the dead of a baby because of the STUPIDNESS of it's parents because I'll just get mad and we all know it's far wrong.
Thank goodness I'm not married and don't have kids!
Thank goodness I will stay single till death!
This is sick
How many people have died because of WoW already?
So let me get this straight. They couldn't handle the reality of raising a baby... so they spent all their time online... raising a baby?
If they hadn't been arrested for criminal negligence, they should have been arrested for sheer, single minded idiocy.
Japan is gonna take this as an opportunity to bash Koreans...again.
and in this week's sign of the apocolypse.....
"The couple, a 41-year-old-man and a 25-year-old woman, lived near Seoul."
lol 41 and he can still play 12 hour each time ???
I hate MMO before, and i still hate them now :))
Gaming WIN!
It is easy to get swept up in the lure of the MMO. I doubt they intentionally let their child starve but more as in they fed it like pet. once a day with whatever they had.
This is what people do, they find a way to escape their situation that is less than optimal.
You can't say it's murder because they continued to feed and check on the child and it wasn't intentional. Neglectful manslaughter maybe.
This reminded me of something I was discussing with a friend. We were talking about a fair way to give tests to determine if you're competent enough to raise a child. We both agreed that inconveniencing parents was worth it if it helped stop stuff like this from happening.
Now a word form my evil side:
Once you get a "Prius online", you can't stop it.
Seems like they started playing because they didn't have jobs and the baby was born prematurely anyways so... they couldn't have fed the baby too much longer before they ran out of funds.
Hope this doesn't turn into another "See how evil video games are" event starter
Happens far too often imo. What are people like that thinking?
That's the problem... they don't think.
Dunno...
My parents are starting to become like them, they're stuck playing with those Facebook planting and cafe management games. I'm getting annoyed with it.
Sometimes they forget to make us dinner...
I'm get starved!!!
Make a dinner yourself. And if it turns out bad, that's even better - just make your parents eat it. That'll refresh their memory and love for cooking a lot.
Should take them to Dr. Phil.
maybe they are waiting for them to grow lol
Are you friended to your parents on FB? Don't post here, post there and they'll jump up from their seats and make dinner fast! All their FB buds hearing about a poor neglected daughter?! ~_~, sniff.. boohoo! ;)
Happens far too often? You mean this isn't the first child to starve to death because of an online game? Are you implying this is the sign of an impending epidemic? I am sure neglect happens all the time, but neglect that mirrors this scenario? Doubt it.
Back when EverQuest was popular there were plenty of cases of child neglect due to the addiction. Such as some lady(I think) leaving her kids in the car in summer to go play. These are still not common cases but it happen far too frequently for how horrible the situation is and how disconnected that type of person is from reality.
maybe they got too many quests and forgotten about the baby
They aren't.
