Captain Graf was not relieved for 'drag-racing' with the Mccain - in fact, the Navy's Inspector General's report specifically disproven that charge. That part of the report has a 21-year Navy veteran who served on Cowpens saying the exact opposite, and the CO of Mccain said essentially the same thing.

Graf was relieved of command because, frankly, she was a terrible officer, which led to a breakdown in the chain of command on the Cowpens. Over half of her senior officers on the Cowpens actually gave written testimony against her, even though the IG did not ask them for it - the IG report even specifically mention it. She seems to have been a terrible leader, commander, and manager, which makes her unfit for command of a ship, or for that matter, for becoming admiral. She was not kicked out of the service, but the chances she will ever command another ship (She commanded both the Cowpens and the destroyer Winston S. Churchill before the cruiser.) or becoming an admiral are nil. That is just one of 8 charges the IG investigated, of which they substantiated 5 of them.

Before anyone cries 'sexism', let me mention that Graf is one of six (6) ship COs in the Navy to have been relieved of their command in the last year alone. It is usually not so dramatic, though. And given that there were complaints against her as far back as the early 90s, sexism certainly did not hurt her career advancement (She is about average for any officer in the Navy at this point in their career - given there are less than 300 ships in the Navy and she was not qualified to command a good portion of them - namely submarines and carriers - commanding 2 ships before going on to the Pentagon staff was actually pretty good.).

It *is* Navy tradition. The Nimitz and the Enterprise raced way back when. IIRC, the Big E won... they were doing close to 40 knots (carriers are pretty fast).

Lol wow, when I was in the navy, based in Yokosuka. DD985 uss cushing was my ship (now decommissioned), we raced the mccain all the time!! WTF is this shit? lol. We also ran over 2 whales while I was stationed there. Nobody gave a damn lol, they just went "Heck yeah!" Who are these sissy sailors that are turning in their captain for a long old tradition?!
