An elementary school set to open in 2011 has made the unusual choice of naming itself after a popular loli eroge maker, Sakuranbo Elementary School.
The brand’s name is 私立さくらんぼ小学校 / Shiritsu Sakuranbo Shougakkou, “Private Cherry Elementary School.” It has been publishing loli eroge since 2002, including such classics as “Imouto Pet” and “My Wife is a — Schooler.”
Yamagata prefecture’s newest school, さくらんぼ小学校 / Sakuranbo Shougakkou, is set to open in April 2011.
Anyone searching for the name of the school in Japanese will be greeted by search results dominated by helpful loli eroge related links. The brand’s Wikipedia page carefully stresses that there is no connection between the school and the brand. The school itself does not yet have any online presence.
Presumably those involved with the naming were either great fans of the brand, or else never bothered to check what occupied the top slot in Google. They can perhaps be forgiven for not being aware of the unfortunate nuance the name carries when translated into English.
A mother asked about the school’s opening commented “It’s a cute name, it’s nice for it to have an affectionate name like that.”
For those wondering about a possible alternative origin of the naming choice, Yamagata prefecture’s Higashine City, the location of the school, is the nation’s number one producer of cherries with an annual output of 4,000 tons.

sakuranbo just means "cherry" and cherries are the main product of Yamagata prefecture (I've spent a while there). there are already a ton of "sakuranbo XYZ" everywhere there. nothing to see here guys, move along.
