Regardless, it's awfully interesting to see how even someone without experience can get quite far with a few pointers. (I'd be happy to assist her..)
This is mainly because the parts are so designed that they won't fit where they are not supposed to, usually. You can't plug in a PCIe video card into a PCI or AGP slot, nor you can plug in a PCI card into a PCIe slot. Power supply connectors only go in one way and so on.
OTOH, with old, AT power supplies there was a problem. The power was supplied by two one line connectors, however, you could easily swap them around and end up frying the motherboard.
Lucky for her it wasn't a proprietary (Dell,Compaq) Mobo and a Generic PSU and vice-versa
