Bleach Ripped Off by American Comic Artist Nick Simmons

Bleach fans have been outraged to learn that the comic has apparently been the subject of shameless plagiarism in the American comic book “Incarnate” by Nick Simmons.

Nick Simmons, whose main claim to fame is being the son of elderly washed up celebrity Gene Simmons, has attempted to launch a career as comic book artist with the release of his undead action comic “Incarnate,” but it seems the whole process was either too difficult or too much work, for readers soon spotted some rather striking similarities between his work and Bleach:

Leaving aside the obvious ethical bankruptcy and legal suicide inherent in such actions, it seems incredible that anyone would think nobody would notice, particularly with a blockbuster manga like Bleach.

The “artist” apparently doesn’t restrict himself to Bleach, with other artists also suffering the same fate:

Simmons is also alleged to be freely helping himself to scenes from Hellsing, Vampire Hunter D, NANA, Dogs, and others. He has yet to offer any comment on the matter.

There are currently some entertaining efforts to bring the wrath of Shueisha and VIZ (who hold the US rights to Bleach) down on both author and publisher; it seems his career as comic book writer may be a short lived one indeed.

    Can't blame that simmons guy.

Bleach has nice art and originality, i'm surprised no one had plagiarized it until now.

Though this ain't a good thing, to future-artist-mangakas out there >_>

His Artistic career is probably over now. It's one thing to use similar characters, but stealing poses is just lazy.

"Bleach has nice art and originality"

Please. You call parallel lines, ink spillage, and lack of backgrounds nice art? Also, Kubo is quite guilty of plagiarism himself. The ending of the Ichigo/Ulquiorra fight was almost exactly like the Yusuke/Sensui fight in YuYu Hakusho.

He couldn't even copy Bleach correctly. His artwork is all over the place and inconsistent. He's like a modern Rob Liefeld.

    @ "Kubo copied YuYuHakusho"
Firstly, this was a single fight scene,
whereas apparantly this guy has copied ad infinitum and from multiple sources.

so yeah, the degree of plagarism is vastly different.

not that im sayin Kubo should plagarise.

Yeah, Bleach is an otherwise original series about a tough delinquent forced into a temp job as an agent for the afterlife, where he's partnered with some (mostly useless) chick in a kimono who uses a fake body when she needs to interact with other humans. And in the second movie gets a mcguffin gem pulled out by a villain. But it's just one fight scene!

Still, at least Bleach sticks to being conceptually unoriginal instead of copying so many panels.

and the guy who did YuYu Hakusho copied off of Dragon Ball. Isn't it just the "idea" of the world that was used for bleach. I watched both series and the big differences between bleach uses "swords" and yuyu hakusho uses "techniques" to power up.

I mean for crying out loud if Kubo is plagarising then the whole freaking comic industry is plagarising with super heroes from all different companies. I mean how many different superman-like, batman-like & wonder woman-like stories till we say it's plagarism or its' not plagarism?

And how is deviantart the reason? Shouldn't we be complaining about the root of the problem? D: That being, people are copying each others work in the manga industry deliberately and if it's popular no one will say anything

they all copied dragon ball Z. there is a bad guy who is unbeatable. the good guy gets tougher and beats him. lol. this kinda pokes fun at the joker claiming that the bleach maker copied the yuyu hakusho creator. basically if a fight is similar, on a comic book page, chances are that is just how they envisioned the fight. *coincidence. if you steal character concepts, poses, and follow through the scene screen by screen, copying and pasting, that is more like ripping off.

You do realize that the moderators of DA have been known to use stolen materials as well right? Not to mention they never ban people who conduct art theft even if it has been blatantly proven to be stolen. Sometimes they won't even investigate a report of an art theft and claim the report as false. I have dealt with DA moderators more than enough to know they're nothing but hypocrites.

I never said "All DA artists steal!", they're just the majority.

I've been on DA for years. They made tracing perfectly fine by their rules. That is theft.

The only ways to get banned are to say 'mean things' about the admins, Say a few words to a popular artist that don't amount to 'Oh, you're AWESOME!', or post porn.

In the anime sections of DA there is so much copied trash that the few of us that DO draw our own work from scratch have started calling it "Deviant Trace" because you go into any anime based gallery and you're looking at 3/4th a page of poorly traced SHIT.

Another thing, I didn't blame his stealing on DA, I said he'd fit right in. Don't be a dick and assume that I believe DA is the source of the issue. HE chose to steal. HE is the one that published the stolen work. DA is just a place where he'll find kindred spirits.

And, lastly, stupidity is no excuse.

There are very good fanartists at DA. They just have a hard time taking off because of the stupid general attitude of "you're not japanese = your doujin is shit". Like drawing manga was some kind of genetic trait, what a load of bullshit.

    I totally agree!

But at the same time, I get really annoyed when non-Japanese just copy the style and ignore the culture behind it. That, I believe, gives anime and manga an edge over other comics and shows.

I'm intrigued by what you mean by "culture" when Japanese comics are known to be historically based off of Western(and especially Disney) art styles. So, it's a mix of American and Japanese culture coming together right?
If you're talking about how manga has katana and kimono I fail to see how that makes it different from other comics/animation that also use cultural imagery.

    Comment by Anonymous
    12:34 27/03/2010 # ! Neutral (0)

The person might be refering to "culture" as in character development, sketching. Although it was first influenced by Disney, as the year progresses, the characters progresses, become more and more human. Even the monsters, you can't really call them monsters anymore, additionally, you get to sympathize with the bad guys (am so reluctant to use this word because there really is no bad guys (people led astray is a better term).
However, American comics are detached, not cohesive, it doesn't have a culture of it's own. Family guy, Simpsons, and all those marvel comics are different from each other. Manga, anime on the other hand, the overall drawing style remain the same, just that some looks more expressive (nyan! koi, Hatenko Yugi, Fullmetal panic), others looks more human styled (moyashimon, mushishi), or CG enhanced(aquarion),and so on. However, despite that, they have complex character development. It's like the characters are alive. It's like what's fiction and non-fic is as thin as paper. If let's say you are watching magic themed anime, take out the magic and you are left with the core. Once, people start observing the core, they might realize that it does have a culture of it's own. It's also written a book once, where, anime, manga are reflective of real life japan. Not that in japan there are vampires running lose. It's just that if you read manga and watch anime, you get a feel of Japan. I've only been to Japan for 1 week and it feels like 3 days, and the funny thing, is that the scenery is somewhat nostalgic. Funny right?

    Comment by Anonymous
    13:30 27/03/2010 # ! Neutral (0)

there's such a thing called lack of talent. it's people who think that they have talent and are overly confident however, when they are pointed out by people, their shortcoming (makes you human), they become defensive, refuse to improve, and continue doing useless things. They don't seek references, if they seek for reference, they take it block out, instead of experimenting with it. Since, this world has come a long way, it is becoming harder to create something that is purely original. So how does one define what is copied and what is real? the plot, the drawings, the character development. If a fight scene is similar to another series, is the character development similar? why are the characters fighting in the first place? is the characters drawn the same? what is the motive for the fight and so on. So technically, it is not wrong to copy others directly, per drawing, per word, per panel, but once you said oh it's mine, now that's plain wrong even though it's sewn together from different parts.
So yeah lack of talent do exists. For example "Shao An" (cooking master boy). He's an example of someone who has no talent. Because in the end, although he was able to attain some kind of new technique, he was going around in circles because he was ignorant to details. The same with copying. You can copy but if you are ignorant of the details, it's just going to be the cheap version of the whole gimmick.
