Final Fantasy XIII Xbox 360 “18GB” vs PS3 “38GB”

chibi-lightning-by-karin.jpg

The Xbox 360 port of Final Fantasy XIII has been confirmed as being almost half the size of the PS3 version, coming in at 18GB on 3 DVDs versus 38GB on one BD, far smaller than expected.

The comparison comes by way of review copy:

Disc 1: 5.9GB
Disc 2: 5.8GB
Disc 3: 6.6GB

Total: 18.3GB

Xbox owners will likely be hoping careful movie compression will limit the difference, but obtaining over 50% compression without a significant loss in movie quality is not very likely.

More problematically, preliminary reports are already showing actual in-game graphics have suffered on the Xbox 360, far from reassuring news for what was supposed to be an “absolutely identical” port.

Discs would probably be for a single use as you go through the game. One for "gameplay", the next purely for video. "Yay, almost time to swap dis- RRoD..."
Another FF13 article just reminds me: Vanille doujins nao.

Maybe it just proves how ridiculously complex the PS3 coding version for the game is?

(remember people - FFXIII was initially supposed to be made for PS2.)

Maybe it just proves how ridiculously is the quality of the videos of the Blue ray compared to a "normal" dvd. Or a normal dvd movie is better than a BD one, cause it have less gigs.

This article is wrong. I have all 3 FF13 DVD's and they weight in at about 23 gigs. Want proof? Go find the iso files for FF13 for the xbox. No matter where you find it or download it, its over 20 gigs.

And yeah, after playing the game on the 360, the graphics are better than any other game I have ever played. But all this bickering about graphics is stupid because THE GAME SUCKS BEYOND belief. Even if the graphics were way better (which is silly because they are already awesome) you'd get more fun using the DVD's as frisbee's than actually using them to play the game.

They should have made it into a 24 CD box set, releasing each CD slowly, along the same time line it takes to release each anime DVD.

As a bonus feature you get to see the map of FF13 when you line all 24 cd casings side by side when you have finished the collection.

I have owned and played the PS3 version.

It could be interesting, but expensive too.
I hope they make an ocidental version of the PS3 Lightning Edition, i want to play the game, despite the bad reviews, i want to go more for the story and graphics.

So... in the PS3 Enix said that even if the story was boring and the game more straight than a ruler, it had rocking graphics and amazing videos... in the Xbox they are saying the graphics are not that amazing and the videos will lack the "holy crap that's good" factor?... jesus christ, really, I was going to post a comment like "then the FFXIII for the Xbox 360 is more useful as a cupholder or a frisbee for my dog" but this fact is just so sad... and I kind of feel pity for the people that made the game, I mean, their names on the credits are like a tribute to epic fail that'll last forever and haunt them on their nightmares.

Yeah... "explore" ... People were complaining that it wasn't possible to fly/walk around on a worldmap anymore. FFX was a good game, but it wasn't as good as any of the previous PSX Games, don't even want to mention FF6 on the SFC/SNES. lol

From a developer or plot standpoint:
The game is only Linear until the end being you are running from Cocoon. Can't really go around in towns and cities and shop and explore when there is a militaristic people that view you as danger there. Also I'm sure they wouldn't want to have the Purge happen to them as well. So for the time being you are on the run until most of it is dealt with. The PSI-OP were right on their tail the entire time. As you can see by every time they stopped for a moment to breathe, Low and behold PSI-OP catches up to assassinate them.

I agree that FFX killed Final Fantasy, in fact I think it killed the whole jrpg genre. It's a horrible on-rails piece of shit with barely any game world content to speak of (remember it had like 2 fully explorable towns), and anyone who likes it should be fed to wild bears.

I guess you are one of those who loved ff9, because it reminds you of the classics snes ff.I loved FFX and hated FF9 (a mini-monkey for main character?no man, no), and i guess this is true for must people, you love one or the other, but not the two at the same time. But i still respect FF9 because it was made for the old school fans, and thats okay in my book, but saying that FFX killed Final fantasy? Thats just make me want to see wild bears look at you and thinking "i'm going to turn you into my poo"

I suppose it's safe to assume with the rise of hate in superiority differences between the two versions released; that this game will reach the same level of infamy that the PS3 Bayonetta port did.
However, despite the poor port on Sega's behalf - Bayonetta was still awesome. FFXIII - no matter the console - will still be a long marathon. At the very least it's not a broken game like Tales of Disgrac...I mean Tales of Graces.

I'm not judging something I haven't played. I properly imported the title only to find myself dragging my feet to finish the game. You'll see when you get to play the game just how much of a chore it is to complete the story up to Gran Pulse. Only when you're given the freedom to explore and take-up side-quests does FFXIII become enjoyable.

It reflects really poorly on the 360, but it's totally the dev's fault here. Unfortunately, that won't stop people from saying that the 360 sucks because FFXIII looks better on the PS3.

SPOILER ALERT: Square-Enix and Sony planned this from the start.

Audio, video, and textures are always the biggest things when uncompressed. They're the obvious targets for cutting size quickly.

    @00:21
Textures are limited by the vram unit of the Console anyways. If you think the BluRay is packed with HIGH quality textures, then you're dead wrong. The vram Unit of the PS3 or 360 can't handle High res textures. Just look at the Half Life² Cinematic Mod. The best PC is just enough to handle them Photorealistic textures and they dont take up 40GB >_>

I agree with the Audio and Video part though. My guess is, that the Videos for the PS3 version are FullHD like 1080i and the 360 is running only 720i. I think the PS3 version has uncompressed audio as well...

I would ussually say that this is the devs fault too, but it wasn't meant for the 360. It's a port; it's not going to be as good. I also don't have any reason to believe that SQEnix and Sony planned this. That would make not sense. SqEnix wants to make money, and they're not going to get it from a bad product.

What really makes you think is how much did the 360 port play apart on the "linearness of the PS3" version. I mean they had to cut half of the data from the 360 version how where they going to add towns and make it more "massive" without just making the 360 version look like complete and udder shit, even more so then it is. Some might say oh the PS3 version was done then they ported it, but its still food for thought.
