The anime market’s verdict is that Nadeko anime Bakemonogatari is almost twice as good as feeble moe-blob anime K-ON!
The sales of the two anime compared:
K-ON! BD & DVD Sales Totals:
01 – 51,192
02 – 43,156
03 – 40,029
04 – 37,934
05 – 36,682
06 – 37,566
07 – 42,039
Average: 41,600
Bakemonogatari BD & DVD Sales Totals:
01 – 79,228
02 – 73,071
03 – 69,475
04 – 74,348
Average: 74,030
2 volumes of Bakemonogatari are yet to be released, and surprisingly it continues to sell hundreds of copies a week, so it seems likely to become even better than K-ON! in future.

And people aren't spending thousands of yen on staplers as they do with guitars.
But I'm sure there are still Otaku out there trying to get every piece of stationary that falls from Senjougahara's skirt.
Or rather get in her skirt.....
If they can avoid getting their Johnnies stapled...
If the blu-ray weren't $60 per volume, I'd buy'em in a heartbeat. Has it been licensed in the US yet?
No it hasn't :(
I really hope Bakemono gets licensed in Australia. There is little to no chance but one can dream. I simply must have it in my collection.
Worse comes to worse I can import from America if they get it I guess.
With the state of censorship going on particularily in regards to CP, no... unless they censor the whole of the Nadeko Arc, which the Blu-ray/DVD versions had some very "questionable" scenes.
SZS did get licensed in the US by Media Blasters not long ago finally... which marks the first SHAFT show to be licensed since Negima... so cross your fingers for Bake to.
For Australia though, fat chance. Madman is slow and sucks... I mean they only recently announced that Naruto Shippuden was to be licensed...
join the anti moe movement,
its time some fucking substance was brought back into anime,
anime needs to be more than schoolgirls with squeeky voices groping each other.
fuck moe
I dunno if such data would necessarily qualify Bakemonogatari as "better", much less allow us to theorize that it's exactly *twice* as good.
But it's certainly twice as profitable.
i'd like to buy both. Bakemonogatari because of its nice story and character development, and K-on because it is an anime where you can just chill, and dont have to think to much about it
But germany sucks really hard if you want to buy animes here, because it tages ages, better said centuries until something like that would get licensed here <_<
Both are really good IMO
I love both of them for different reasons
but it's just my opinion, some will always hate things for no reason like k-on haters will say it's a bad show and etc. while bakemonogatari haters will say almost the same things but about bakemonogatari.
However others *like me* will just enjoy what they like and what they judge that's good and don't give a f#@k to what other people think.
pseudo, your ass
It´s another way to make an anime, if you can´t understand go to cry with your monday´s dakimakura
It sells because its superb... Anyone can wait and download the blu ray rips
Opinion is opinion
This article wont change it xD
Well, at last some sense among japanese anime watchers. K-on is a shallow series in the sense that it relies on a single aspect (moé), compared to bakemonogatari, which is more varied (moé/comedy/drama/fantasy...)
looks like i have to cave in and finish this show. shaft needs to finish it first though but it doesn't look like that's likely anytime soon.
i havent see the anime of bakemonogatari, i just read the 1st vn of it. But maybe eva 2.0 bluray will surpass bakemonogatari in selling numbers when it comes out. The only things i know for sure that will sell massively this year is mahoutsukai no yoru and starcraft 2.
This article's name sounds so wrong.
Just because something makes a lot of money doesn't mean it's good or better.
It's just that in this case it's true.
no, its K-on!!
My question? When the FUCK are they going to release Bakemonogatari episodes 14 & 15? They streamed episode 13 only a matter of weeks after the last TV episode aired, but it's been months now!
Still no decent subbing group doing the DVD version
(third time I had to say this since it keeps getting deleted for some reason)
All I want is just a Hitagi and Nadeko figure... sad, my monthly rent is higher than my salary lol
Why can't there be an awesome storyline with awesome bassist girls? Honestly? *not really an anime fan/still wondering*
I friggin hate Bakemonogatari. An atrocious affront towards the actual animation of things in an animation.
As a novel, it's interesting, but that's that. Shaft is on an annoying-level for me nowadays.
Couldn't agree more.
And no, I don't like K-ON either.
You got K-ON my Senjougahara!
At least K-on was finished when it aired. The reason why so many people are buying the Bake DVD is because they want to see the show in a finished state. Bring on the Moe!!!!
So where on earth are the last few episodes? I am pretty sure that with the amount of DVD sold, Shaft shouldn't have any problem hiring more staff.
to each thier own. its useless to argue which anime was better. i liked K-ON! and i liked Bakemonogatari, yet, there may be people who didn't like either. sometimes i feel like watching a good story, and sometimes i like something a bit less story heavy. having seen over 160 series, i've seen bad anime, some with just awful endings, but i feel it's best to just pick up and move on to the next anime on yur 'to do' list and hope it's better.
Fuck yeah!, in your face bitches.
Slice of Life stories like K-on are still the best imho.

APRIL!!!
FUCK YEAH!
And people say K-on isn't a big deal.
Bakemonogatari has an interesting storyline, and even though some would say it goes to the typical harem type of show, you can't just resist the natural charm of each character in the story.
BTW when we talk about Nadeko, I'd like to say that I li-HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHNNNNNGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHH
It's not the best show in history but-
HHHHHHHHNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNGGGHH~
Nice attempt on making K-On! and moe look bad.
Like it or not though, it's still second and has bigger numbers than lots of other quality non moe animes...
Not to mention the differences on straight to DVD release versus modified (read improved) version...
I kinda feel sad for all those who despise moe anime, because it'll keep running strong for quite sometime.
Fortunately, I'm not among you.
K-On!! and Strike Witches Season 2 FTW!
Also gladly watching Hidamari Sketch Hoshimittsu
I would not call Strike Witches moeblob as is the case with K-On. Strike Witches does not have generic stereotype girls in a generic stereotype setting. It's actually got something different and unique along with a plot no matter how retarded that plot was at times.
Don't start lopping anime with actual plot and characters in with the likes of K-On.
its because Bakemonogatari came out with a shitload of scenes that were missing so alot of people wants to get their hands on a completed ones.
Both series like to make their fans wait,ONA and 2nd season in tandem...
Heh, it seems quality and depth still win in front of dubious depictions of schoolgirls with unreasonable antics.
That's because Bakemonogatari has TWO factors pulling it to the top: Moe, and the key factor, an interesting storyline.
K-ON only has the former.
Hitagi Senjougahara FTW!
Hitagi + Nadeko + Neko-Tsubasa + Shinobu + that other girl >>>>>>> Keion-bu
Also, I have heard people who don't like K-ON, but I have never heard anyone who don't like Bakemonogatari..
@i like pandas 01:25
Props to Bakemonogatari for interesting characters, interesting character interactions, and an interesting storyline.
I'll buy DVDs of that (as soon as they get to the U.S.).
I've also watched Lucky Star, Kannagi, Kei-On! -- once.
They're like fluffy little Mc-nuggets, kinda tasty, but not filling or satisfying, nor worth watching more than once.
Bakemonogatari doesnt have THAT much moe
but I'd say Bakemonogatari has a very nice balance between moe and storyline
Bakemonogatari had a storyline? It was a freaking episodic anime. Senjogahara's character was the only thing that developed, and even that was way too incoherent and way too simplified for something that aims at being a convincing psychological drama.
Actually Bakemono used the basic arc format so you had key focuses on particular girls during their arcs, it was not episodic. Most of their development occurred through their arc because you hardly saw them outside of it except for cases like Senjougahara and Tsubasa who were more frequent female lead characters along with of course Araragi as male lead.
I am unsure of what anime you were watching if you felt that people did not develop or if you thought it was a psychological drama. Neither of these were the case.
Well it's episodic but does have some continuing plot points. If it was truly episodic then most of the Araragi's harem wouldn't be showing up in multiple arcs. The storyline is pretty much Arararagi(oops I stuttered) growing up, similar to FLCL. A perfect example is the Nadeko snake arc where he learned that he can't always save everybody or the Kanbaru arc where not everybody wants to be saved. There is also a major plot point at the end of the Cat arc which changes the dynamics as well. So yes it does have a storyline but it is more centered around characters and dialogue.
@Anon 02:51: Bakemonogatari doesn't "aim at being a psychological drama". I'd like to know just which show you were watching.
@i like pandas
"That's because Bakemonogatari has TWO factors pulling it to the top: Moe, and the key factor, an interesting storyline."
What part of bakemonogatari is moe? Are you one of those people that shout "moe! moe!" at everything?
Nadeko and Mayoi stick out(the OPs. Oh god the OPs). However the anime overall not really moe.
Ding! We have a winner. You also forgot interesting characters that evolve and a generally more interesting universe.
Wow just in time when I had a weird dream a while ago...
Senjougahara washing my back...
I know it's just a dream...
Anyway, I want a season 2!!! NAO!!!
Senjougahara? Do you mean Hitagi or her father? :D
His rough hands then slowly glided over your chest, and slowly dropped towards your groin, you then hear him say,
"Yaranaika?"
ichiro's avatar slowly cried...
The girl, her father didn't show up.
It was only quick, I woke up after that scene...
LOOL
you sure it wasn't her dad? the one with his rough hands scrubbing ur back and...?
Yeah sure.
BAKE FWD!
and they showing the incomplete version on tv :)
The poor stream watchers and fansub lovers get the shafted version, while the proper dvd/bd buyers get the full version. Sounds reasonable?
Yeah I think incomplete versions have an effect on DVD sales. The TV version I watched was basically eyecancer.
THE THRUTH.
[Cruise controll over]
We all love how Artafact makes It sound dirty but true.
OKAY! ENOUGH!
MIO AND HITAGI BOTH WIN! enuf said
Hitagi vs Mio?
Fearless and phobia?
You gotta be kidding me.
Let's try:
Hitagi Senjogahara is a well developed, multi-dimensional, and unique character. She draws the audience with both her aesthetic appeal as well as her enigmatic personality.
Mio is a stereotype -> cute shy girl.
another thing about the incomplete version with Bakemonogatari, at least for the TV versions for myself, I kind of liked the... not really sure how to say it as I'm still braindead (25-26 hours of Mass Effect 2... was okay, wasn't great, wasn't bad either) this morning (afternoon, if you feel that 1pm isn't morning for some :P) but it was "intriguing?" it certainly kept my attention and the imagination that you were forced to use during those incomplete scenes kept at the very least me hooked.
of course you get the full service to the DVD version but for some of you guys out there you have to admit the TV version had its merit albeit incomplete
It's the Hitagi factor that drives the sales high.Hitagi is fearless while Mio is a girl with many phobia.
It was fine to me, I think its the fact that Bakemonogatari has more appeal to every one rather than the hardcore otaku like K-ON
what I am trying to say is Bakemonogatari > K-ON
in my opinion at least
The power of lolis!
Interesting Story, or Random Schoolgirl Band?
I think we know the winner, its just that Nadeko sealed the deal.
Bakemonogatari has one of the worst stories of any anime ever.
oh look someone who doesn't even know what is the worst about the story.
oh look a troll
0/10
One of the things that Anime fandom is plagued with is subjective comments such as these that offer no substantiation or qualification. At least put the words 'I feel that' inf ront of your sentence. For instance,
'I feel that Bakemonogatari has one of the worst stories of any anime ever.'
Fixed. At least this way, fans of the show will not feel bad for watching Bakemonogatari, but just hate on you instead.
And I suppose an anime like Lucky Star has a better story line?
Oh wait, Lucky Star has a story line?
fail again. lucky star is a gag anime. gag anime don't utilize storylines. instead, they take a fact and make something out of it.
before you bash anime, check the genre so you won't get hurt. -_-
are you high?
The problem is I can't really "relax" while watching Bakemonogatari, whereas K-ON is fairly relaxing. Sometimes you need to chill, and I'm willing to bet a lot of Japanese guys come home to K-On thinking the same thing.
Pretty much any half baked ecchi or moe will give you that relaxing feeling simply cause there is nothing of substance to follow. It does not make it a good anime.
If you want relaxing, you could always chill to a few episodes of Azumanga Daioh and feel your brain shutting down every time the camera focuses on Osaka =P
Bakemonogatari kills off people.
K-ON being a slice of life manga and with it's lack of "storyline" as some would call it, is what I like about it.
I Like that it's easy going and there's not too much drama in it, my life is shitty enough without worrying about other people's problems in fiction. People who don't have respect for this kind of genre obviously don't have as much experience with real life drama as those who think otherwise and appreciate it.
