The investigative prowess of 2ch is once again proven in locating the source of To Aru Majutsu no Index and To Aru Kagaku no Railgun’s Academy city – the city of Tama, in Kanagawa.
As with many anime these days, using real life locations is neither uncommon nor unheard of – fortunately for Railgun Japan’s modern city centres easily pass for futuristic metropolises, perhaps because frequently they are them.

I've heard rumours that all their tour guides speak in a monotone voice and look exactly the same.
yeah, and in the stores, you can buy up to 99 of whatever they're selling and you can sell just about anything you have regardless of the kind of store it is.
oh, and you dont have to worry about dying, just remember to save.
Not really. It's the same kind of rumor that all Chinese look the same etc.
No, I actually heard they looked EXACTLY the same.
Almost as if they were...
Then you believe that all Japanese tour guides have EXACTLY the same genes.
fukou da...
When did you last see a tour guide wearing an EM visor?
Not a tour guide but a school girl with a violin case...
That's where Misaka-imouto is based on..
The number of people in this thread who don't get jokes has reached critical mass. Run!
Nah, i'd rather stay and watch the explosion...o.o
all japanese and chinese looks the same duh!
No, I heard there were EXA- fuck it.
Watch the anime people.
like nurse joy or something
they all do look the same. its not a rumor, its true hahaha
All you human scums look the same.
I will never understand how Otaku look up these exact locations
Seriously, otaku can do anything if it relates to anime.
true that... true that boy.... anything...
I find it more impressive that the CG artists for railgun are able to still give the referenced images a lot of differences and completely different atmosphere.
Simple.
Over at 2ch, they have a GET thread. The (un)lucky person who first rolls doubles must embark on an epic journey across Japan until all locations of the anime in question are found.
When that person's mission is complete, they return to their dark basement and upload all the pictures before succumbing to sunlight exposure disease (leading killer of otakus fyi).
GET threads at 2ch are serious business.
I have just realized 2ch is nothing like 4chan. I'll just pack up that theory then and be on my way. Ta-ta.
2ch is not 2chan.
Why would it be surprising if they actually live in those places?
Isn't it kind of expected, though?
If otakus will even go on a pilgrimage to Spain, what makes you think they won't at least live there?
If you live there, it's probably not too difficult.
Maybe some of them actually live there?
Then it wouldn't be a surprise to recognize your own city.
Great, stalkers
The otaku's will hunt the place down lol!
and yeah i am amazed.... niCe!
I am amazed... if only animes could get them out of their rooms!!!!
It's called Comiket
And practically every large scale convention
Apparently this one did?
Lucky Star made thousands of people visiting the Washinomiya Shrine...
Im going there
it's tokyo not kanagawa
So if I go there and try really hard, I'll end up in the Imaginary zone where I can see Biri Biri right!?
*sigh
too bad we r all Level ZERO.
we are all Saten
Couldn't you have picked another level zero. Now I have a boner for all of you.
Okay, I have to admit that I laughed. xD
This means I have to run around randomly flipping up skirts, too?
Hmm, fine with me. ^^
No, we are not level 0. IIRC, you needed to go through some process to even get a level.
Thus, as we neither have a level nor are magic, the only conclusion is that we are Touma's mom. Enjoy your vagina.
Where are the wind turbines? I hear they use electricity to power them...
Did someone actually wait for the train to be in the right position before actually snapping the picture? o.O
Such dedication...
I've always been rather disappointed with this idea of taking photos of places and using them as background in anime. If it makes sense to do it (like the anime is actually set in that city/area) then sure that's fine, it adds to the realism. But if the area is meant to be one of fantasy then its just plain lazy to go take snapshots and use that (exact or near exact to how you photographed it) for your layout and background design.
Though it does get around the problem of people who know things like civil engineering looking at your show and going "haha, a city would never be laid out like that!"
sure took them a long while to identify this one
More like the author of this article didn't care posting about this until Railgun.
that's it, I'm moving.
It explains how so many anime shows looked so cool because the art work was really detailed. Now we find out they were all traced and slightly altered photographs of real pictures. One anime recently even looked like it used photos of the skyline of Tokyo DannyChoo put up on his webpage about the time he went to the top of the highest building tower in Japan. With the step railings - not that set but the ones from the water across the water. Right around that time.
