The Tokyo International Anime Fair, scheduled to take place the end of March at the Tokyo Big Sight, has announced the winners of their TAF 2010 Anime Awards.
August 2009’s Summer Wars film was especially well represented, taking a number of awards, including the top Anime of the Year prize, with K-ON! and Higashi no Eden (or Eden of the East) sharing the top ranking for TV anime.
Animation of The Year – Summer Wars
Summer Wars has (of course) only been released in Japan, and strangely enough, Korea, so it’s not nearly as well known internationally as some of the other names listed below.
TV Category Excellence Award – TIE – K-ON! / Higashi no Eden
The website makes no particular mention of a tie, but instead lists the award twice, each one giving the award to these two well-known TV series.
OVA Category Excellence Award – Eve no Jikan (Time of Eve)
Eve no Jikan was an interesting project, combining 2D animation with a 3D background and being streamed online instead of being televised or sold as on OVA.
Foreign Theatrical Category Excellence Award – Wall-E
This category was more or less to be expected…
Domestic Theatrical Category Excellence Award – Summer Wars
Obviously, taking the top overall award did not disqualify Summer Wars from taking this award as well, which otherwise would most likely have gone to Evangelion 2.0 as a runner up.
Director Award – 細田 守 / Mamoru Hosoda (Summer Wars)
Hosoda is probably better known internationally for also being the director of the excellent Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo (The Girl Who Leapt Through Time.)
Original Work Award – 細田 守 / Mamoru Hosoda (Summer Wars)
This award would normally be given to the original creator of a story (such as a light novel’s original author), but here it given again to Summer War’s director, presumably for his role in developing the story in addition to the screenwriter, who instead received the award below…
Screenplay Award – 奥寺 佐渡子 / Satoko Okudera (Summer Wars)
Fine Arts Award – 武重 洋二 / Youji Takeshige (Summer Wars)
In case you’re wondering what this award is for, Takeshige was the Art Director for Summer Wars.
Character Design Award – 貞本 義行 / Yoshiyuki Sadamoto
Sadamoto is of course eternally famous for being the character designer for Evangelion, as well as being one of Gainax’s founding members.
Seiyuu Award – 神谷 浩史 / Hiroshi Kamiya (Bakemonogatari)
Kamiya performed the male lead role of Koyomi Araragi in Bakemonogatari, but is perhaps even more widely known as Itoshiki Nozomu of Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei.
Music Award – 鷺巣 詩郎 / Shirou Sagisu (Evangelion 2.0)
Sagisu has been Evangelion’s main musical composer since the original TV series, and given the amount of his original 1995 music is used in the latest Eva movies this award must also be in recognition of the quality of Eva’s well-known soundtracks.
The Tokyo International Anime Fair opens on March 25, but will only be open to the general public from the the 27th to the 28th.
More information on the event can be found at the official English website, with the awards viewable here.

Maybe I should check out Summer Wars. So far the only thing I know about it is that these a cute tanlined shota in it. I know that from the Shota hentai Doujinshi that parody the movie.
The only copy available right now is hard-subbed in Korean.
You can get a English soft-sub to lay over it but it's your choice, didn't spoil it for me.
that sucks, and I was just about to look for eng hard sub :<
summer wars doens't deserve so much praise either way, it's not really good
@Friend
>hard sub
I think I puked a little in my mouth
@Anon
Then again, think of all the movies that win awards over here. A lot of them may be considered mediocre or boring to normal people but "special" to movie critiques.
That said, I haven't seen Summer Wars yet, so I don't know if this is the case.
Summer wars wasn't that good.
It was ok but not good by any means.
you never get a chance to connect with the characters. If you want to see a good newer movie watch "The Girl Who Leapt Through Time" Much better than summer wars.
Can't agree on that. Summer Wars was really nice and heart-warming for me.
If you are trying to say that TokiKake is newer than Summer Wars, then I think you have some wires crossed. For one, TokiKake came out 4 years ago, Summer Wars just came out last Summer. Also, the two movies are made by the same guy.
It's fine if you didn't like it, and TokiKake is a great recommendation.
@2:55
Anon meant in general it's a (relatively) new movie that doesn't suck.
I watched Summer Wars and it was pretty good. The Korean Subs are annoying in the beginning, but afterward it's perfectly fine.
Wall-E?
I guess Pixar's Up hasn't floated off American ground much.
Eve no jikan and Higashi no eden sure, but K-on?!?!
K-ON!??!?!
How to make a "top list" worthless with 1 listing...?
I have never gone on any anime fairs...I can't call myself an otaku.
This is most likely the equivalent of the Oscars.
I'd doubt most of the people here have been to the Oscars presentation, so I don't think it's something you need to worry your "otaku"-dom over.
To begin with, calling yourself an "otaku" is rather ridiculous.
I'm sure the Oscars only costs 1000 yen for entry as well, 800 if you buy in advance!
Plus plane tickets, hotel fees, meals, etc. etc. etc.
My point was that an event with a ridiculously low entry fee is obviously not the equivalent to the Oscars.
Regardless, it comes at a rather high premium for people not in the country.
Also, for anime, it may as well be the Oscars equivalent.
Unless there is some other award that I'm not aware of.
Don't compare this shit to the Oscars.
It's just not the same no matter how much you want it to be
The Oscars is a high class event
------
K-ON won something? now that's, it is a nice anime but not worth any special awards in my opinion
SHUT UP K-ON HATER!
I think you're missing my point.
The Tokyo Anime Fair award is the single most prestigious award for TV/Theatrical anime in Japan.
The Oscars is the single most prestigious award for Western Film.
They're equivalent of eachother in that they're given to the best of an industry, regardless of how one might be much more lavish/classier/more internationally known than the other.
Also, K-ON! Really doesn't deserve this award.
The only reason by which I could see it getting it is because Kyo-ani did a good job animating it without any CHINAQUALITY going into it.
YEA. NARUTO SHOULD'VE WON. DATTEBAYO!
K-ON! is the biggest commercial success in a TV series so far. Yes yes... Bakemonogatari may have sold more DVD/Bluray but going up against the wide variety of merchandises spawned I ask you to think twice...
Back to the topic... I have no problem with K-ON! winning an award though what irks me is that Bakemonogatari should be up there. Dare I say a gruesome 3-way tie.

Yea but the Oscar is more global
lets be honest only anime and the japanese might consider looking at this
either way why would anyone pay to go see this, in the Oscars you have all the actors there, do voice actors go there or something?
Can be other way around, but ill give you sympathy anyway.
And you're right, I need to delete the word "otaku" in my head...*brings a chainsaw*
heard of the otaku elimination game?
You don't need to be an otaku to go there ^^
I don't see how Summer Wars being released in Korea is all that strange.
Both countries constantly share different forms of media with eachother. Korea with their K-Dramas and YONSAMAAAA<3, Japan with their Anime. And even after that, both sides are constantly taking up eachothers' pop music and idols like candy.
There's also more than just a few Korean/Japanese artists that have made their home in the other country. Most notably Lim Dal Young, who had originally been one of the top Manhwa artists in Korea for works like Zero but moved on to Japanese publication for Kurokami/Black God.
Regardless, glad to see Summer Wars and Eve no Jikan get recognition. Very.
I merely called it strange since it is still somewhat atypical.
Atypical?
How?
Simultaneous theatrical releases in Korean and Japan aren't that difficult because both countries typically forgo dubs for subs in order to expedite the localization process.
And in the business of animation, studios in both countries are working closely enough with eachother that it's not all that difficult to say that they may have had the Korean script for subtitles ready before any of the actual frame-by-frame animation was started.
Just curious.
In addition, there are whole Korean portions of many famous Japanese animation studios.
And vice-versa for Korean animation and both K and J dorama.
Winter Sonata's anime shocked me as it used the original Korean drama's voice actors and had Japanese subtitles, despite it being a Japanese animation.
I simply meant atypical to mean not typical, don't read too much into it please.
I never heard of a Japanese-Korean simultaneous release ever happen before, so I can't comment on that, but regarding animation production, Korean animation divisions of Japanese studios only really exist to save money. The Japanese animators generally do the key animation whilst the Korean division does the in-between animation. That's why for some anime you see long lists ,in the credits, of names of Korean animators who are paid worse than Japanese animators, whose wages are already crappy enough...
I don't know how close they work together, but do I recall someone in an interview asking a director from MADHOUSE, about a QUALITY show the Korean division was working on, called "The Boondocks." The director replied by saying he didn't even know the project existed...
There aren't many South Korean companies being requested to draw Japanese anime.
Korean animators are paid better than Japanese animators. Why? 90% Canadian and American cartoon series are still drawn, colored, and animated in South Korea. South Korea is still the best place for requesting American and Canadian cartoons at a better price and quality.
Japan used to be like that in the 80s but they aren't now.
I don't know if this an insult to say this in an anime-oriented website. There are tons of Korean-American cartoonists in the American animation industry.
K-ON? Excellence? *head implodes*
It might be a good anime but its not worth any awards
In other words, fill every slot with Summer Wars and you can't go wrong.
So did Eden of the East win an award for best cinematic timing in an anime?
"TV Category Excellence Award – TIE –
K-ON! / Higashi no Eden"
It's right there.
Try reading, anon. Saves yourself from looking stup.......owh so that's why your anons!
I see you're not keen to memes.
Wow.. gonna check out Summer Wars now.
You should dude, and hurry. Brilliant show.
Front cover looks a little dull but makes up in content and....well... take the awards as an example.
Quen, it's Itoshiki Nozomu, not Nozumu.
It would't be one of my articles without a typo, so it was necessary...
Thank you!
evangelion 2.0 was awesome without a doubt but im surprised it won for music... i guess it didn't win for music "placement" cause some of the song choices for certain scenes *especially the end* were pretty bad.
Wooooo! Time of Eve got In. 6 Great episode
March!!! I really hope the Blu-ray release of Summer Wars comes true!
That is one nice pic for K-ON! And also now I'm really curious how Evangelion 2.0 is. TV series and the OVA was a bummer.
too much nomination for Summer Wars
seriously, the plot is rather ok, artwork ok, everything is ok at max...
i would probably give it 6/10 as some people stated that the story is similar to digimon...
Summer Wars is everything that made up Japanese anime that we watched as youngsters/children back in the 90s. In other words, it gave off a traditional and nostalgic animu feeling. From the cliche "I will not give up" lines to the teenage emotional raging to the lulzy blushing.
tl;dr You must be a newfag
At first I thought the katakana for Summer Wars read "Summer Woes", hahaha.
k-on got excellence award? more like moe-xcellence award.
haha get it?
.....
*cries*
*pat* *pat*
your butt must be hurting really bad, eh?
That's a really bad pun.
Can't laugh... NEEED AIRR!!!!
