Final Fantasy XIII’s producer has expressed his interest in a Final Fantasy VII remake, and has explicitly denied there will be any DLC for Final Fantasy XIII.

Yoshinori Kitase, a Square Enix game producer and head of one of its development units, commented to the the effect that he had “a great interest” in an “HD” remake of Final Fantasy VII, saying that such a project would take the form of a “perfect” realisation.

Previously another top figure in Square Enix, Tetsuya Nomura, had scotched the notion of such a remake, so where this leaves the hypothetical project is not clear.

He (as producer of Final Fantasy XIII, together with director Motomu Toriyama) also carefully touches upon the criticism the game has attracted in Japan in a tame interview situation with Sony’s minions:

What do you say to those who say the game might be too linear? Does the accusation bother you?

The earlier part of the game was intentionally created to be a linear experience because we wanted to make the experience similar to a movie or drama where players really get to know the characters and what is behind their actions.

And also, since this is a brand new system for FFXIII, we wanted to take the correct steps to make sure players can control that system at will.

So it is a surprise that so many people are commenting that the game is linear, but once you get into the area of Pulse in the game , it’s much more of a free world and the battle system really comes to life.

And once you have a good idea of how to control it, you can go full force and it should be a completely different experience.

Do you think that the idea of RPGs from the 80s and 90s being wide open is a dated stereotype?

There’s sort of a template to the RPG system, traditionally, where players would go to the town and find out information through text, leave town to fight monsters and then come back to town and buy health and items, etc.

FFXIII didn’t really look for some sort of template to follow, but we tried to go out and create and set a new trend for RPGs. So there isn’t really a thought to stick to tradition.

Developer comments published in Japan tell a different story:

The game’s linearity was just because depicting towns and so on like we did before was impossible to do on an “HD” console – it was too much work

Presumably such comments are not suitable for release until after the game has had a chance to sell internationally for a while.

Finally, he categorically denies there being any DLC for the game:

I heard there was content removed from the original game? Could it possibly resurface as DLC?

Regarding the DLC content, we feel that the final product is 100% enjoyable… it’s the complete package.

So we’re not planning any DLC at this time.

In regard to the rumored cut content, we feel it was taken out of context. There are a lot of ideas that are brought to the table, and then the team takes the best ideas out of those, and the final product is polished that way.

There was content that were “ideas” that didn’t make the final content, but the team isn’t looking to release that as downloadable content.

With DLC functionality advertised on the international version’s box, and the earlier developer comments that “the game was designed with DLC in mind but we don’t actually have any planned,” just what the developers were doing all these years is an interesting question.

You know what i fucking hate, i fucking hate companies who are so fucking predictable. When their sales are going fine, pride is everything, and when sales are going shit (aka ff13's plummetting sales), their pride means fuckall, which tells us that they dump on the fans when it's on their terms, but when we dump on them by not paying for their company staff christmas bonus then they think "Oh maybe a ff7 remake doesn't sound like such a bad idea" Fucking dogs, and now let me give you a quote from Andrew Ryan, FROM A GOOD FUCKING GAME - Bioshock 2

"I am Andrew Ryan and I am here to ask you a question:
Is a man not entitled to the sweat of his brow?

No, says the man in Washington; it belongs to the poor.
No, says the man in the Vatican; it belongs to God.
No, says the man in Moscow; it belongs to everyone.

NO SAYS THE MAN IN SQEENIX; IT BELONGS TO US.

    You know what's rather curious...

"it's too much trouble to make an HD town"

"We're interested in making an HD remake of FFVII"

... Now... How many towns would that be to turn into HD towns?

Yeeaaah... Squeenix is full of bullshit.

The towns in FF7 Is rather small. Also, Midgar would probably be different "zones" so it's easier to make an HD town that way, as the console wouldn't have to render all of the town at once.

Also, Considering they are just stating their interest in making it, and absolutely no clues to it currently being in production, it will be for the next generations consoles most likely.

    Cool!

There is a really good re-make of "Tomb Raider" selling cheaply but well in Office stores. The original Tomb Raider, just playable easily on modern systems with better graphics.

I love especially that the characters are essentially "Eco-Terrorists" though back then at least Japan didn't have a problem with that, and I'm sure wouldn't now... Well, long as they don't harass ships illegally hunting whale like creatures:-)

It's time to take Final Fantasy out behind the barn. Just give me a good Front Mission game and I'll be a loyal fan, Square Enix. Also, Hanjuku Hero? I see a great deal of promise there. Maybe not for your earnings reports (which seems to be the primary driving force behind a possible FFVII remake), but promising nonetheless.

    Just wondering...
Did you know FM5 has been released in Japan for a while now?
Unlike FM4 it doesn't currently have an international counterpart, which is a sad/bad thing as FM4 is awesomeness incarnate :<

And you might want to keep an eye out for Sakura Taisen 5 (SakuraWars for nonJaps apparently) as it is going to have robots and TBS as well ;)

I am in no way affillitated with or profiting from posting this link:
    http://www.sakurawars.us/
Not that it contains anything interesting to start with... Try this on for size:

    Yes, 'moe moe'

That said, I don't agree with euthanizing Final Fantasy. FF7, FF8, the Final Fantasy Tactics experience, all of this at least warrants it to live out its life in peace.
In my eyes, FF9 and FF10 were instances of fail, FF12 was decent enough (at least it was innovative) and I haven't passed judgment on FF13 yet... However being forced to make do with a dub reaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaally pains me -_-

It's not that I NEED Jap voice acting, it's more that dubs tend to suck in ways unutterable. I blame the Elfen Lied dub, Lucky Star dub, Xenogears (oh LAWD at least TRY to lipsync and emote) and friends for this conception.

Never thought I would be ever saying this, but FUCK YOU SquareEnix. DO NOT remake VII, you're going to butcher it. You're already milking the fans of all this VII merchandise, do not destroy the actual game that made the series what it is...excuse me, WAS.

You have fallen off, and now you're only thinking about a FFVII remake because you seem to finally be touching the bottom of your pockets. SquareSoft FTW. Squeenix, may you burn in fucking hell.

Some of you may not know that console manufacturers like Microsoft requires game companies to state download content on the box, if the game company so much as thought to plan something in the future.

However, game company are not required to put up actual download content, should they decide not to, even if it's stated on the box.

Saying that depicting towns on an HD console is impossible really irks me. Heck, White Knight Chronicles does it very well. The towns are lush are well defined, full of active NPCs. Square-Enix just got lazy and went for the quick pay-off at the detriment of its fanbase. Sure, FF13 will sell relatively well, but 15 won't.

Secondly, remember that "it would be very interesting" in Japanese translates to "but it's not going to happen" in direct English.

    Avatar of Artefact

Yes, it's doubly problematic because as far as I can see the original Japanese transcript is not available, just some interpreter's version. The Japanese sources are translating back from English just to make things even more confusing.

Still, Japanese sources are reporting it as a positive affirmation not a polite denial.

The team behind FFXIII aimed too high. They weren't smart enough to realistically create anything simple like what WKC did, or perhaps even Fable-ish. (The WKC example being actually kind of mediocre.) SE shot themselves in the foot by even mentioning "a HD town was too much," much less properly wording it as "the HD town we envisioned was too much work."

SE made a bad choice focusing too much on the combat. I'm actually happy with the combat of FFXIII, but everything else was just meh. MEH.

So there's two trains of thought. One that goes: Gameplay is all you need! Supposedly satisfied if all you pay attention to is combat? And the other one that goes: It's the story that's important! So what if the game is linear? Then there's the auxiliary one that's: GRAPHICS ARE STUPID. But boobs are okay.

Boobs always win, whether they're DFC or just boobs.

I think they best strategy now is put more effort in gameplay and stop trying to make game that play like watching movie or drama, or they can just forget about making game and focus in making movie instead.

Take Hellgate for example: good movie+crappy gameplay = total failure. So if they continue the way they doing things now, no master what are their next step I hardly think they will success. Good riddance though.
