A senior Square Enix employee is being reported as publically saying that Final Fantasy XI will terminate in 2010, to be replaced by Final Fantasy XIV.
The remark was apparently made by one of Square Enix’s top HR people at the “Square Enix Recruiting Seminar 2011,” and duly reported on a personal blog by an attendee:
“I think some amongst you will know, but FF11 started in 2002 … Well, this year it’ll end and the stage will shift to FF14.”
The witness suspects the remark was inadvertent, but it is adamant it was made. Oddly, first the article and then the entire site which reported the remark were taken down shortly after.
Square Enix has previously assured players that any shutdown of the game would be announced a year in advance, so just what is going on is not clear.
A tweet from Square Enix’s CEO also denies the rumour, saying “that’d be troubling,” although this apparent rebuttal is rather short on details, such as whether the remarks were actually made and whether there is anything to them…
In any case, with the sequel nearing release and the original game increasingly showing its age, the day of any shutdown must be close at hand, and it seems pertinent that one of 2ch’s threads on the subject is entitled “How many people will commit suicide when FF11 ends?”

o.o wow
So much about FFXIII being the last one eh.
they said FF13 was the last of its "type". not the last final fantasy.
Finally that shit (FFXI) will end !!!
Everyone who managed to get relic weapon and kraken club will commit suicide for sure.
....i got my Relic gear.... -_-;;
Relics weren't that hard to get/do at all.
The only hard thing in that game was finding a god damn party.
Either where a class nobody wanted or had to deal with chinese/jap players that couldn't understand you and vice-versa.
I assume this will go in affect worldwide since servers are shared internationally. It saddens me to see It end since I was one of them that played since the NA release. Alas, all must come to an end eventually, It was a good run.
yeah, same here, i played since the released and quite at the end of last year. hope ff14 will be even better, might even consider playing ff14.
Let's hope it doesn't turn into an online movie game. (OMG).
:V
Who's going to want to play XIV if all their stuff is going to be deleted 7 years from now?
Some territories have only had it for 3 years.
More like who wants their stuff for longer than a few years anyway, i can understand personal characters and the items you have and stuff but how long do you want to play a game, 7 years, thats about 1/10 of the average age ratio. 5 years tops but 7? Come on...
Well, counter strike comes to mind. It's been over 10 years and people still aren't bored of that thing.
Don't forget Starcraft.
but even star craft is getting a sequel which will pretty much kill off the first.
Yeah but anons, i said who wants their stuff for that long, implying i was talking about rpg and mmo games in general not all games, even i can pick up starcraft or counterstrike and play it but they are different you can just pick them up and play whenever, rpg's and mmo's take time, they become a little of you but having them for that length of time is mad.
“How many people will commit suicide when FF11 ends?”
I don't even want to think about all the hours spent now.
Makes me wonder what would happen if Blizzard announce WOW service is coming to an end...
I WOULD say it'd be good for a laugh, but the sheer amount of people thrown into depression might really be scary.
No more hikkikomori. or however you spell it
The world would become a better place... that's for sure.
Blizzard employees will probably have several thousand death threats a day, but who cares about them?
I believe the correct and realistic answer is.
Hackers passionate about the game will go in get the data they need, make their own servers, become digital WOW 'crack' dealers and fournish illegal access to WOW for a hefty sum.
I'd say the 15 dollars a month will keep the servers on for a long time. As the playerbase shrinks they will stop making expansions and reduce the number of servers by merging in order to keep themselves in the green. But no reason it can't go for a long time to come.
But i won't be on there. I'm a one year clean recovering WoWaholic.
There still would be private servers, like at every game.
There are already private servers for both FFXI and WoW, but good luck for small hacker groups to put up a server and service as big as Blizzard's and managing to not get any lawsuits, seriously.
good job anon 20:55! for me it was easier to quit smoking than it was to quit wow.
Now the real question is...Do I get to keep my K Club and relics?
Development or operation? That's crucial. It could be they've halted all development, but maintaining the servers could mean pure profits.
If the user base is decreasing, they can merge worlds pretty easily (force same-name PCs to rename) by using the world transfer already in place; that'd reduce the number of servers to maintain.
I'd like them to keep it going, I've got a crapload of merits to get, still.
Square Enix sure knows how to fail...they should move their base of operations to China.
an mmo lasting like eight years is hardly failing tbh
Not the game, the fact that they're ending it this year when they promised to give players a 1-year heads up. Always contradicting themselves.
Well, the article here says that the remark was taken down again, so I wouldn't really call this an official statement :V It's probably a bit too early to call 'fail' on Square Enix in this case imo
Square has said many times previously that service will continue until there is no longer a demand for it.
This Square exec obviously was just talking out of his ass and doesn't really know anything about it.
Seriously why would Square kill a game when over 500k people a month are paying 15 bucks to play it?
$7.5 million a month is way more than enough to keep stagnating servers going.
Failing is warhammer online, being greedy is world of warcraft catering to the casual players for profit, FFXI kept its strong player base and all the qualities of a real mmorpg
I'm almost curious to know what your definition of a real MMORPG is, but I'm certain any attempt to give a reasonable answer will be unabashedly feckless.
"Real" MMORPGs require players to play 4+ hours a day in order to accomplish anything and cause you to lose an hour of progress if you make a single mistake.
See, that's why WoW isn't real. It's possible for people who have full-time jobs and don't live in their parents' basement to spend 30 minutes playing it in an evening and not feel like they've gone backwards when they're done.
yes cuz going backwards = fun.
This is why people want you to design games for them Min, because of your grasp of whats makes gamers happy.
WoW is FTW because it can make the casuals happy and still cater to the hardcore.
Real MMOs don't have fuckawful control schemes or require a controller, but whatever Mr. TotallyNotBiased.
I played FF11 for a decent amount of time.
It wasn't "fun"; but it did give me a sense of accomplishment. It was damn hard. Any idiot can succeed in WoW.
If a game isn't fun then its no game. If you want a sense of accomplishment go and get a job.
there isn't exactly a very big legitimate population in ff11 at this point...
Nice talking out of your ass. FFXI has retained a steady 500k population for years.

not gonna happen, FF14 is by no means a replacement. its not a hardcore MMORPG. they just released new content for FF11 not to long ago. i predict at least 2 or 3 more years of FF11. they wouldn't just make expansions and new content if they were just gonna shut the servers down.
How do we know FF 14 isn't a "hardcore" mmo? Has anyone even played it yet?
there is info about it, and Youtube has leaked Gameplay Footage. it might look like FF11 with upgraded graphics but the level up system and job system is completely different. the info we have on it suggest that its not a long term MMO its easier and suggests that 3 people can easily do almost anything in the game together. compared to other MMORPG games such as FF11 and WoW which can sometimes require 18+ players working together.
Games that focus on strategy last longer, i can't say for sure unless i get hands on gameplay myself, atm its just speculation. I'm sure FF11 won't end at least until they figure out if FF14 is going to be a hit.
You're suggesting that Square would take the core gameplay elements which made the game great, and just throw them out the window? I can't believe this.
I don't know if it has less strategic Gameplay but the Gameplay Movies and Information suggest that they changed pretty much the whole system to a faster, more actionlike one and did away with the levels (probably in favor of something like FFX or FFXII).
I suggest waiting for Information from the Beta first though before making Judgment.
By "hardcore" do you mean grindfest or waiting for party member? SE took the problems that plagues MMO in general and replaced it. Issues like time difference of players, they introduced short to long instances that you varies in difficulty and member counts for leveling and farming. Weapon system that defines your job ability so departing players can be replaced.
MMO in nature evolves along with the core player base. Thus they have expansion introduces new game play and strategies.
So comparing FFxi before Zilart to FFxiv would be fair. That's when the level cap was at 65 and it takes a week to get one level after 30. And Relic armor was God-like.
KILL IT WITH FIRE
Damn and FF11 was the only MMO i was ever willing to pay $15 a month for... was gonna try it out when I was old enough to apply for a credit card :P
Coming from a player as far back as the beta Cactuar server of FFXI…you are lucky. FFXI was best during beta but when retail hit the game became more of a masochistic prison. :3
