Nippon Ichi’s Salvation: New Disgaea on PS3

Nippon Ichi is set to announce a new Disgaea title for the PS3, in what is thought to be an effort to restore the company’s fortunes after a 100% drop in profits, a humiliating stock market plunge, and the dismal performance of its recent releases.
From Nippon Ichi’s own “the plan for next term” presentation:
“The Disgaea series – 1.6 million copies shipped!”
“Awareness and brand strength grow!”

The company also promises heavy emphasis on the North American market, although so far its efforts in this direction have been less than reassuring.
The actual sales figures for Disgaea reveal the brand is in fact dependent on an interminable series of handheld spinoffs and remakes:

Fans could be forgiven for thinking the reason the main Disgaea titles remain stagnant with PS1 era graphics and gameplay is so they can be easily milked on portable systems.
However, producing endless rehashes and a series of frankly embarrassing PS3 releases seems to have left the company in a state of creative and technical enervation. Disgaea 4 may be the company’s last chance to get back on track and rescue both the franchise and its increasingly tenuous financial position.

I honestly see this is being a bad move on their part.
Disgaea 3 didn't really do to well because PS3 wasn't all too popular at the time, and it still isn't.
Smart thing to do would be to make a new disgaea game or new original series and then put it on the Wii.
Because lets face it. If NIS decides to go another route with the way they make their games on a terms of both game play and graphic capabilities, It'll just end up looking like a Wii game anyways.
well i dare say i like how disgaea script goes all the way but still rehashing thing wont get them anywhere its like they are overusing the character yet they dont develop them... you know the feeling where the creators dont put their love into the characters they create...
you make me believe that you want to make the story more adult like,but they are still mostly targeted at children entertainment,even though adults like it.
I wouldn't hate it if they kept the low-key graphics and sprites for D4, but I really hope it'll at least be better made than 3. The slowdown in that game was atrocious, at times.
i wouldn't mind buying disgaea 1 2 and 3 for the pc.But i don't know about other people how much they would actually want to buy such a game for pc.
i don't expect anything, because it has became a tradition of this softhouse to reclycle their games.
I WANT A NEW DISGAEA, with new story and new characters! i don't want to pay 50 bucks on psn just to have bonus form previous games.

I'll totally buy a 360 version of this game, but only if it has lots of customizable guns and realistic blood physics.
Even better if they made it an open, free roaming game with lots of zombies. Headshot! Bam! :-)
Disgaea 4 should go straight to PSP, IMO.
If Disgaea 4 isn't 2D then the fanbase would riot. Sure it could be made a bit prettier but Disgaea fans don't WANT it in 3D with over 9 million pixels per character model.
It's a shame every game have Disgaea 1 was just terrible as fuck.
If it looks like Valkyria Chronicles and has Flonnezilla, I'll buy it.
Decent quality 2D graphics in high definition are a buttload of work, unlike 3D ones. Then again, 3D graphics are much uglier and a whole lot less appropriate than 2D ones.
They should release the games on both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, so as to garner enough sales from all markets rather than depend on shit, hackneyed portable adaptations, and only Nintendo games sell on the Wii.
I really think if they're going to put it on the PS3 they should have at least PS2 quality graphics, becuase the PS2 one had PS1 graphics.
what i want from a new disgaea:
- at least atelier rorona equal graphics
- a silent and cool main character would be nice once in a while
- even more monster that i can create and choose from.
- a way to max your charcters fast enough without the dupe glitch.
and even with it... why do i have to reload 10++ times to get the same rarity on an item-god item. some things stat wise are needless hard to get and frustrating.
- less weapon and resident maxing, its ok with duping but still isnt fun enough to justify the time invested.
Back to the bread and butter staple of Nippon Ichi.
Wished Disgaea 3 was released for PS2, since it probably could have sold more copies that way...

I actually agree. Most 360 owners, who are mostly Americans, just can't get enough of their HAELOW THREEY and CAWWLLL OFFVV DJUUUTEHHH.
It's because of these people that the gaming industry is slowing down on innovation. It's enough nowadays to push out a game with PURRRTEH pixelshaded fullscreen particle effects in OMGWTFULLHD, but with gameplay as innovative as BUNNY HOP BUNNY HOP HEAD SHOT HEAD SHOT.

Well the fighting in Disgaea is rather entertaining. But unless they innovate a little... That's all they have going for the game.

Graphics are irrelevant, Disgaea brings the player hundreds of hours of level grinding, battles with seemingly no damage cap and cute characters. It's all a solitary gamer will ever need.
I like sprite graphics anyways, all the good old jrpg games had them so it's my comfort zone.
I sure hope that isn't an insult to Wii owners -_- We equally love the series despite hogging Fire Emblem ^_^
What I would like to see sometime would be some decent multiplayer action and a Fallen Angel Flonne mode where teaching the Netherworld denziens Love and Peace! with massive Holy explosions :D
Either that or an Etna Mode that vastly differs from the main game.
If they REALLY needed to make money they could fix D3's slowdown and make a combination disc of all 3 or release 2 as a DS game.

Wrong. I love each MGS for its graphics as well as its gameplay. And I'm sure you are on a minority if you think that.
I think if they're going to make it for the PS3 they might as well doll it up a bit. I don't expect the best graphics but at least make it prettier. If not, they might as well make it straight for the DS and PSP.
Sony should really stop them releasing any more Disgaea 3-type games on the PS3. They just make a mockery of the platform and its potential, let alone what they say about NIS.

I'm pretty sure anon was referring to their anouncement of bringing Toradora to the U.S. That in conjunction with a new Disgaea -might- just be enough to allow them to recoup. However, if they screw this up (it's curtains).
NISA announced it yesterday along with persona trinity soul, pandra hearts, and wagaya no oinari-sama. I have no idea where NISA gets the money for all their side ventures. I just hope they keep enough for Ar Tonelico 3 and Atelier Rorona.
I think it'd be wiser for the standard Disgaea gameplay just to do releases direct to PSP or else soup up gameplay and graphics into some kind of enhanced 3d environment like they do with Phantom Brave.
NIS and NISA are very separate companies. Please do not confuse them.
NISA is a joke. NIS is just misguided.
They're still part of the parent company though. And their decision to get into the anime distribution market is very much relevant to this story.
