Haruhi Movie Reaches #7 in Japanese Box Office

The recently released Suzumiya Haruhi no Shoushitsu movie attained the #7 spot in the Japanese nation-wide box office during its opening weekend, an exceedingly impressive figure for an otaku oriented anime film, although not nearly as high as last year’s incredible Evangelion 2.0’s debut at #1.
What makes Shoushitsu’s ranking especially notable is the number of theatres in which it was shown in comparison to the other “normal” films making an appearance on the Top 10 for the last weekend’s Box Office receipts:
Japan Box Office Ranking Feb 6 – 7
Ranking / Movie Title / # of Theatres
1. Avatar (365)
2. Oceans (302)
3. Otouto (303)
4. Invictus (320)
5. Golden Slumber (308)
6. Samurai Sentai Shinkenger vs. Go-onger: GinmakuBang!! (140)
7. Suzumiya Haruhi no Shoushitsu (24)
8. The Lovely Bones (305)
9. Sayonara Itsuka (184)
10. Paranormal Activity (160)
For comparison, the two other best performing otaku films since last summer were Macross Frontier ~Itsuwari no Utahime~ with a debut at #9 at 30 theatres in September, and the all-conquering Evangelion 2.0 juggernaut with a lofty #1 debut at 120 theatres in June.
It should be noted that while these figures are impressive enough in and of themselves, such anime films lie far behind the numbers reached by mainstream fare such as the monolithic Miyazaki’s offerings or even child-oriented anime movies such as Pokémon – indeed, last year’s Pokémon Arceus outsold even Evangelion 2.0’s annual ticket proceeds by ¥4.4 billion to Eva’s ¥3.6.
Nonetheless, the fact that titles so heavily marketed towards otaku such as Evangelion, Haruhi and Macross can rub shoulders alongside traditional Hollywood hits high ontop Japan’s Box Office should stand testament to the reach of Akiba.

the movie was perfect!
as a side note, it's alright even if you extremely hate it, but would you haters start to learn to refrain from adding meaningless posts that might hurt REAL FANS' feelings? just saying you don't like it with 'logical' reason is enough, isn't it?
and who are we (excluding me, conceitedly says) as to saying 'forgive' and or 'won't forgive' to KA for ee and the movie
24 theaters and it is at number 7?
Whoa, shiet.
RESPECT
Shit, Avatar's still #1?! I was hoping for it to be dethroned.
Why the negative vote? You gaijins are butthurt!
They couldn't beat Avatar damn you Japanese why did fail Suzumiya Haruhi no Shoushitsu !?
Haruhi lost to Avatar?
wtf.
They ought to make Suzumiya Haruhi no Shokutsu next
I guarantee it will be #1 at the box office for months
God Speed Love made #1...don't know for how long though...and I don't care. That movie was fucking awesome.
Pretty good work for a movie in more-or-less limited release. Should have a solid per-screen average. Despite the Endless Eight fiasco, I'm looking forward to seeing this film.
at least haruhi is more popular than naruto/bleach
only 24 theaters and in rank 7
even naru/blea can't reach top 10
Its the smurf movie that's number 1 wtf
Funny, last time I remember, One piece movie 10 also managed to get 1st position in Japan's Box Office on it's opening week at 188 theatres
I didn't include One Piece or say, Naruto, into any of the comparison numbers I included in the post.
You can interchange "late-night anime" with "otaku anime" in the post, as they are virtually synonymous terms.
Cute pic of Yuki.
bandia have dubbing rights to it? hope so
The Kyo-ani troll is simple:
Yuki is actually the Goddess not Haruhi.
Those who have not realized as much are blind to the truth.
No, I thought it was that Kyon is actually god, or something like that.
No, you are blind.
--->COC
Withe the amount of tickets each single otakus buys it isn't surprising
Avatar sucks balls!
Suzumiya Haruhi no Shoushitsu FTW
Don't know about Haruhi but yes Avatar sucks donkey balls.
Don't know about Haruhi but yes Avatar sucks monkey balls.
fixed
Paranormal Activity makes Avatar look like 7 Samurai
Haruhi lost to a Power Rangers movie!? WTF?
This post was funny. Wait, it wasn't.
Holy shit, don't write a post if you don't know what you're talking about unless you want to look like a retard.
Anyway, for a niche movie, it's probably the best it could ever be, and I'm actually impressed at the fact that it even got a place on the top 10.
it should have been #8
for obvious reasons
I can't wait for this to release here in the US.
I can't wait for Wendee Lee's sweet Haruhi voice to grace my ears once more.
I thought they got a new dub voice for Haruhi...
Need in states on fathom events man that would be epic. only the ticket would be like 12 bucks
Good thing it didn't get 8th place.
I LOL'd
I don't know if I should respond to that, im still laughing my ass off...
Moe Yuki did that. I am proud japan for you still have taste.
Moe Yuki > all
I can't wait to see it ;;
The only reason apart from nopan haruhi was moe yuki after all... megane fetish rules!
Agree.
You mean, they've ruined the only good thing about the character? I am saddened by this.
Moe Yuki + Long haired Haruhi...
:]
you said it!
omg so psyched to catch this!!
I feel that this may be all a part of Kyo-Ani's next big troll, but oh well. It seems reviews favor this movie, can't wait for its subbed release.
On another note,
DAT YUKI.
People really need to stop with the "KyoAni trolling" thing.
indeed, I think 7th place while only shown in 24 theaters is a feat in itself. 8th place would have been embarrassing.
Did someone say 'KyoAni' and 'troll?'

corny post is corny... try again please....
Even something as cheesy sounding as "6. Samurai Sentai Shinkenger vs. Go-onger: GinmakuBang!!" can beat it.
Anime is small fry even in Japan :O
That is all Decade's fault! ONORE DIKEIDO!
Poor little weaboo... You don't even know what tokusatsu is and means in japanese pop culture...
That's tokusatsu.
what no number 1? shame on you otaku try harder! that way kyo-ani wont try as hard.
who am i kidding i am impressed with 7 :P
Right. Shinkenger has nothing on Kamen Rider. DECADE!!
Paranoia Activity? That shit movie got on the list? Well, I guess, like me, people got curious on how a really low budget movie would be like. Go Nagato! Oh and Avatar rocks too.
That must mean that there are a hella lot more rejects in Japan then.
It's sad
Crap like haruhi shouldn't be in the top 100
no troll intended...
Who ever said anime was big in Japan? Weeaboos are the ones that makes it LOOK big in Japan.
People are just as much of a reject in Japan as in, say, USA if they like anime.
17:45
we see you trollin'
we're hatin'
It was only in 24 theaters, bro.
