touhou_kinema_kan_pv.jpg

The PV for the latest pro-quality Touhou music video from doujin circle Kinema Kan has come online to promote the full DVD’s release at the next Touhou-only Reitaisai event in March.

As with their previous release, the quality is superb and is a must see for any Touhou fans.

ゆっくりみていってね!!!

The video just came out overnight from Kinema Kan; according to their website the doujin animation will be available at March 14th’s Reitaisai, truly one of the most important days of the year for any Touhou fan.

The Reitaisai website should also be a useful source of information for anyone planning / hoping / dreaming of attending the 7th convention.

The games are good, character designs are awesome and music is godly.
    That's why it's popular.

I think you're mistaking between character design and artwork, sir.

No! The character design is great, I think. Touhou got one of the most unique character design I've ever seen. It just that ZUN's drawing sucks.

Picasso has some crap character design but lots of people love it.

Zun's and 07th' character design are unique; they have a certain charm to it.

Frankly, the original character design isn't that great, but Gitami is right.
Plus you can find great doujinshi (both music and pix).
    And the music is godly.

Didn't Zun say that he doesn't want an anime in response to the touhou doujin anime? He said he wants all touhou fans to play the games and that having an anime will attract fans that only watch the show and never bother playing the games.

Didn't part of it also have to do with him thinking "mainstream = evil"? Like he wanted to keep his storyline and characters a big unknown otaku secret? Like it's some stupid exclusive club?

Either way, I'll never understand him. Preventing the show from becoming an anime isn't stopping fans from liking it without playing the games. I think I've seen a crapton who admit they don't even like the games, but they still love various girls from it.

ZUN only wants his work and it's doujin variant to be strictly doujin only and meant to be sold in doujin event like Comiket or Reitaisai. Only he alone knows why. And we will never understand why.

Maybe he don't want it to be commercialize because he doesn't trust commercial entertainment company?

I only wondering why did he let Goodsmile Company make Touhou Figmas and Nendos though.

A lot more corporate involvement or perhaps it restricts open story favoured by Zun as in things becoming canon. He has sole ownership of the intellectual property rights to Touhou and he doesn't object to any fanwork, well he does to the anime but he isn't ordering them not to do it.

The "mainstream = evil" is more to do with the fact that his making the games is a violation of his contract and he could lose his job because of it.

With a franchise like Touhou it is hard to believe he wouldn't make vastly more money from any royalties than any low-end development job would provide.

Not everyone is greedy, Arty. It's the feeling accomplishment is what he seek. Something that greedy people or most modern people can't understand.

    according to Gensokyou.org
    http://www.gensokyo.org/archives/92

"Doujin games, which don’t have to worry about high profit margins and huge returns, have the opportunity to do whatever they want more often, which is good – ZUN doesn’t like what seems to be the current trend that it has to be all serious to succeed. Further, the distance between users and developers has shrunk considerably – criticism can pop up on the net almost instantly, even from people who haven’t really played the game. So, developers can’t spend too much time worrying about others’ reviews and criticisms. If people hated it 100%, they wouldn’t even bother with reviews. It’s normal for people to be vocal in their complaints. Of course, if he actually said this online there’d be no end to it – which seems to be why he prefers venues such as this symposium."

But that would kill the doujin scene, doujin merchandize, anime, manga, etc will become ilegall and some circles will feel presured to close shop. In short, going mainstream will disconect him from the people that made him in the first place.

There is a real chance people will cry sell-out if Zun went commercial, the fact he rejects mainstream comercialization buys touhou a lot of cred, after all, not only is touhou mostly doujin, but doujin has become largely touhou, it is a symbol.

This reminds me when wikipedia critics (like encyclopedia britanica) "suggest" wikipedia should become a pay only site with paid writers, paid articles, etc.

Except, wikipedia wouldn't be what it is if it weren't free.

Like wise, touhou probably wouldn't be as popular if it was comercially produced.

I believe ZUN still disapproves of the idea of an anime thus why an official studio hasn't picked it up. It was much the same with figures until recently.

There's already an anime series of it, it's called Touhou Niji Sousaku Doujin Anime - Musou Kakyou (or Touhou Unofficial Doujin Anime: A Summer Day`s Dream if you prefer), i've only seen the 1st ep though...
well as the title says it's not the official project of it as others said but it was still quite fun to see...

A questionable series that is, considering they only released the 1st ep and would not likely to release the 2nd. Also, doujin anime or unofficial anime doesn't count as anime series y'know.

Character design is a completely different thing than ability to draw. You may want to learn terminology before bagging something.

Touhou's characters are actually brilliantly designed, ZUN just is incapable of drawing them to their full potential. However the elements which make them amazing characters such as the details of their costume, the colours and then also their personalities and backgrounds are pretty much some of the best around.

For me the fanbase is actually what makes Touhou so awesome, it's become a culture of it's own. I'm not very good at the core games but can still appreciate the level of work that goes into each piece. I mean one man doing all that? It's nuts.

I agree, while there is some spectacular fanart of touhou characters that doesn't change the fact that the designs are horrible, and uninspired. Graduating from a design school I can tell you at least that much. although fanboys have like worse

I agree about the designs tis too bad that there is so many great artists wasting their time with these mediocre character designs. I myself like the games and music though.

how much fan art that goes into this instead of better things is pretty disgusting I must admit though. XD

The chibi Yukari jumping into her border rip is cute as hell lol~

Also for Touhou's popularity... It most likely didn't happen overnight.

Character Designs are very unique from each other (with only a few similarities between less known characters)
The art is meh, but the fanbase more than makes up for it with their own artwork.

In essence Touhou was MADE by ZUN but completed by fans.

Elements that drew people in include solid musical themes, amazing designs using mathematics (Science becoming art), and things became hard, but never impossible to play with the help of "bombs", but completion required play without them which left the challenge there as you got used to avoiding the patterns.
