Microsoft Ends Xbox Live Service

yayoi-standing-on-xbox.jpg

Microsoft has announced it will be closing its original Xbox Live service worldwide in April.

The official announcement:

Xbox Live services and online gaming for the first Xbox console, including for any original games playable on the Xbox 360, will be terminated on April 15th, 2010.

Some might marvel that they even kept it going this long.

No actual reason is given, but it is most probably due simply to the tiny number of players remaining for this system.

I can't reply to the anon. above because there is no reply comment, so I'll just use this instead and quote it so there's no confusion:

"No, Japan is just being xenophobic again and thinks they are gaijin consoles."

This has nothing to do with xenophobia, despite what people on 2ch may be like and other places, not all gamers in japan are idiotic racists just because they don't like the xbox 360. If anything it's probably due to the fact that the xbox was designed so poorly that every year or so it'd fry itself and would cause the owner to go out and buy a new system.. to say it's because of "xenophobia" is just showing that you may not have a proper grasp and may prove that you're more than a little biased for the xbox itself.

    Right because the logic is:

Americans buying American products = Patriotism

Japanese buying Japanese products = Xenophobic

The 360 is a failure as a console. A game system that fails that often shouldn't even be allowed on the market.

BWAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA!!! stupid ass xbox finally getting it's just rewards. i can't wait until they go bankru...that will never happen...perhaps they think their fans will overrun ps3 servers and make them shut down online too. sorry xbox, but sony has their shit together. 1 for sony 0 for xbox. ps, to anon who thinks japan is xenophobic, i doubt that. xbox was probably made in china, look at the extreme failure rates. they are just smart enough to buy a product that will work 2 weeks after they buy it.

The original Xbox Live... Not the current Xbox Live... Microsoft likely shut it down on the pretense that it had like 10 remaining subscribers..

Gotta love how bias Artefact is though, not posting an article on something as pivotal as monster hunter frontier being confirmed for the xbox 360, along with FF14 confirmed to not be a ps3 exclusive. Now i don't consider myself a fanboy of either console specifically, they both lay a few golden egg games here and there but you could at least post the news a bit more honestly, microsoft ending original xbox live is nothing compared to some of the recent console news, it would be nice to not see your bias so blatantly obvious, by posting an article like this and expecting less than half to read it properly ending up with plenty of the comments thinking microsoft are ending 360 live, way to troll lol.

Well, I think XBox is a great console. Not pretty well on par with the others if it wasn't for the XBox Live.

And now, they are terminating what I concider the best in the market, the internet service?

I have always set the consoles like this.

    XBox - Best in internet
PS3 - Grahpic, interactions and possibilities
Wii - Gameplay and party fun for the family

    And now it's like, gone?

Past experience indicates nobody really cares about Monster Hunter. We did report on the PS3 losing FF13 exclusivity so your argument could use some work.

Yeah but past experience doesn't show that ps3 fanboys outweigh the xbox 360 fanboys on Sankaku either so you arguement for even posting the article in the first place has no justification.

Sony has their shit together? That's funny.

Xbox Live is far more functional than the PSN, and besides, PSN is going to start charging you for shit soon, idiots, so count your days.

The Xbox has a 3 year warranty because of the RRoD. If it doesn't happen in three years, it doesn't happen at all. They get your system back to you in a week, if not less.

Besides, tell me five good games for the PS3 that aren't for the Xbox too.

Anyway, they can't possibly mean worldwide, because Xbox Live is alive and well in the USA, because of all the MW2 and Halo retards. If they shut it down here, they lose millions of dollars almost instantly. It would be the stupidest economic decision of the century. Even more so with Bioshock 2 on its way.

By the way: Get an IQ, PS3 fanboys. Your system sucks too. Get over it. In fact, at the rate the Wii is improving, it might be the top system in the end.

Cheering for the fall of something that you have no affiliation with whatsoever is as stupid as laughing at someone else that got in a car wreck. It just makes you look like a selfish, insensitive asshole.

Or in this case, a large group of selfish, insensitive (and immature) assholes.

And no, I'm not an Xbox fanboy. Every controller I've bought from Microsoft has had something different wrong with it. All six of them. They suck. The thing is, the game developers don't suck, and they make it worth tolerating the sticky control stick.

Even if I'm playing on Veteran.

Although I always knew Wii sucked, now that you mention that, your right about the family fun thing. PS3 really does have better graphics and games, that's fact, but XBox being best in internet? I gotta disagree. XBOX Live costs money, which means it requires a credit card to join. XBOX Live may take up bandwidth, but most likely, it wont. And its got no censoring system built into it. PS3- free, and clean.

Not really... the 360 almost always keels over dead one day. The original XBox, after being hooked up and unplugged a few times, would sometimes burst into flames one day and burn your house down.

"No actual reason is given, but it is most probably due simply to the tiny number of players remaining for this system, never popular in Japan even during its peak years."

This isn't why they're ending it. They're ending it for every country due to them not wanting to spend the money to keep it running, and they're touting updates to Live for 360 games as the trade-off.

Minus the Japan part it is exactly why they are ending it - too few users now.

Sorry, but even this is not entirely true.

Microsoft admits that a significant amount of players still play certain original xbox games over live. Halo2 for example, still has a an absurd amount of players. Among several other old hit titles.

The reasons are not made clear, but they lie elsewhere.

Um Artefact you might wanna retranslate that article. The actual quote on the Japanese page says

"Xbox Live services and online gaming for the first Xbox console, including for any original xbox games playable on the Xbox 360, will be terminated on April 15th, 2010."

They are closing the online service for old xbox games, including the ones that are backwards compatible. Xbox360 games will be unharmed by this.

Actually, MS is pulling the Xbox Live plug for the first Xbox *entirely*. I.e. ALL games from the original Xbox (even those that can be played in the 360) will be disabled from online play.
