Nippon Ichi’s Worst Game of 2010 nominee Last Rebellion has sold a staggering 3 thousand copies in Japan.
Excerpts from the January 25-31 top 50, selected new releases only:
1. Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Reverie (DS – 909,000)
2. End of Eternity (PS3 – 125,800)
4. Ar Tonelico 3 (PS3 – 85,700)

Nippon Ichi is said to have developed the game exclusively for a western audience, suggesting it might harbour a rather unflatteringly low opinion of what is needed to secure sales in these markets.

Day 1 purchase for me. It's a budget release after all. It has a pretty heroine and it's a JRPG on the PS3, and it's already in English, what more can I ask?

Well, from what I understand, the only low point of the game are the graphics and the voice acting. The battle system might also take some getting used to.

You obviously never played AT2, since it had plenty of "creepy" elements. Also, get your facts straight. AT2 for all of 2007 didn't even break 100k units whereas AT3 in the first THREE days is already at 85k. It probably won't do much better than 2, but it's certainly not doing worse.

The fanservice in Ar Tonelico is as bad as most anime. The story is actually fairly interesting and the character dynamic from the Diving sequences is actually really well written, if not a bit campy at times.

I don't know how to feel about this., The fact that it didn't sell more than 3,000 or the fact that it sold 3,000 in the first place...
I can't really say "poor NIS" if they intended it to sell this way. I just worry that NIS, and most Japanese developers for that matter, have no grasp at all on what sells in western markets.
It always seems like half of the games we do ask for, we never get, and instead get watered down generic garbage instead.
What "you" ask for is NOT what the rest of the "western audience" asks for. For every one person who wants a Nippon Ichi game, there are a thousand who want the next Final Fantasy or Zelda. The Nippon Ichi (and anime themed games in general) fanbase is certainly growing, but it's far from being the most in-demand franchise from Japan.
You clearly misunderstand me. What I am saying is that it may be a mistake for Japanese developers to make a game specifically for a western market. I believe they should just focus on making great games, because in many cases the their local market IS their western market, if you get my meaning. Final Fantasy and Zelda weren't originally designed for a western audience, and yet they have achieved massive success over the years. A developer doesn't have to target any particular market...All they have to do is make something amazing and the money will flow.
When I said that we never get half the games we ask for, I was basically making reference to the many great A+ titles that were previewed in western gaming magazines but never released. Tales of Phantasia comes to mind right away. I seem to recall people showering the game with praise in 1994/1995, and many people were patiently waiting for the title on the SNES, but it never came. Namco was staring a giant pile of money in the face and walked away... They do that a lot it seems.
