2ch users have shared screenshots of their desktops, with every style, theme and OS in evidence; as with their rooms however, they are rather more stylish than might be thought, and notably lacking in obsession or perversion…
Those looking for more can see large numbers of Sankaku Complex user desktops on the forums; those looking for actual wallpaper style images can find plenty both on the Channel and amongst the galleries.

Gigantic icons for Sazae... sorta saddened to see Apple.
Yes, how dare people enjoy a better thought out UI.
(And don't even think of stating otherwise unless you know what Fitts's Law is without reference.)
Finder reminds me of Windows 3.1, no joke.
Nice wallpapers by the way, wish i had some of them :(
Yeah indeed, the wallpaper that 028 has particularly struck my mind. Looking for it now
images 59 and 60... not the best way to order it...

upload the sceenshot and it finds it
it hasnt failed me yet
Am I the only one in the world that has his Windows Taskbar on the side?
When having many windows open, the names stay better readable, and on widescreen screens it seems to fit better.
^_^ Not the only one. Back when I used Windows I started to do that to. Works even better when you have a large screen. Though since switching to Linux I haven't had a need to do that anymore. Multiple workspaces solves everything (plus you can get the OS X like view of all the windows on the screen), I also get to leave programs running fullscreen in their own desktops.
If you want a better OS use Linux, also the problem with apple computers is hardware more so than software.
And lastly, implying you cant change the UI in windows.
Enjoy your inferior computer.
Yes enjoy Linux or Apple if you intend to miss out on basically every game.
you can use window emulators for linux to play your games or run programs.
Even being a Linux fanboy myself, I still find it childish and irritating to go around every single OS-related topic posting "OMG GAIZ USE TEH LINUCKS"...
Seriously, give people a break and let them enjoy their computers without giving trolls food for an OS-inspired flame war.
And since I want to be irritatingly honest, this is not the place to prove your OS's e-penis size, nor are we educated enough about computers to have complete, objective, scientific opinions, backed up by evidence.
On topic, awesome screenshots. Those desktops rape mine aesthetically in more than 10^100 ways.

That's like using a mac with Bootcamp, what the fuck is the point of using an emulator if you can just use the os itself instead of a virtual environment which runs far less efficiently.
@HARDKOAR
with the new VT-d (not to be mistaken with the old VT-x) it is possible to get about ~98% of the real HW power. if you have a MB with VT-d support and use xen (currently the only one that supports it).
So i guess in a few months it might be a real solution (if they deliver what they promise).
On the topic of "my OS is the best":
use the one u like, everyone prefers another one, each has it strength and weaknesses. There is no "best OS".
Myself I'm a happy linux user, but sometimes have to boot windows for games.
And finally on the topic of desktops.
there are some great desktops, my fav is 9, <3 lain :)
If you're talking about "WINE" for running games under Linux, it's not a emulator. It's just a way to execute Windows executables. So it doesn't have the same performance impact as a real x86 machine emulator, such as VMWare, Virtualbox, ...
Globally, WINE just translate Windows executable calls into native calls. So Direct3D calls are transformed into OpenGL calls, DirectSound into ALSA/OSS/Pulseaudio/Whatever, ...
But this translation doesn't work everytime, mostly because none were coded or the current implementation doesn't return the right result everytime.
I played Dragon Age, Red Alert 3 and WoW quite fine with it but it surely doesn't have the same performance that their Windows counterpart on 3D intensive games, so suggesting Linux for gamers is just a no-no.
Anyway, virtualization software have to let the guest OS use the host OS graphic card directly, or running the game is impossible or quite slow at best. So, it's also a no-no, compared to Windows only.
@06:05
If you were talking to me (04:27), I never mentioned wine (which is fine for a few game, but far from being a full alternative for a windows system).
I was talking about VT-D, the Intel Virtualization tech for direct I/O, which makes it's possible to share the REAL HW with 1 VM. However currently only implemented in Xen (beta afaik).
http://wiki.xensource.com/xenwiki/VTdHowTo
Presented at Xen Summit 2k9 (december).
Slides: http://www.xen.org/files/xensummit_intel09/Graphics-Passthrough-with-VT-d.pdf
(Speech can be found on youtube, also few demo movies)
I couldn't test it yet because I don't have the required HW for it to work. I guess I'll buy a new system optimized for VT-D in a few month (as soon as more reports/tests are available, so I can be sure that it's worth it.)
The Xen Pass-Thru techniques are interesting, as they can give a perfect 3D rendering but refreshing seem quite problematic, as shown on the Alien Arena video, and performances are quite low, even while considering that the graphic card isn't a beast.
But it looks better than Virtualbox 3D supports, I'll give you that.
Anyway, Wine, is currently the only viable alternative for Windows 3D apps, as suggests AppDb's list ( http://appdb.winehq.org ). Being able to finish Dragon Age with it, lastly, perceiving heavy lag on the last battle only, I can say that's one of the best bet for running such applications on Linux. Same thing for simpler applications, unless they don't work, in which case virtualization will be obviously better.
VMWare Server might also be an option, if it has the same performance as VMware Fusion.
OS fags...
Fitts' Law is too crude to model a modern OS. If I pop a command line window I can leave Finder in the dust for task completion times.
That said, OSX and WinXP are about equal if you're comfortable with both. OSX just doesn't always let you know it's working on something, so you click and it just hangs... then responds.
I have the Haruhi nopan as wallpaper now.
I suck at editing, and well, that resolution would be fine if I had 3 monitors side by side.. still looking for a good wallpaper with that image :(
You mean the one from sankakucomplex/2010/01/29/nopan-haruhi/ right?
What's your resolution? If it's 4:3 that might be out of my league, but I could weasel it into a 16:10 for ya.
That last one.. good god
I prefer the ones with a simple background and minimal amount of icons.
Yeah, the simplistic ones with a thought out theme are the ones that are most pleasing to the eyes.
However, I don't see why people bother with this. I barely even see my own wallpaper, if I haven't got my browser on fullscreen, I'm either programming, playing games or watching anime. There's no reason to stare at the wallpaper.
I lol'd at 32 as soon as I saw it
Makes me wonder why I never saw news about the Windows 7 Japan themepack here.
You missed it, then, because I recall one or two articles about it.
Assuming you're talking about the Nanami pack.
I've seen at least one post about the Nanami themepack, if that's what you're talking about.
If its Nanami themepack, its nothing special. Though I do use the sounds.
Look at those loli!
lol it could be brother and sister ??
Was worried that I was the only one in the world who uses the taskbar on the side of my screen. Thanks #81.
Most people who don't have a widescreen tend to find that pretty annoying. I've seen several widescreen users with the taskbar on the side though.
028, I shat brix.
gief that wallpaper, does anyone haz it?
Awwww those kids kissing is sooo sweet.... AND how tha grim reaper snuck in a lil graby graby.... LOL
I love that little application in the top right corner on this picture.

Does anybody know this app?
It's a Rainmeter skin.
It's a rainmeter skin called Ayuka
To be honest, most are average. Their desktops are quite similar to 4chan's.
I don't see the wallpaper thread Tidus face
#8, I had this picture as my wall too. Except I did a better job of turning the pic into a wallpaper than he did ;D
Anyone have a link to the Kirsame Marisa background?
That grim reaper is a pedophile XD

umm... image sauce plz?
hehehh never thought i'd see some bmth on this site
lol, even death is lolicon
#77 & #51 are traps.
looking at these i'm once again tempted to tweak rainmeter like no tomorrow... although that would mean setting a permanent wallpaper to work really well and I'm enjoying the shuffle feature that 7 has for wallpapers :P
Right now I'm enjoying the Nanami Madobe themepack on my desktop and enjoying the other Nanami A-themepack that Microsoft in Japan recently released for Bing on my laptop :D
The 29th was the best.
32th was the strogest.
