Sony Rescues Bayonetta from Sega

chibi-bayonetta.jpg

Sega has admitted that its recent patch for the botched PS3 port of Bayonetta was actually made for it by Sony.

The patch itself comes in at 135mb, with its main feature being to allow a 4.5GB install, fixing the “unfixable” load issues; Sega subsequently admitted that neither they nor Platinum Games were responsible – Sony stepped in directly.

The level of exasperation Sony must have felt to take such a measure can only be guessed at.

After carefully poaching Xbox 360 exclusives and insisting PS3 games maintain relatively high standards of quality, Sega’s decision to port a major release without something as simple as HDD installation and with substantially inferior graphics most probably did not please Sony.

    exasperation <-- desperation

Come on, a 135 megs patch to do a full install of 4.5 gigs to fix the issue? Maybe better optical drive like the 360s "lower end" non BluRay drive would have helped. lol

It's not necessary that they drop Blu-ray in order to have a faster drive, they should just replace the 2× drives with 4× ones... but then all current PS3-only owners would be even more hosed than they already are.

I don't blame Sega for botching the port. It's Platinum Games' fault that they didn't do it themselves and instead decided to give the whole porting job to Sega just a few months before the release.

I don't know what sort of companies deserve a place in 'the modern games industry' by your standards, seeing how many decent/good games Sega has made this generation.
Total War series, Football Manager games, Condemned, Valkyria Chronicles, Phantasy Star... not to mention they funded Bayonetta's development.

really, valkyria chronicles is likely to become more or less drivel if sega keeps hold of it... like how they were very unhappy with the current VC fanbase so they changed platforms and art styles.

Well, so far the Project Needlemouse is looking good. It looks like they want to cater to the older Sonic fans that don't give a shit about the newer games and have complained about wanting an old school Sonic game. That is a good start.

Still, I don't expect them to stop with the shit Sonic games, though. If Needlemouse is good, we should then start bitching to get more of that.

HDMI tends to make images look quite a bit more crisp than the component cables on my TV. Maybe I'll rent them both and see for myself, but I'd lean more for PS3 if there isn't a downright staggering difference (which I don't believe there will be). Mostly because I have a preference for Sony's controller when it comes to action games (and xbox for shooters/racers)

I honestly can't stand for a company to release a game multiplatform and not try to make the two as close as possible. A port is nothing more then a stamp in my opinion that says we're fucking lazy. Then again this is Sega we're talking about. A company that thought a 3D sonic game was a good idea and did it not once, but multiple times.

Err, a 3D Sonic game is a perfectly good idea sir, just as good as a 3D Super Mario game.

Then, we have that at least 50% of Sonic Adventure wasn't a Sonic game but a treasure hunting/ robot escaping/ fishing/ shooting game, only 33% of Adventure 2 was more or less a Sonic game (too much emphasis on speed, it lacked exploration), Heroes and Shadow are just horrible, and 2K6 again 33% Sonic, in addition to being rushed and broken beyond repair. And let's not discuss the Wii suckers, just don't.

For you see, Nintendo still has Miyamoto for all their Mario and Zelda needs, whether good games or filler material, but SEGA has more or less lost Yuji Naka (the programmer and a good producer), Hirokazu Yasuhara (the game planner/ designer and a good director) and Naoto Ohshima (the original character designer). I hope you get the point, it's more or less like kicking Christopher Nolan and Christian Bale from Batman 3 and onwards...

it kind of makes me feel good to support sony and the ps3. i've got the 80gb model with all the bells and whistles on it(first generation model). it has never stopped working, unlike my xbox360 which i've sold since, and it's comforting to know that sony basically said, "goddammit SEGA! were not going to let you treat our valuable customers like shit. we'll fix it ourselves and good luck with xbox, they (xbox) may only care about the money, but we want to make sure were giving our customers the best we got, because we care about them."
Sony gets major kudos from me. i don't know how i'm going to show my appreciation now because i already got 40" sony bravia tv, ps3, psp, sony surround sound, and sony truck speakers, with 2 pioneers thrown into the mix, because, lets face it, sony isn't the best at car audio, but they are pretty damn good at home electronics.

Holy shit dude, do you really believe that? If Sony values their customers as much as you claim, why didn't they do something like this sooner?

They're doing this because Bayonetta on the PS3 didn't sell well. I don't blame PS3 users for not buying it, they got shafted on this one. Sony is just making up for what shit they gave whoever did buy it on PS3.

    ..so stop riding sonys dick.

dude. if bayonetta fails on the ps3, that wouldnt hurt sony one bit. so who you're trying to fool? sega would have been at fault for wasting so much money on bluray disc.

i truly think that sony did this because they didnt want to lose sega as a publisher. seeing how idaki easily got up and went to xbox, i think sony is simply trying to avoid a history repeat.

if you were sega and your game didnt sell for a certain system, would you make games for that system again? i think not.

with sony doing this, two valuable things happen. sega scores sales on the system and second, they get to see a fraction of wat the ps3 can really do. now do you or do you not agree. its all business and money.

It wouldn't hurt Sony one bit? Let's see.

Failing to release such a patch would HURT them, pretty bad too. If they hadn't released that patch, CONSUMERS would look at this and avoid the PS3 purchase. Taking away games like this would hurt the console too, telling people interested in the PS3 that the 360 version of this is far better...and that's all it takes, shitty or faulty games for a console can hurt because customers will see continuous games being the 'lesser' version in comparison.

Impressions like this only take one or two to lose future purchases...even a purchase to a console, and Sony has their fair share of shitty games. They might not have suffered on paper and statistics, but they're smarter then that, and that's why they released that patch.

Now do you or do you not agree?

thats just one game. a game that does not appeal to everyone. mutiplatforms are sidenotes. exclusives are the key to console decisions. when your game becomes games game of the year in many different sections, people are eventually going to want to play the game. how theyre going to uncharted 2, killzone, god of war? by buying the system. sony always loses the multiplatform war. thats old news

Yeah, this isn't the kind of info Arte would run and make a new post of, but PS3 Bayonetta is being annihilated in the US by the superior 360 version (last time I checked they were something like 90,000 units versus 160,000 respectively, and even in other regions the 360 is 80,000 against the PS3's 70,000).

"but they are pretty damn good at home electronics"

well, the still sucks when it comes to give people what they want, over here in northern Europe even cheap Korean and Malaysian company's is selling more LCD's than Sony... why? because they still run around whit their shitty proprietary formats on their amps and still got none region-free players.
their TV's support only PAL and not NTSC.
even cheap Hyundai LCD's got both PAL&NTSC support
and Sony LCD's cost 5-800 dollars more than a similar Samsung and Toshiba

and it doesn't help that it takes months for Sony to Repair stuff on (my PS3 has been to repair now in almost 4 months)
and its a pure hell to get them to repair anything on warranty even if you got prof that its not self-broken

and their loudspeakers and amps? well, its a good reason you almost don't get em here. we want loudspeakers that play's well and looks good and how can Sony's china-made "plastic-fantastic" compare against all those Danish, and Norwegian loudspeakers?
even British and American producers have better quality\price ration than Sony
and when it comes to amp's even my Chinese CAV A8M would play better than anything Sony have ever made up too twice the price, and it would not brake if it falls down 15cm

and THX support? forget it if you want a Sony

Dreamcast is vastly superior to the PS2 and XBox. The only reason it failed was because of the poor (ie non-existent) marketing.

The reason it failed was because of the cd based format when every other console took the step to DVD in an era which a dvd player cost 500$ and over .

Same reason for the N64 when cd based games where superior because of the ability to have CG and better soundtrack

Same reason that the xbox360 will be obsolete in 2 years . Rage at me if you want

Many Game Developers had said that the Sega Saturn wasn't the best develope games because of the Software conflicts they had programming games so Sega gone foward and release Sega Dreamcast. Game Developers reaction to the new system It was easy to make games on that system with no problems the reason why Sega Dreamcast fail was because It wasn't selling well enough that Sega gave up the on US Market yet they continued in the Japan untill 2005 I believe.

You mean like the Wii which doesn't even let you plug in DVDs without hacking it?

It doesn't matter how obsolete a console is. If we have to be honest, DC made the PS2/RRODBox obsolete before they were even released.
Sales and profits is the one and only thing that matters.

The x360 is not going anywhere. Current-gen consoles have so pathetically little RAM that it's virtually impossible to fill up a DVD with enough content in a typical development cycle.
Even for PC games which use several times larger meshes and textures, there haven't that much multi-DVD releases.

I'm not even going to bother describing to what lengths M$ execs would go to maintain their lead position. If they can sell a console that randomly stops working then a simple technical detail isn't going to be of much difference.

BR adoption has been slow as hell, and it doesn't seem to be picking up the pace any time soon.
People are happy with the DVD format.

Finally, regardless of what you may want to convince yourself, there is absolutely no way to know what's going to happen in 2 years. Put down the crystal ball.

The Dreamcast didn't use 700 MB CD-ROMs for its games, it used the propietary GD-ROM (Giga Byte Disc). The reason why they couldn't use DVD-ROM was because they couldn't possibly pay the royalties of the propietary format to its owners, among them Sony itself.

Also, basically what Myballz said, although SEGA was drowning in a pool of debt and had to discontinue the Dreamcast on all corners of the Earth, including Japan, in 2001, but third party development for the Naomi arcade board was so widespread, that it immediately translated to more licensed releases until even 2008.
