Lucky Star Ripped Off by Chinese

Lucky Star has finally had the unwelcome honour of being ripped off for use on a Chinese public service advertisement.

Admittedly, about the only surprising thing about this is that it took so long.

Chinese otaku are apparently disgusted, but it seems no amount of disgust, internal or external, will discourage China from doing what it apparently does best.

Actually its being used for non-profit public initiative purposes. I see nothing wrong with this, in fact I would be honoured by it if I were in this situation.

Will watching it also cause the fake protein crystals to form in our livers and kidneys and will we get lead and chromium poisoning as well from viewing it? Do we need to wear gas masks to be safe watching videos from China?

I'll attempt to translate those posts:

10:39 - We are so sorry for doing such a thing, as a representitive of entire China, I apologize. I will personally hunt down the person in charge of such foolishness and rape his son, eat his dog (I assume it's a "he" because we kill new born daughters) and burn his house.

11:52 - To sum it up, watch this Saturday Night Live skit. We love President Obama and we want his hugs and kisses and XXX's.

11:52 - Just end your misery. Of course, your country is so polluted that it's almost pathetic.

ok, so when a company in China rips something off, the whole country gets blamed. When a company in the U.S. rips something off, only the company is blamed. Is there something wrong here? screw the people who ripped it off but you idiots need to stop blaming every thing that a group does on the whole country. otherwise, a lot of other countries should have crap reputations just like China.

Trolling racists. You'd do well to ignore them.

Yes, China does rip off a lot of things. But who exactly is doing so? Would the average Chinese citizen even know about Lucky Star - aside from the typical otaku?

Whenever you hear about these stories in China - be it stolen copyright material, shoddy construction work, or toxic materials in toys, 19 out of 20 times it's the decision of either a single individual or a small group of people. While not much can be done about foreign copyright, those who fall into the latter categories get executed if they're caught (and most flee to Canada or the US for just this reason).

Regardless, it's just ignorant to criticize an entire population for the acts of a few, especially when the population is as big as China's.

Apparently, the illustrator for this commercial is a part-time doujin artist called Zixia (紫 sounds feminine, so I'm gonna use "her"), who she claims was hired/coerced by the Party bigwigs for her skills.

Here is her confession (with rough translation)

"I didn't want to do this at first... I just wanted to diligently do my proper work. I have absolutely no idea where those bigwigs learned of my drawings, who then just went and asked me to do this... I pretended that I only know how to do simple drawings and couldn't do Flash... They insisted on me doing this, so I had no choice but to give them these sketches for post production. If I told them I can do Flash, then they'll probably ask me to do the animation and voices as well... In such an industry, you gotta keep a low profile. Even if you're talented, you have to pretend you aren't, or you'll end up being worked to death. "

Now I'll be damned, the bloody encoding for Chinese simplified characters that I copied and pasted didn't work. Oh well, at least the (rough) translation's intact.

Didn't realize until now as for some odd reason, my posts are sometimes held back by the spam filter, thus the delay.

This is not the fault of the Chinese people.
This is the Chinese government's fault.
We can make our own animation, but we are controlled by Chinese government[usually].
so,I want to say sorry to the people whose works are copied.
Excuse us!This is not the result we want.

I'm well aware it's the government's fault, it's really not like the people have too much of a choice in this manner that much.. Sure there are exceptions to these rules but yeah, I have faith that not all chinese people are like this or support this sorta thing but hey, atleast it's anime.. XP

The commercial is about "Civilized lifestyle Begin With Me". It suppose to promote the practice of good manners & upholding high morality, by reduce unnecessary loud noises in public area.

Yet, the commercial itself committed an even worst crime: Plagiarism!!! This is the hypocrisies of China Government's regarding morality.

No I don't pirate my internet, I do however enjoy testing things before I decide if i'll buy it.

What about steam? Do you think if steam ever got closed down all their DRM would magically disappear? Nope all the games people bought over steam would be useless.

I'm sure you've stolen things off the internet with and without knowing it, so stop whining.

Piracy and making a profit from piracy are two very different things.

Fansubs have increased knowledge of these animes to regions japan doesn't really care about sending anime to, despite the publishers whining about how fansubs steal there pretend money to a region they never bothered to care about.

But I don't appreciate people who just take take take and never give anything back to the creators.
