A 16-year-old girl who became pregnant after being violated has been sentenced to a whipping by a fatwa, with the alleged rapist being pardoned and the girl’s father being fined.
The girl, a resident of a Bangladesh village, was married off and subsequently divorced after medical tests revealed she was already pregnant; this was apparently the reason for her being married off in the first place.
She claimed she had been violated by a 20-year-old fellow villager, but had felt such shame that she was unable to report the outrage.
Village elders met, and opted to settle the matter in a suitably Islamic fashion: they issued a fatwa demanding the girl be held in isolation by her family until she was submitted to 101 lashes; they also fined the girl’s father and threatened him with ostracism if his family refused to pay.
Finally, seeing the obvious injustice of a man being punished for rape, they pardoned the man responsible.
Bangladeshi courts have previously ordered that such extra-judicial punishments be restrained, but local police did nothing to prevent the girl being whipped; similar verdicts are reported throughout the region.
