Sony Delays PS3 Motion Controller

ps3-motion-controller.jpg

Sony’s rather suggestive PS3 motion controller, uncharitably thought by many to be a shameless knock-off of the Wiimote and Project Natal, has been delayed.

Sony’s bosses put it thus:

“So as to ensure as broad a spectrum of customers are able to enjoy the controller, we have decided to delay release until autumn 2010 to ensure a broad variety of titles are available.”

This appears to be a coded admission that Sony has been lax in developing enough party games to support sales of the device.

Sony’s 2010 “killer lineup” for the controller is as follows (some without firm titles yet):

Ape Escape

“Jinki”

“Machi Suberi”

“Sing and Draw”

“Champions of Time”

“Motion Party”

“The Shoot”

“Tower”

Mr. Pain

Flowery

Hustler King

High Velocity Bowling

EyePet

A powerful lineup indeed.

this wasn't any surprise, and microsoft will push natal on the shelves no matter how bugged it is. though how big an eyesore this thing is making i'm going to say microsofts is better.

i don't care about gameplay it's just not a clown nose on a wiimote.

It's just that if this one had vibration, it'd be fuckin nice anyways.

I hate to have see Sony fall lower than they already were having to submit to the success of casual gaming through the use of things like this. But frankly, do we fucking care?

I think you're missing that they have a game coming out called "Mr. Pain", for the controller that looks like it should be shoved up someones bum.

Layout looks like crap, they are doing the same shit that fucked up the PSP Go, who the fuck is seriously on their layout team, they cannot design for tuppence.

I think they should scrap this altogether and start making monster hunter tri for the ps3.

While waiting for variety of it's game, maybe they should spend more time to change their design for this wiimote wannabe first.
    It's ugly.

    Btw, Ape Escape DO WANT!!

Everything boils down to sales at the end of the day. It is which company getting the equation right. Until the product is actually out and being tested, no one really knows whether it is going to be the next thing after the PS2 controllers.

I don't think MS will put Project Natal on the shelves if it doesn't work how they want it to. They simply can't afford making any big mistakes with this as it is their biggest project for the xbox to date. If they mess this up they might lose millions on potentional customers

This is a terrible mistake on Sony's part. I expect both this and project Natal will cost around $100, so getting the money-tight young adults and allowance relying kids to buy their product first will be essential. If they don't get this out first, they'll need a massive media campaign and a great line up to beat an Early start by Microsoft.(could be 1 month ahead) The upside is that Project Natal likely won't have any new innovations for First Person Shooters, which are the 360's best sellers.
Just from a technical standpoint, I'd side with Sony's motion controller. Sony's device is like an improved version of Wii's motion plus that's attached to a Superior console. Also, since a lot of people commenting on this page are wondering about the pink bulb. It changes color. The bulbs glow so that your PlayStation eye can track it.

P.S. Although it might be too early to speculate, I wouldn't put it past Microsoft to bundle Natal with Halo Reach.

Well, actually Microsoft will release Natal on holidays 2010, which I assume is sometime after "autumn 2010". So, Sony is still releasing their motion sensing shit earlier than the competition.

When Sony Say's Autumn, I would guess early November. When Microsoft says Holiday season, I would Guess Early December. It wouldn't be much of a rush for Microsoft to make a release 3-4 weeks earlier, especially if they have the same Quality control as the first 360 hardware.

it's because they're trying to avoid copying nintendo 100% of the way.

it could also be that sony enjoys making the ugliest fucking prototypes in the gaming industry. remember what the original ps3 controllers looked like?

I've actually held one of those prototypes. It was actually - dare I say, comfortable.

Always? The fuck are you talking about? I think you're confusing Sony with it's competition.
Considering the PS1 was competing with that unholdible fuck that is he N64 controller and the PS2 with the slightly less shit GC one and the worst one ever, the goliath Xbox one.

Agreed, the N64 and GC controllers were horrible to say the least in comparison to the PS1 controller. But I gotta say the most comfortable controller I've ever used was the original "goliath" Xbox controller, the smaller models that came after it just didn't fit my hand as well. To me, the PS2, PS3, Wiimote, Wii classic controller and Xbox 360 controllers don't come even close to that level of WIN.

In my opinion the gamecube controller is the best and most comfortable controller I've used ever.

Here are my controller ratings of those I've used, 1 being the lowest and 10 being the highest.

Snes (8) - It was good, but there is a lack of things to grip onto.

N64 (7) - I've held a lot worse controllers, I never used to hold it by the middle spike as sometimes recommended, that just felt weird.

GC (10) - So far the nicest, most comfortable controller I've handled yet(I still use it plus I'll eventually get a PC connector for it)

WiiMote (7) It's not as bad as people like to go on about, I've played brawl quite well using this, but the better combination is with the nunchuk, the D-Pad is too pointy and could bruise finger tips after long use(from experience).

PSX/PS2/PS3 (5) - It's not the worst controller I've used but it gave me some hand cramps, I never really liked this controller much.

360 (6) - Only slightly better than the playstation controller but it still feels strange, maybe I need to use it more.

Saitek Cyborg Rumble Pad (9) - It looks quite similar to a 360 controller but feels a lot more solid, it's quite nice to use and the changable D-Pad and L-Joystick is a nice feature.

Logitech Rumblepad 2 (9) - You can't usually go wrong with logitech, a lot of people compare this controller to the playstation dual shock controller, but I disagree, this controller feels much nicer, it has extra bulk in the right places so it fills out in your hands nicely.

I disliked the C one for having twice the directional input than was ever needed.

D-pad was never used and the C stick was the same as the right thumb buttons.

Z button was kinda wierd as well and the shoulder buttons was like plundgers, not designed to rapid sue at all. hey had a nice pressure sensitivity though.

Nice to hold, still some pretty stupid design features.

im suprised to here someone give the psx/ps2 controllers a 5 @_@. wtf??. wat kinda hands do you have. the playstation controller was revolutionary. so many conpanies, gaming and non gaming copied off of its design. im talkin pc's, remote control cars ect.

i agree about the gc controller. so awesome and well done. its a shame how that system went down the way it did.

This controller is meant to be paired with the PS3 eye to calibrate your motions. When multiple controllers are to be used, each of them needs to have a different color.

They should have just gone with the Wii design with IR. This wand thing just looks ugly and silly. I am not gonna get this unless there are going to be games like Dream C Club with motion control.
