Reimu & Chibimari’s Desktop Dancing

A pint-sized Hakurei Reimu dances fantastically on an otaku destktop whilst chibi Marisa, or “Chibimari,” charmingly does a little ditty in these excellent MADs, made with MikuMiku Dance (a free tool for choreographing CG animated anime characters) and ARToolKit (a free tool for making Augmented Reality virtual figurines).
Such impressively fluid animation manages to make traditionally animated scenes of motion look embarrassingly backward (or at least the majority of cheap ones), and the ability of these characters to inhabit the real world opens even more possibilities.
The fact that both tools and models are freely available and rapidly improving in quality may indeed have some interesting implications in years to come.

What's the platform thing that Reimu's dancing on called? That black-white card thing?
That's the tracking target the program uses to keep the model in the right place throughout the matchmove.
AR - Augmented Reality.
Yup, the target is reminiscent of the PsP game "invizimals" which uses the same sort of thing, you can see the animals on the target with the PsP camera, a sort of high tech Pokemon game.
The first time I saw AR glyphs like that was a demo for software called "Black Magic" close to a decade ago. They seem to have become pretty much the standard though since they're so easy to see on a camera.
It's like your own fairy dancing in front of you...

Is there a way for mo-capped choreography to be imported to MMD...?
I'm sure there is, it's just too expensive for most "productive otaku" that do these videos.
As someone who has to clean mocap data, it's also no fucking fun at all.
Anyway, I haven't looked at the MMD program but if there's a way to import fbx or ma or 3ds or whatnot then there shouldn't be any problems. But if you can't import or if animation has to be done in MMD (plus rigging and whatnot; I'm going to assume that the models were done in metasequoia from their look) then it'll be an issue.

It's basically a rangefinder that also works with a program to display graphically the results of the range.

You almost forgot one of the best parts: shades with OLED screens would be able to display a different image for each eye, which is the basis for stereoscopic 3D technology.
So AR + OLED glasses + Stereoscopy = Absolutely perfect virtual 3D
And to think, this could easily be done with today's technology if you had enough money and developed some simple software for it.

When I first saw that Chibimari video I was so amazed by the fluid animation I doubted the fact that it was made on MMD. I've seen quite a few dance vids, but this one stands out the most. It feels so natural...until she has a complete motionless stop at the end...

I've always loved MMD. Now to figure out how to use it...
Both were extremely fluid, though I liked the Chibimari one the best.
However... I noticed some (no pun intended) artifacting, in that Chibimari's arms punched up through her hat sometimes, rather than lifting the hat as they would in real life.
Still, they were very good.
Both were really Good I wish He didn't use Hatsune Miku's voice though... It just doesn't fit Reimu... I think It's because I hear too much Miku anyway.
