A pint-sized Hakurei Reimu dances fantastically on an otaku destktop whilst chibi Marisa, or “Chibimari,” charmingly does a little ditty in these excellent MADs, made with MikuMiku Dance (a free tool for choreographing CG animated anime characters) and ARToolKit (a free tool for making Augmented Reality virtual figurines).
Such impressively fluid animation manages to make traditionally animated scenes of motion look embarrassingly backward (or at least the majority of cheap ones), and the ability of these characters to inhabit the real world opens even more possibilities.
The fact that both tools and models are freely available and rapidly improving in quality may indeed have some interesting implications in years to come.

I knew I should have downloaded this one from Youtube before they removed it.
Though this technology has existed for a while, lack of adoption for wide-range application leaves me perplexed. If an “amateur” is able to perform interesting and quite useful tasks using augmented reality (AR), it leaves me wondering why hasn’t this become common today.
For now, AR is displayed on monitors via visual feedback from an external sensor (camera). With today’s mobile technology and as exemplified by this vid demonstration, I could see this being available in mobile devices with built-in camera and screen such as mobile phones, for endless hours of gaming fun, location-based GPS information databank, etc.

Anyway, NICE FIND, but Touhou’s Reimu X iM@S’ “Go My Way”? o_0
The first one looked great. I thought the second looked strange, like she was on fast forward, and weird when her hands would half-touch her clothes as they cut through them… also, the whole video was just Marisa dancing. I’ll stick to 2D for now since it is more flexible…

I think this is one of the most amazing things I have ever seen done with a computer. I had never even heard of AR untill now.
