2ch believes it has successfully divided anime otaku into two distinct types:
Type A:
A person who simply enjoys “anime.”
Is proud of Japan’s anime.
Evaluates anime based on direction, voice acting, art, etc.
Hates shallow anime with no real content.
Story emphasis >>>>> Moe anime.
A recent example would Higashi no Eden. Fans of anime like Lain or Ghost in the Shell would probably be this kind.
Type B:
A person who simply enjoys “characters.”
Will watch an anime if it includes cute or beautiful characters.
Doesn’t care if story is awful, as long as the characters are of interest.
Evaluates anime based on which seiyuu are in it and what the characters look like.
Loves moe elements. Doesn’t like complex anime.
The otaku the media picks up on are usually this kind.
Doesn’t know that much about anime and so is often criticised as by Type A otaku.
However, they make much better customers than the more discerning Type A otaku.
Recently there has been a huge increase in anime targeted at Type B otaku.
People who like K-ON!, Queen’s Blade, Strike Witches and so on would be in this class.
In fairness “Type A” seems more a description of anime “fans” than anime “otaku,” as most of the irrational and obsessive characteristics generally associated with otaku seem to be absent; on the other hand, it is in the hearts of “Type B” otaku that the seeds of the moe boom were sown…
Anime lovers will inevitably have to ask “Which type am I?”

Put me down for TYPE A , please!
I admit it, I'm a snob.
Okay, I confess... I'm a closet TYPE B.
Which I think = TYPE H.
Hah!
My blood group is AB.
Guess its already in my blood =)
I'm 0- IRL, but AB in this case.
>crackle< Type A animufag reporting in! Over! >buzz<
2ch doesn't realize there is a Type C - a hybrid or "AB" Type.
Obviously shows with great art style, plot, voice acting and direction are worth watching.
Even if you enjoy shows with these traits, it does not mean you're also incapable of watching shows without them.
There's a difference between judging quality and entertainment. I know that moe-anime is generally shitty, but I still find it entertaining. Just got to shut your brain off while watching.
Exactly, Chris.
Evaluates anime either based on direction, voice acting, art, or based on which seiyuu are in it and what the characters looks like.
Doesn’t care if story is awful, as long as the characters are of interest, and doesn't care if the art isn't MOE but has good story.
Loves moe elements and story.
What does that made me?
type A doesn't have to hate MOE anime.
besides, this is purely generalization for "type B" stereotype otakus. in which 2ch tries to troll them, yes. you. those think there's such thing as "type B", you've been trolled. you fail.
Chris is wrong.
If you evaluate a anime at all for its story/direction/art you are automatically a type A. It basically means that you are serious about Anime as a art form and require a well thought product in order to enjoy it.
If you are capable of enjoying any generic crap show like bleach or naruto then you are and will never be a Type A. Because that means you do not really value story/direction/art/sound.
This does not mean that a part of the show can not compensate for its lacking in a specific category to make it viewable but to think that you can be an objective A and a ignorant B is pretentious, showing that deep down you have problems with inadequacy and need to make yourself feel like the "generalist" in all facets of your life.
But get real. People can't be everything. There's always something lost.
I enjoy anime for story, direction, art, and sound. I would consider myself a Type A, however I still watch shows like Bleach and Naruto. Why? Because to not finish what I start puts a bad taste in my mouth. I prefer animes like Umineko, Higurashi, Ghost in the Shell, and even Hokuto no Ken.
I know someone who is a Type B. I just can't understand why they like animes like K-ON!, Lucky Star, and Queen's Blade where only the characters seem to matter. I'm the kind of person that will always finish something before saying that I didn't like it. Lucky Star was the most garbage anime I've ever finished. You can't classify people with merely two groups when almost everyone's different.
What? Are you fucking stupid, Anon?
If someone enjoys Bleach/Naruto that means they don't enjoy a good plot?
Go fucking watch it before judging it.
Just because it's generic and popular doesn't mean it's not good, it means it's good enough to become insanely popular with a specific group of people.
In fact, Bleach, for one, is something that I can say mostly every person will enjoy watching every now and then if they give it a fair chance.
Anyway, all this bullshit about high-quality and low-quality anime is nothing but bullshit.
It depends on your taste.
"Different Anon Btw"
You have probably continued watching those two animes prolong their season, however it seems that you've failed to make the match between the previous episodes (1-50 or 60) and episodes that continue to be called "Fillers"; In terms of storyline, artistic ability and run ons. If you haven't seen a few episodes of lastest Bleach episodes, it seems they have yet to be on par with the manga, not only does the anime always redirect the course of story, it seems to add an extra filler which was used during season 5 (Bount Assault on Soul Society), a few random extra episodes placed into different season, and the Zanpakuto episodes. The artistic ability and use of frames they created have lessened. Giving it a cheap look. Combat as become more like DBZ (flying *must remind you that in older episodes during the fight between Byakuya Kuchiki and Ichigo, he used a talisman that he received to fly*, everyone can use Hoho (flash step) and they also collapse into something, be it building or rock or ground.)Given that Ive managed to watch the whole 14 season up till now. Id rate it 6/10. Manga is much better.
Now lets go to Naruto, a very popular anime indeed for its comedic outputs, ero jokes and interesting fighting concept. However, again it also runs through the same phase as Bleach: the Fillers; Uneven storyline and plot, lazy run on episodes, overused puns and jokes, repetitive techniques that are only improved by a change in look, or just a pathetic over hyped combo.
As far as storyline goes though, its very well placed if they did not have the 100 episodes of garbage and would have made for an interesting twist early in the anime. Otherwise, the whole anime is half decent, Id give it a 6.9/10. Given that the length of the anime is extremely ongoing, just so that the writers, producers, manufacturers, artists could all receive an extra some of salary per month.
You're absolutely right, however, that's why I will finish them. After I watched through all that filler, I truly would have wasted my time if I just gave up.
Chris' "Type C" okaku would apply to anime like Unicorns apply to animals. Sure, they could be out there, and if you claimed to see one, I can't technically refute you, but I have yet to see anything that fills both categories.
I'm not sure which I am. I don't even classify myself as an otaku. I just enjoy watching anime and the things I look for in anime is a plot preferably good and interesting (there are exceptions since I love Lucky Star which is the animeversion of Seinfield) good, fluid animation (there are also exceptions to this) and interesting characters with depth. That's about it. The main thing I look for is if I like it and want to watch it. Certain things pique my interest but I have to like or love the show to keep watching. I think I might be a Type B because I don't really care about plot. I'm more of a character person and if I had to choose between wonderful plot but horrible characters or crappy nearly non-existent plot but great characters I'd choose the latter. Though there is a limit to how bad a plot I can take.
if someone enjoys bleach and naruto, they are either 13 years old or a worthless manchild
man child >>>>>>>>>> virgin
I'm Type A and if you don't like it ... I don't care. :P lol
Go and Cry. XD
Both would apply to me as well, although I tend to avoid typical shounen faire, and overly girlie stuff.
Im type O
Have equal number of traits of both
and have most of the animes from both listed as my favorites
My blood group is B. I was mainly B type otaku before, but i am leaning more towards A type lately. Is my blood type shifting?
I'm AB as well, but I do get an infusion of H every once in a while.
I'm a type A animu fag... I hate moe...
Yes you are a Fag
type A here... i'd take an interesting plot over big-eyed lolis. i'd choose akagi or paranoia agent over *insert random thin-plot big-eyed-loli anime here*
I'm 0+ ...soo that basically means I don't give a hoot, as I watch Anime on Sentiment then anything else
(i.e. "Ooooh, look at the Pretty Colors (@.@)")
But seriously I would normally fall into Type B ...if I couldn't say that I found "Ergo Proxy" intensely captivating.
And I could fall into category A ...if I didn't actually think that "Queen's Blade" has a rather well-formed Plot and a credible (not Believable) Story to it :p
Used to be type B, lately I can say myself as a type A. Maybe because I don't think anime these days got any real plot and such....and most new anime seems to be just repeating itself from the old ones.
agreed
used to be type A, then everything turned into fucking K-On so it kind of FORCED me into B. though I did enjoy both K-On and Strike Witches
I would say Im in between, but I would rather say Im not an otaku (compared to all those in recent posts)
Yeap, I'm definitely A.
I don't even own a single figurine or anything. I just simply enjoy watching anime.
you do know the recent posts are all biased aiming to degrade "otaku"
I'd enjoy Higashi no eden and queen's blade... which type I'm?
Type C...? or there is a Type like the Blood A-B?
A real otaku watch every kind of anime
type A here. mostly.
Type b if concerning Railgun
Type O. Otaku hehehe
yeah think there should be a C since alot of us if we are horny we watch B and if we are serous we watch A just like i watch serous movies and porn
I'm type B.
The problem is that for me good plot = interesting characters; moe != character. If I had a young dog, and it acted moe I might say that it has some character, but considering moe traits as deep character for people is just silly. I really don't understand how anyone can say that for instance GitS had more shallow characters than K-On... O_o
"yeah think there should be a C since alot of us if we are horny we watch B and if we are serous we watch A just like i watch serous movies and porn"
You sir, are a legend.
"Yeap, I'm definitely A.
I don't even own a single figurine or anything. I just simply enjoy watching anime."
this, so very much this
Type O = epic win
im a type AB >_>
I wonder how type O will be
I am and always will be Type A... I guess it runs in the blood *cough* A+ =/
I wonder what runs under the Type O otaku...
an otaku obsessed with drawing technique and constantly does renditions of it and posts it on Pixiv/Deviant Art?
@the above anon
That's a good point!! I highly believe there is such a breed!
I can think of several people, including myself who are a part of it too! We're definitely our own unique breed of otaku.
When it comes to anime we watch though.... hmmmm... I think it's really varied. It might depend on what the otaku in question likes to draw. For instance a type O who likes drawing robots will tune in to watch just about any show with robots or sci-fi in it. Regardless of genre.
This isn't entirely right but it's as accurate as it gets with letter based generalizations.
It doesn't have to have an AAA plot or 'moe' characters to attract me. I would say I am Type C for Comedy/Compelling. If it makes me laugh or has a somewhat interesing story, I'll take it.
agreed and type a (didn't watch a single anime listed for type b)
Shame on you!!!!
I'm more in between. I just balance it since am open to anything with some redeeming value.
so would that make you a two form?
I'm TYPE A!!!!!!!!
Seriously... I hate force fed fanservice crap... I appreciate production values and how much effort is poured onto the anime itself. And for that I really admire those studios that done an amazing job.
Then again... I have TYPE B inside me also...
I enjoyed K-ON! for it's catchy tunes.
Majority I'm type A! YEAAAAAAAA!
Although I think some people are gonna say I'm TYPE B since there's K-ON! in my post.....
If you enjoyed K-ON then you are definitely Type B, you hypocrite.
I think I'm Type A —
GitS
Princess Mononoke
Ergo Proxy
Higashi no Eden
Noir
RahXephon
K-ON
...
I'M FINE.
K-ON definitely qualifies you for type b, there's nothing original about it, however, it is full of cute high school girls
I think I am both type A and type H
so I am Type AH?
AH-------!!
wheres type C? combination of A & B oh noes
This place loves shit like k-on, railgun, etc., more then ones that are actually good.
Don't fucking start posting how you're all A's when there's thousands upon thousands of comments along the lines of
"MOE! a new k-on season! epic fucking win!"
Bunch of garbage for otaku's and under 12yo's..
True.
But there are a few real type A's around.
I fucking hate all moe. Yup even railgun.
Haven't watched past episode 1.
Never seen K-on! or even Strike Bitches.
Last anime I watched was Darker than Black 2.
I hope this moe shit goes away soon...
Shame on you!
Sir 11:22 anon, you are falling into the other extreme where your irrational hatred for any moe aspect in a series makes you instantly hate it. You claim you hate K-on and Strike Wicthes yet you also confess to have never seen any of both, therefore you don't know what "redeeming" qualities such series might have. How can you hate them when you have not experienced any of those series first hand? Do you just let others' opinion become your own?
You would do well to remember Sun Tzu: "Know your enemy, and you shall win a hundred battles"
My is Type B
I wonder why ....
;D
its more like US AND THEM instead of a proper classification
I'm A, but of course will never let the pass the lolis, specially if they are naked and hot!
That makes you type B.
Or at least type L (lolicon), which would be worse than type B...
I LIKE BOTH
-idort
Type A
Though I did engoy Strike Witches for its Millitary style, including costumes, armaments and its flying mecha girl idea.
oh great by this criteria, I fit into both,...
though I prefer anime with nicer artistic leeway and stories, i.e. Denno Coli.
then the issue is moot, because it doesn't address other kinds of otaku,... namely tech otaku, or gun otaku or car otaku or motorcycle otaku etc, etc, etc......
sighs
i am closer to A. i wanted to watch strike witches and queen's blade, but they were too boring, cliched, and ultimately pointless. k-on was ok, but i was hoping for something more along the lines of BECK. either way, i actually finished k-on.
I'm Type AB.
