“The Two Types of Anime Otaku”

liberty-leading-the-people-otaku-parody.jpg

2ch believes it has successfully divided anime otaku into two distinct types:

Type A:

A person who simply enjoys “anime.”

Is proud of Japan’s anime.

Evaluates anime based on direction, voice acting, art, etc.

Hates shallow anime with no real content.

Story emphasis >>>>> Moe anime.

A recent example would Higashi no Eden. Fans of anime like Lain or Ghost in the Shell would probably be this kind.

Type B:

A person who simply enjoys “characters.”

Will watch an anime if it includes cute or beautiful characters.

Doesn’t care if story is awful, as long as the characters are of interest.

Evaluates anime based on which seiyuu are in it and what the characters look like.

Loves moe elements. Doesn’t like complex anime.

The otaku the media picks up on are usually this kind.

Doesn’t know that much about anime and so is often criticised as by Type A otaku.

However, they make much better customers than the more discerning Type A otaku.

Recently there has been a huge increase in anime targeted at Type B otaku.

People who like K-ON!, Queen’s Blade, Strike Witches and so on would be in this class.

In fairness “Type A” seems more a description of anime “fans” than anime “otaku,” as most of the irrational and obsessive characteristics generally associated with otaku seem to be absent; on the other hand, it is in the hearts of “Type B” otaku that the seeds of the moe boom were sown…

Anime lovers will inevitably have to ask “Which type am I?”

    2ch doesn't realize there is a Type C - a hybrid or "AB" Type.

Obviously shows with great art style, plot, voice acting and direction are worth watching.
Even if you enjoy shows with these traits, it does not mean you're also incapable of watching shows without them.

There's a difference between judging quality and entertainment. I know that moe-anime is generally shitty, but I still find it entertaining. Just got to shut your brain off while watching.

Doesn’t care if story is awful, as long as the characters are of interest, and doesn't care if the art isn't MOE but has good story.

type A doesn't have to hate MOE anime.

besides, this is purely generalization for "type B" stereotype otakus. in which 2ch tries to troll them, yes. you. those think there's such thing as "type B", you've been trolled. you fail.

    Chris is wrong.

If you evaluate a anime at all for its story/direction/art you are automatically a type A. It basically means that you are serious about Anime as a art form and require a well thought product in order to enjoy it.

If you are capable of enjoying any generic crap show like bleach or naruto then you are and will never be a Type A. Because that means you do not really value story/direction/art/sound.

This does not mean that a part of the show can not compensate for its lacking in a specific category to make it viewable but to think that you can be an objective A and a ignorant B is pretentious, showing that deep down you have problems with inadequacy and need to make yourself feel like the "generalist" in all facets of your life.

But get real. People can't be everything. There's always something lost.

I enjoy anime for story, direction, art, and sound. I would consider myself a Type A, however I still watch shows like Bleach and Naruto. Why? Because to not finish what I start puts a bad taste in my mouth. I prefer animes like Umineko, Higurashi, Ghost in the Shell, and even Hokuto no Ken.

I know someone who is a Type B. I just can't understand why they like animes like K-ON!, Lucky Star, and Queen's Blade where only the characters seem to matter. I'm the kind of person that will always finish something before saying that I didn't like it. Lucky Star was the most garbage anime I've ever finished. You can't classify people with merely two groups when almost everyone's different.

What? Are you fucking stupid, Anon?
If someone enjoys Bleach/Naruto that means they don't enjoy a good plot?
Go fucking watch it before judging it.
Just because it's generic and popular doesn't mean it's not good, it means it's good enough to become insanely popular with a specific group of people.
In fact, Bleach, for one, is something that I can say mostly every person will enjoy watching every now and then if they give it a fair chance.

Anyway, all this bullshit about high-quality and low-quality anime is nothing but bullshit.
    It depends on your taste.

    "Different Anon Btw"
You have probably continued watching those two animes prolong their season, however it seems that you've failed to make the match between the previous episodes (1-50 or 60) and episodes that continue to be called "Fillers"; In terms of storyline, artistic ability and run ons. If you haven't seen a few episodes of lastest Bleach episodes, it seems they have yet to be on par with the manga, not only does the anime always redirect the course of story, it seems to add an extra filler which was used during season 5 (Bount Assault on Soul Society), a few random extra episodes placed into different season, and the Zanpakuto episodes. The artistic ability and use of frames they created have lessened. Giving it a cheap look. Combat as become more like DBZ (flying *must remind you that in older episodes during the fight between Byakuya Kuchiki and Ichigo, he used a talisman that he received to fly*, everyone can use Hoho (flash step) and they also collapse into something, be it building or rock or ground.)Given that Ive managed to watch the whole 14 season up till now. Id rate it 6/10. Manga is much better.

Now lets go to Naruto, a very popular anime indeed for its comedic outputs, ero jokes and interesting fighting concept. However, again it also runs through the same phase as Bleach: the Fillers; Uneven storyline and plot, lazy run on episodes, overused puns and jokes, repetitive techniques that are only improved by a change in look, or just a pathetic over hyped combo.
As far as storyline goes though, its very well placed if they did not have the 100 episodes of garbage and would have made for an interesting twist early in the anime. Otherwise, the whole anime is half decent, Id give it a 6.9/10. Given that the length of the anime is extremely ongoing, just so that the writers, producers, manufacturers, artists could all receive an extra some of salary per month.

Chris' "Type C" okaku would apply to anime like Unicorns apply to animals. Sure, they could be out there, and if you claimed to see one, I can't technically refute you, but I have yet to see anything that fills both categories.

I'm not sure which I am. I don't even classify myself as an otaku. I just enjoy watching anime and the things I look for in anime is a plot preferably good and interesting (there are exceptions since I love Lucky Star which is the animeversion of Seinfield) good, fluid animation (there are also exceptions to this) and interesting characters with depth. That's about it. The main thing I look for is if I like it and want to watch it. Certain things pique my interest but I have to like or love the show to keep watching. I think I might be a Type B because I don't really care about plot. I'm more of a character person and if I had to choose between wonderful plot but horrible characters or crappy nearly non-existent plot but great characters I'd choose the latter. Though there is a limit to how bad a plot I can take.

That's a good point!! I highly believe there is such a breed!

I can think of several people, including myself who are a part of it too! We're definitely our own unique breed of otaku.

When it comes to anime we watch though.... hmmmm... I think it's really varied. It might depend on what the otaku in question likes to draw. For instance a type O who likes drawing robots will tune in to watch just about any show with robots or sci-fi in it. Regardless of genre.

This isn't entirely right but it's as accurate as it gets with letter based generalizations.
