Sony’s PS3 has outsold the Xbox 360 in the core market of the US this Christmas, a major coup for Sony as it tussles with Microsoft for the much coveted status of being the losers in second place.
The sales for 11/29/09 – 1/2/10, as reported by NPD:
PlayStation 3 – 1.36M
Xbox 360 – 1.31M
Nintendo DS – 3.31M
PSP – 654.7K
Wii – 3.81M
Not entirely surprisingly, Nintendo’s Wii easily manages to exceed the combined sales of both PS3 and Xbox 360, although looking at the top selling games for the Christmas period rather affirms the notion that the Wii is operating in a completely different market:

In Europe/US the 360 is far enough ahead as it is, the PS3 is not ahead and likely won't be for some time if it ever gets that far.
Look at the numbers again. PS3 is in front in Europe. When was the last time you checked the numbers? Three years ago?

I noticed a lot of people were getting bored of their 360 and sold it for either a Wii or PS3. My friend, being one of those people, said that developers aren't delivering like they used to in many aspects, like online features and games. I kind of see that recently, and unless Microsoft do something, they're gonna be behind very soon.
I really don't know why people are surprised by this. Most people who wanted a Xbox 360 got one. In the previous years, it's been one of the most accessable consoles in the US due to it's price being lower than the PS3, and having a wider reach than the Wii.
I know it's only speculation, but thanks to the drop in price and the slim PS3, a large majority of the *new* PS3 owners that got one for or around christmas are those that already have a Xbox 360 and/or Wii. It's just Sony dragging it's ass behind trying to catch up from the last few years of being behind Nintendo and Microsoft and saying they're not out yet.

Not surprising for the PS3 to win the 360 in Christmas, especially with that new design and price point.
What surprises me is the number of MW2 copies sold on the PS3 and the 360. The difference is not that much, considering the userbase for the 360 is more than the PS3 in the US by at least a few million.
Looks piracy is killing the 360 games sales as well, and the developers are benefiting from the PS3 game sales :D

Every year I hear about the games Sony is coming out with for the PS3 but most of them are shitty when they come out. GOW3 is PS3's only hope. lol good luck.
The one thing I dislike about about Sony is the Japan first policy of the system. Last time I checked the bulk of their consoles are sold off shores. North America has what, about triple the consoles. Why does everyone else have to wait for releases or in particular the new item that turns a ps3 into a dvr, are simultaneous releases not option for them. Well here's to both the 360 and PS3 for both remaining competitive.
Actually, PlayTV - the equivalent in Europe has been out for quite a while now. The reason why the DVR add-on hasn't made it to the US is because of possible copyright issues. Major studios are not going to be too happy when people can record TV shows in full HD and in a format that is ready to be distributed digitally. They won't be able to sell the show in DVD/BD. TiVo pays good money in royalty to provide similar service. Sony will have to work out a deal with the studios for it to materialize.

No RPG has sold over 1 million copies on the PS3. The PS3 is for shooter fans. Sony has been pushing shooters with Resistance, Killzone 2, Uncharted 1&2, InFamous, and Ratchet & Clank.
Sony royally screwed all the fans of every other genre that made the PS2 a success. After Grand Theft Auto, most of the PS2's top selling games were RPG and racing games, not shooters. They've left gamers like me stranded.
and that is only in japan alone compare it with LO in x360 that only sell around 800k,
also LO is sold far below S04, ToV, and Blue dragon in Japan!
ToV also sold more than 1 million copies. Pretty sure that if you actually look, there are other titles, too.
