The older fanservice was better.
I remember watching Ranma 1/2 which featured topless girls with nipples in a relatively mainstream anime. Now, that level of fanservice is reserved for "late night" anime, and many fanservice-oriented shows don't deliver the goods.
The best part about older anime was, some of the shows with fanservice were actually respectable. You could make an argument to your family and/or girlfriend to justify watching Ranma 1/2. There is no way you can explain watching Kodomo no Jikan.
Let me guess... you haven't watched Kodomo no Jikan, right?
It has lots of drama and deals with some actually deep issues that you wouldn't even think of seeing in Ranma or some romantic comedy anime like that.
Actually, the way it uses comedy and even fanservice as part of it makes it really interesting.
If you have watched it, then it's your fault not being able to see beyond that.
Oh, and I can explain watching it: it's entertaining.
