Funimation’s impending English language release of top not-pantsu anime Strike Witches, complete with dub, has attracted note for its campily effected attempt to explain the central premise of the series, visible below:
The famous “They’re not pantsu so it’s not embarrassing!” slogan of the series seems understandably to have not survived translation intact.
The English version, a two disc box set containing the entire 300 minute series will be due at the end of March, at a price sure to make Japanese fans apoplectic with rage ($45, versus 6 DVDs at about $70 each in Japan).
The official site resides here, though sadly Funimation insists on making it inaccessible to anyone not in God’s chosen land.
When asked about the matter of censorship, Funimation confirmed that it will be completely uncensored and identical to the decidedly raunchy Japanese DVDs – expect to see more later.
Why? I think Funimation has been doing a great job. Lots of titles I like, and these compilations are great... I'm happy to see the end of $30.00 DVD's with only 3 episodes on it.
Yes, American prices for anime are lower than Japanese prices for anime. But American prices for anime are still higher than American prices for other TV shows. Outside of the hardcore fans, it's tough to get people to buy a 13 episode series for $50 when the general public can get an entire season of an American show for $30-$40.
Of course they are. It's called a contract/licensing agreement. They can't sell them at the same price as, let's say the most recent Batman series, because while they'd liek to, the studios would still like some money from the sales. Othewise, well, they wouldn't be whining about fansubs to the English-speaking world, now would they?
RightStuf is the best domestic release company around. They don't do a ton of titles but their Irresponsible Captain Tylor DVD boxed sets are phenomenal. I've never seen so much information on a series and translated interviews and booklets in a DVD boxed set that didn't cost a bazillion dollars for the limited edition version.
Anyone thought that he may not be from the US. Anyone who is not from the US has every reason to hate Funimation. They make some anime hard to find on the internet but they don't bring there DVD's in our countries so we can buy. In my country no one sells anime DVD. You can't even rent one.
I don't understand why sites like BakaBT can't just make a system where Funimation licensed anime are not aloud to download only in IP's coming from the US. WHY should i suffer from Funimation's licenses since they don't have any in my country?
Sorry for sounding insensitive but that's your problem with your country.
If FUNimation wants to give us the opportunity to pay good money for an anime we'll enjoy as opposed to letting freeloaders download it off some pirate space, I'll gladly let them.
You want it so bad, just get the DVD off eBay or wherever when it comes out. Hell, some Amazon market sellers will ship internationally.
Why should I suffer from your unwillingness to pay for anime?
Sort of. Maybe.
I didn't find the whole always present pantsu fanservice thing that appealing, they could have used nun dresses and I would have still watched it and mind you its one of my favorite anime, but then again, I already saw it I already have the blu ray subs and I won't bother with funimations pathetic dub.
Maybe they really do know who would buy it and that the whole pantsu deal would be a selling point for them.
Yeah, Funi has gotten better, although I'm sure most of us still won't be watching their dubs anytime soon. The worst part about Funi now is pretty much their advertising; their taglines and trailers suck ass.
So I'm guessing that you've never seen Strike Witches, because it is nothing like Code Geass.
Code Geass is about a pompous prince who gets the ability to mind fuck people into doin what he wants, then takes over the world and gets himself killed to create a better place for his crippled sister.
While Strike Witches is about aliens of some kind destroying a large portion of the planet during the time when WWII should have been goin on, and the military using magical girls to fight them off.
If I had to compare Strike Witches to anything it'd probably be Sky Girls, since they shared the premise of alien type things fucking up earth and young girls with mecha fightin em off.
More or less sounds bit of the same
Naked wars =]
apparently thats what us Americans are into...
Yeah trashy voice over for moe characters.
Don't knock it (this dubbing) if you haven't tried it.
Dubs aren't bad.
Most of them are just plain horrible.
I actually find the commercial extremely clever; appeals in a different sort of way.
I love this trailer. Funimation isn't stupid; they know why people will be watching this.
ok, but I dont like funimation
Why? I think Funimation has been doing a great job. Lots of titles I like, and these compilations are great... I'm happy to see the end of $30.00 DVD's with only 3 episodes on it.
I never understood this whining. Even when US prices were at their peak, we still were paying half of Japanese prices.

a 13 episode dvd set costs 50$ in the U.S??
Man that's so unfair, in Norway a 13 episode anime is usually priced at 80-90$ ;/
26 episode boxes are @ 120-ish USD.
Isn't that a bit of an old statement nowadays, of hating funimation just because it's funimation?
funimation has gone legit since the last 3 or 4 years. They probably make the highest quality domesticated anime DVDs.
At least its not 4kids..... grrrrr
Dub sucks, end of story

Dude, goto their website- You can see many of their New Animes (like "Spice & Wolf" dubbed) streamed ON-Line (or YouTube) for Free
What Spice & Wolf fan would watch the dub?
Horo > Holo
Because whore-o is better than Holo?:p
I believe it was announced before the dub that her name is Holo, by the creator.
The domestic companies don't usually make-up how to pronounce stuff. I don't like "Holo" either but that's what author told them they wanted it to be.
I still don't see what's so terrible about "Holo". I honestly don't.
The "r" was changed with an "l", it's serious business.

Frak, it didn't reply to where I wanted. Blast it all!
eBay isn't even necessary. Amazon ships internationally.
@giascle
Oxymoron detected
i do believe i will purchase this product.
Sort of. Maybe.

Is there Japanese voices with subs also? If yes, then this release is interesting.
It's hard to find modern anime that isn't. Amazon lists it as the following:
# Format: Color, DVD, NTSC, Subtitled, Widescreen
# Language: Japanese, English

That is some clever marketing.
The dub is probably shitty, but who in their right minds watches dubs? ^_^
Normal people.
They should mention that it's just a retelling of code geass with furries
So I'm guessing that you've never seen Strike Witches, because it is nothing like Code Geass.

Careful, while I see what you did there, you don't seem to know what a furry is. That could bite you in the ass some day, literally.
dumbass
I would have liked to hear more of the voices v..v to see if its a decent english dub..
I hope the English dub doesnt screw this by giving them voices that dont match
lol, whatever they get, it probably won't be rubbish like tokyopop...
Then you should throw away your hope for that. Didn't you hear Mio's voice? It's proof America sucks at voicing things.
I only knew they were screwing every show in Animax with their English voices
Mio's voice sounded fine to me. Maybe it's because I'm past the idea of all dubs sucking on principle.
"Dubs sucking on Principle."
Hot.
*edit* Unless both Dubs and Principle are guys.
"Unless both Dubs and Principle are guys."
But if both are girls then that makes it even hotter!
Isnt most voice dubbing in English done in CANADA...?

MANGAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Texas, actually.
It used to be In B.C. in Canada, they did Inuyasha, Esclaflowne and the Dragonball/Z/GT animes or at least the orignal dubs.
