Valkyria Chronicles 2, already derided by fans for abandoning the PS3 in favour of a cheap PSP sequel, has attracted even more opprobrium for completely abandoning the storyline of the previous game/anime, with the new game blithely resurrecting no less than four characters who died in the previous story.

Naturally this disclosure imparts spoilers:

Zombies?

Whilst including bonus characters from other franchises might be quite normal, including much loved characters who died in the course of the main storyline in a game ostensibly set in the same universe, and after the events of the original, is a severe stretch at the very least, and sacrilege at worst.

It seems Sega could scarcely have done more to alienate fans of the original series, whom it has already openly scorned as being surplus to its demographic requirements; with Sega having already said any commercial failure will likely scotch any proper sequels, it seems the franchise will be over despite scarcely having begun.

Is this a part of the main campaign though, or characters that can be used in multiplayer/skirmish mode?

I agree if they've been brought back for the actual PLOT then that is rubbish, but if it's just in additional modes then that's something a bit different.

Geass did it. Gundam 00 did it.

Why should it be such a fuss when Valkyrie does it too? :D

I dunno about those two, I've not seen them, but I don't think you could get away with it in the Valkyria Chronicles universe :). The rules of the world they set themselves in VC1 just don't allow for it.

The asspulls are as old as Christianity. Think back to Jesus Christ...
A man nailed to the cross with a stabbed wound, left for several days to die if not from intense pain, bleeding or heat then from thirst for sure, is buried and a heavy stone is put over the grave.

Job's done, Romans go get some beer. And then on Sunday - zombies.

Well, dumb otaku bought the same Haruhi episode eight times, so they expect there are enough dumb otaku who will buy that game with dead charas.

    They are probably right, too.

Haruhi S2 showed everyone that even bullshit sells, so why try to improve? Sad, really...

Gundam 00 did not. The Lockon that appeared in the second season was NOT the original. Did you not see the series?

These are unlockable secret squad members. They are playable in main missions, but do not take part in actual plot of the game. think of them as Skies of Arcadia cameos in the first game

Alicia Melchiott (Anime): requires the purchase of anime DVD
Ramal: Requires the purchase of anime DVD
    Alicia Gunther: Pre-order bonus
    Welkin Gunther: Pre-order bonus
    Selvaria Bles: Pre-order bonus
two manga-original characters: the passcode is in the last chapter of the manga (forgot which manga series it was)
Isara Gunther: PSP-to-PS3 connection save file transfer (if you have the first game completed, connect your psp to ps3, and you will receive a passcode to unlock this character)
    Faldio: same as Isara
    Maximillian: same as Isara

Alicia and Welkin do come out as cameoes in the main plot as well, as an older version (and Alicia is extremely sexier) of the two which fits the timeline. Welkin i think had no connection to the academy or was a teacher, and Alicia is the owner of the school bakery.

Wait wait wait... i'm not very up to date with this game, so can someone tell me where this happens within the storyline of the first one, if related at all? Because if it is after first one, a lot of things are out of line...

As far as I'm aware it is supposed to be a sequel to the first one. Which would make sense given a screen shot with Welkin and Alicia together I saw on Kotaku a while ago.

But I think these characters are probably unlockables in a skirmish mode, or something like that. Even if they DID want to bring back dead characters and reboot the franchise to some degree, why would Maxamillian and Selvaria be wearing Gallia uniforms (which they are not in their portraits in the top right of the screen).

Exactly. It's a whole lot of jumping to conclusions based on a few screenshots, when there's no reason to believe these characters are plot relevant at all.

well the article titles on sankaku all try to illicit controversy so people will be interested

bending the truth, or at least putting it in a certain view with the right vocabulary is used quite commonly here

When I saw the criticism of these characters being trotted out as random character service, I thought it was a relevant and valid point.

Even more so considering Sega has dumped the original platform, setting, character designs, etc...

Taken by itself it would indeed be an overstatement to say they are tossing the original, but in the context of their other actions things are rather different.

Uh... Isn't the character designer for BOTH the original and the seemingly bad sequel the same? Raita Honjou?

If so, then there is no change in character design... Well, except for putting two "prettyboys" in the spotlight.

The 3 main characters in this sequel sound like idiots, conette is typical moeblob and the other 2 guys sound like they have mental problems.

Sega seem hell bent on ruining this franchise

The edy attachment are also back, aswell as alicia and welkin.

Basically story is the least of their priorities, fan service is all they care about.

If it's a joke I get it. But Faldio is a tank commander in VC1. On foot he would probably be a scout like Welkin having not recieved speciality weapons training. Why is Selvaria a scout? She should be some speciality class. Even as a human she was fast, strong and carrying a huge gun. Also is Isara a new engineer class from VC2? She has a shield and hammer looking device. If that is the new engineer class i'm intrigued. Finally, I could see Maximillian as a Lancer considering how he fought you on foot in VC1.
