Hideo Kojima: “After Seeing MW2, I’ll Return to the PS3”

peace-walker-big-boss.jpg

Hideo Kojima, creator of the Metal Gear Solid series of stealth interspersed cutscenes, has stated that such is his admiration for Modern Warfare 2, he feels motivated to make a return to the PS3 for his subsequent games.

He commented to the official PlayStation rag that:

“After seeing Modern Warfare 2, I feel like I want to use all the modern specs!”

Doubtless he is champing at the bit to make even more extravagant cutscenes.

Regarding his then unexpected decision to release Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker on the PSP, he has given a variety of rationales to various sources:

“I wanted some young people to play MGS too. In Japan especially, the most popular hardware with this audience was the PSP.”

“With portable gaming you can play anywhere, and get right into the game at any time, play against your friends or with them in coop. In trains, cars and cafes, you can enjoy it on the move.

Also, with music, video, phones and photos all available in portable format, surely it’s inconvenient not to have it as a portable.”

“Nowadays you can play games anywhere; I wanted to realise a Metal Gear game which was portable too.”

“With the PS3 there are a lot of parents who won’t let their children have one, so there are lots of middle and high-schoolers who can’t play at home. Even with a game like this which is anti-war and anti-nuclear, kids will just be told ‘It’s a game with guns where you shoot people, isn’t it?’ and that will be the end of it.

I wanted to take into account players in this kind of environment by choosing the PSP.”

Presumably he told publishing executives something rather more convincing than that he was aiming to slip an anti-war military shooter past parental censors with a portable release; a shorter development cycle and lower costs for a portable title, with consequently lower risk, must have had nothing to do with it?

After seeing how much $ can you rip off for 5h gameplay you mean? Blah, blah marketing BS.

Some game publishers recently explained gameplay time pricing in relation to paying for watching cinema movies lasting 2h in average, but according to this logic a good book should be priced at $1000 LOL.

mgs4 was worst then cod4-2. i played lots of mgo but mgs4 campaign is like 90% movie with 2hour game play.

I'm sorry, did you say 2 hours? I've played through MGS4 7 times and have unlocked everything, and on my multiple playthroughs i've always skipped the cutscenes. Even through skipping, the game is a pretty lengthy one for it's genre. Definitely longer than MW2, which BTW was boring shit on a $60 disc.

Modern Warfare sucked and its sequel sucks as well. Nothing like MGS, only shooting.
Plus the weapon system fails (semi-auto only FN-FAL? Can't use the ammo from an AK47 w/ACOG with a grenadier AK47? Hundred-years-old shotguns? Shitty system is shitty).

i agree about modern warfare short campain mode being short, but i think infinity wards real focus was the robust online play. i love its online play, the speed, no lag, game modes, realistic damage. i think hideo got his inspiration from the online play and realistic battle scenes. i believe thats where the words specs come from. updating mgs graphics engine, online play, the overall game.

How many of you guys actually played MGS?

Every veteran player knows that MGS can be cleared in less than three hours after the first playthrough in normal.

Fact, most western games are like that. And MGS, though Japanese in origin, is highly influenced by western games. If you want every dollar to worth an hour, then I'd suggest you go play Japanese RPGs or galges.

More like he liked the storyline with the Weapons if you played that game you would be surprised.

Sure Modern Warfare 2 wasn't the best game but it was fun in Multi-player sometimes depending on how you play it.

    "semi-auto only FN-FAL"

A very large portion of light barrel FALs, the gun portrayed in COD, were semi-auto only. The FAL, like the M-14 or pretty much any non-LMG firing 7.62X51mm, is almost uncontrollable on full auto.

Id say that I am a MW fan and MGS fan. MGS4 brouhgt brought a fantastic arsenal, beautful graphics, and addictive play. But so did MW. While MW was alot shorter the multiplayer made up for it, while we all know the MGS4 online was well....lacking.

I think Hideo liked the ideas that came with MW and that inspired him to make a new MGS game. I mean what if Hideo made a new MGS co-op like Peacewalker, but with the specs and abilities of the PS3. Maybe one guy play as Snake and the other as Raiden, something to that affect.

We can name all the issues in both games as players OR we can look at the game from a writer/designer/director position and what one game can do for the other.

I challenge you to finish MGS4 in 2 hours (not counting the cutscenes). MGS4 isn't short, it just that the cutscenes were too much and too long. Most people would want to trade the time wasted on the cutscenes with more gameplay.
MW2 strength isn't in the single player (it isn't bad by any means, but it just to god damn short... not worth the $ for just the single player campaign) but on the multiplayer.

If I were to choose between MGS4 and MW2, I would definitely choose MGS4 just because I like single player games more than multiplayer (especially over internet, the internet connection quality in my country isn't that good). I would definitely rent MW2 though.

People have done Big Boss Extreme runs (hardest difficulty and hardest rank to get) in MGS4 as short as 2 hours 34 minutes. I wouldn't be surprised if someone had managed to do shorter since that record listing hasn't been updated in about a year and a half.

You've seen people or you've seen a youtube of a person beating MGS4 in such a time?

You have to consider that people who do speed runs of a game and are actually recognized for it beat those games in ridiculous times. That 2 hours and 34 mins is ridiculously fast. But that's not the expected time of beating the game. Hideo Kojima didn't design the game for you to cut corners.

I myself like to enjoy the game and every aspect of it. It's a sneaking game, not a race.

All in all, I suppose I'll call troll, and just stroll on.

MGS4 was vastly cinematic, but the online play made up for it.
As for his new games, I'm not too excited about 2 prequels. MGS5 will probably start off with Raiden getting into bar fights and leaving Rosemary. And Peace Walker.....I'm getting tired of big boss. Seriously, fight him in 2 games, play him in another, now play him again slightly after MGS3.
