Look up Taslima Nasreen. Over a hundred thousand Muslims gathered to violently protest the female activist. Her "insults", if you can even call it that, to Islam isn't out of spite stemming from misconception about the religion but through her criticism that Islam is incredibly misogynistic, which it is. Those umbrella organization for moderate Muslims should do more than just condemned after the fact. A proactive solution should be made and enacted by them too.

I would say that the religion IS the problem. Sure, people who are fanatic might and probably would try to justify their actions in some other way. However, when you have this "religion of peace" which justifies (and I don't give a shit what any moderate Muslim says, I'm pretty sure they're able to justify it with their religion), it makes all so much easier and helps when there there are all these other people believing in it. Maybe these moderates don't really believe that all that is right but they do kind of give them space to exist. I don't see those moderate Muslims going around protesting against the fundamentalists as those fundie fucktards do against the cartoonist.

Soap and silk may be bad examples, but they did preserve much of the knowledge of ancient greece and rome while germanic barbarians burned down cloisters and libraries in most parts of europe. Mathematics, astronomy, steel making...
