Shanghai Bridge Made of Rubbish Collapses

Citizens of Shanghai are aghast at the collapse of a major new bridge, pictured, which was revealed to be constructed partially out of rubbish instead of concrete.
The bridge, spanning the Wusong River in central Shanghai, was completed in 2009 and replaced a century old bridge with a more modern design.
However, after only a short period in operation the bridge began to collapse, with investigators finding such sturdy construction materials as bags of rubbish, Styrofoam, scrap wood and waste plastic used in the structure in place of reinforced concrete.
Sadly, such cases of outrageous workmanship are all too common in China, which may find many of its rapidly rising skylines are none too sturdily constructed…

this is more worse than ghost government project in the Philippines
So symbolic of China.
I'd never heared that in China.
The goverment don't want us to know that~~~I think~
This probably comes too late to all but a few readers, but this refers to only decorative lamp posts on the sides of the ends of bridge that was filled with rubbish.
The typical media exaggerations have made it seem like the whole bridge was made of rubbish and collapsing but that is not the case.
In China, where even embezzlement can merit the death penalty, there's no way anyone would risk their lives (literally) just so a few crooked construction executives can make a little bit more money.
On the other hand, if the project in question was just a block used to hold up a lamp, it's much more plausible that this would be allowed to pass.
Again, this isn't about morality or ethics, these officials would literally be taken behind the woodshed and SHOT, and all their family's possessions taken away and their children sent to labor camps if an entire bridge was found built like this and people died. The rich ones up top could buy their way out, but the middle management wouldn't and they would much rather report it early and watch their greedy asshole boss get in trouble than risk everything in building an actual bridge with rubbish.
This is contrast with the hi-speed train crashes where poor worksmanship in the building process is much more easy to conceal given the unfamiliar nature of the construction, but there's no way you can hide the fact if something vital were constructed from mere trash, even from the most uneducated of construction workers on site. They knew it was rubbish, but since it was only for decorations, they just laughed it off.
Here is the Chinese wikipedia article which contains the name of the bridge so you can look into it yourselves if you wish: http://zh.wikipedia.org/zh/%E6%B2%B3%E5%8D%97%E8%B7%AF%E6%A1%A5 [http://zh.wikipedia.org/zh/河南路桥]
which Chinese Government are you working for and how much money do you get from defending your country online, can I sign up too?
All these disgraces and the Chinese government wants to go on a world propaganda campaign to promote "Made in China"?
Strip away the shiny surface of the new China and what do you have? Rubbish safety standards. Rubbish democracy. Rubbish human rights. Rubbish freedom of expression. Rubbish internet freedom. Rubbish repression at every turn. China needs reform so badly. The West won't help, of course. Western nations are busy modeling themselves on the new China. This bridge scandal is new China in a nutshell.
I just hope whoever responsible for this will be find and shot.
Wow,I didn't even know this until just now.
It seems that Pretty much everyone on this site is so concerned about how MISERABLE and RIDICULOUS China and the Chinese are. So,thanks for your "CARING" for China, guys.
And, right,I'm Chinese
I have a feeling China will become a chemical waste within 20 years
China QUALITY!
I'm shocked this is bad even by China standards.
Talk about being full of it!
I say aluminium does a much better job at absorbing impact and vibration compared to trash, and it does not snap that easily too!
@Anon 03:26:
Re China's Big Bridge 'O Trash: my immediate reaction is, find out who took the bribes, who gave the bribes, who ordered/directed the bribes be given [go as far up the ladder as you can trace it], and have them shot for
"Major, willful, reckless endangerment of the public", or however you want to word it.
But, it occurs to me that some of those bribe-takers may have had themselves and/or their families threatened by the Chinese Mafia (whatever it's called), or, both threatened AND paid-off. It wouldn't be fair or just to penalize them when their selves/families were credibly threatened -- especially since the police likely were/are in the Mafia's pocket.
Re the U.S. incident you mentioned: the same thing applies. Given that the cement was tainted by the supplier, who was supposed to independantly check the material quality on behalf of the construction company/companies? If the so-called cement was bad (under-spec), why did they sign off on it?
There's a certain "critical mass" of corruption which makes it virtually impossible to wipe out -- if nearly everyone is "in" on the (corrupt) deal, everybody covers for each other when the government tries to investigate.
Once you've hit the critical mass, about all you can do is take a (virtual) flamethrower to the lot of them, and declare, "You can never get a government job or consult, nor bid on a government contract. No company you work for can consult for the government, or bid on a government contract."
Mmmhmmm.... and, I also want a pony.
>Given that the cement was tainted by the supplier, who was supposed to independantly check the material quality on behalf of the construction company/companies?
The engineers that are supposed to oversee the bridge construction and that it meets the spec. There is no reason why they couldn't run an independent lab test of a sample of materials.
There is a Professional Engineer somewhere that signs off everything safety involved. That's part of the legal process.
chinese fucks
check your recently bought items made from china...it may have trash or some kinda shit in it...oh wait it already does have some...ohh melamine!
Would that also include the computer you're typing from?
The Chinese just looked at what happened with the Minneapolis bridge collapse and thought to themselves, "garbage must make a more reliable building material then steel or concrete".
God damn it. My comment, I was logged out for some odd reason.
wahahha those guys where just to busy jerking off to their hot hentai chicks and where to lazy to build it stronger.
Hiding their garbage and making fancy new modern construction projects, it's a win-win for the Chinese government that can't see further than a couple of years ahead.
Creative waste disposal. Why burn/bury it when you can make bridges out of it?
Standards of living, ladies and gentlemen...Standards of living...
Epic Fail!
Nicely put.
Classifying this as "design failure" is a huge understatement. This is...
...PURE EPIC FAIL OF UNPARAMOUNT MAGNITUDE.
Seems that in China, it's wise to carry a hammer wherever you go. You'll never know if the very floor you're standing on is made of the same stuff you dispose off your home.
CHINA CONSTRUCTION: Every engineer's worst nightmare.
Somewhat disappointed Artefact chose to kick-start the new year with such sad story....

OMG!! THEY HAVE EVERYTHING IN CHINA!!!! i really need to visit china with super safety precaution and food supply from outside. just so that i can see this inhumanly possible way of doing things xD.
china at its best.
they improvise too much that's why they fail often
Probably workers on the site stealing materials and selling them elsewhere.
It would not be the construction company as they would hope for repeat business.
LOL.. L O fucking L
oh china failing at every fucking turn
ha ha this is the official repair

*gasp* omg!!!them chinese are so fucking clever!!!!
China style FTW
Chinese experts say that there is no need to make a fuss of it, it doesn't matter at all..
The Chinese are fucked, they feel ecstasy!
They give a new meaning to "rubbish work".
In China, the rubbush kills you
ditto that
Such things put people in danger.
good thing it was caught in time.
and people din't notice it since the beginning? okay, they are PROS !!
did they hire blind consultants for the construction?
Wicked ...
Like always China is ahead off the others, just look at it's recycling programs...
No crap its bad enough for trash its all gonna be used to construct the China off tomorrow...
thats a good thing -D
Recycling and Reusing good for the planet =D
